Ephesians 4; James 1

How do we deal with conflict in a Christian way? We need to learn to listen well, and we need to learn to speak with grace in a way that builds up and edifies the other person. This may be unnatural to us, but God is calling us to something different. We are all depraved, and we are all in need of forgiveness. A lot of heartwork has to happen in order to be like Christ, which is why we need to rely on the Holy Spirit. In Christ, when we come into conflict with others, we will be enabled to work through the issue by communicating effectively, not merely attacking each other like enemies.

Colossians 3:12

When dealing with the topic of communication and conflict, we must first seek out the example of Christ, so that we may follow the pattern that He has laid out for us. When we "put on Christ," we will show true love for others; we do not have to be at odds with those around us, because God is not at odds with us! This kind of Christ-like love is the one defining attribute of His Church, which is to be one body. But there is more. Another way to combat conflict is to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness, for ungratefulness is often a big source of conflict. Thankfully, God's Word gives us guiding principles to be exercised in our family relationships as well – whether we are in the role of husband, wife, parents, or children – so that our homes will not be battlegrounds of conflict, either. All that we do should be done for God! If we want to do whatever we want in our families and our relationships, instead of what God wants; then we will most certainly have conflict. However, when conflict does occur, the Lord has given us a certain process for handling those conflicts and restoring peace among ourselves.

Colossians 3

A sad consequence of sin is the utter brokenness of relationships. Sin caused a chasm between God and humans. It has also caused constant problems in our earthly relationships. How can we have a right relationship with God? How can we mend broken relationships with others? How do we communicate with grace and kindness? How should people talk with each other? Colossians 3 gives us explicit commands to direct us in how we are to relate to God and each other.
