Luke 22:7-18

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday afternoon october 24th this where every weekday morning at nine o'clock and on the weekends when i get a spare second away from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 22 verses 7 through 18 luke 22 verses 7 through 18. why don't we go ahead and have some well i don't have any coffee with me drink too much of it i will go ahead and pray and get into god's word lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word father we pray that as we get into your word now that you would bless us with it that we would understand and believe in jesus name amen here we go luke chapter 22 beginning at verse 7. then came the day of unleavened bread when the passover must be killed and he sent peter and john saying go and prepare the passover for us that we may eat so they said to him where do you want us to prepare and he said to them behold when you have entered the city a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water follow him into the house which he enters then you shall say to the master of the house your teacher says to you where is the guest room where i may eat the passover with my disciples then he will show you a large furnished upper room there make ready so they went and found it just as he had said to them and they prepared the passover the passover sorry when the hour had come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him then he said to them with fervent desire i have desired to eat this passover with you before i suffer for i say to you i will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of god then he took the cup and gave thanks and said take this and divide it among yourselves for i say to you i will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of god comes well let's go ahead and ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section and c what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well the first part right jesus tells them go right go prepare the passover for us that we may go and eat right and they ask you well what do you want us to do what do you want us to prepare and do you remember when jesus was coming into the city he told them go find go to the well and find a cult tied and and there go get that cold nobody's ever ridden on it before when they ask you what what's like why you're taking it tell them that the lord has need of it it happened exactly as it was supposed to happen here the same thing happens right when you've entered a city a man carrying a pitcher of water follow him into the house which he enters and he says there you're going to find a large upper room is going to be furnished and furnished and there we're going to go what is this about once again jesus knows exactly what's going to happen jesus is preparing for his last days in the margin of my bible i would say jesus sends his disciples to prepare the fafsa the passover that's i i feel like that's kind of like weak sauce right let me know what would you do i feel like it should be a little bit stronger than that because it's it's not just jesus prepares but jesus knows and prepares i don't know how to put that into words let me know what you would do best first for this section i'm going to go ahead and underline verse 13. right they went and found it just as he had said to them and they prepared the passover i don't know why he wanted to say fast over passover right they they find it exactly like jesus said and they go and prepare the passover the next part is they actually celeb the new king james version here says the passover is celebrated right uh he doesn't right he sits down with his 12. they go to the upper room where jesus had told them they were going to go what does he tell them with fervent desire i have desired to eat this passover with you before i suffer for i say to you i will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of god again jesus knows exactly what's going to happen but notice here that jesus isn't avoiding the pain jesus isn't avoiding the suffering jesus isn't holding back withholding stopping short of but jesus knows that that pain is going to come jesus knows what suffering is ahead of him and he fervently desires to eat this last meal with them have you ever thought about that before of like people who are on death row and they get one final last meal jesus is on death row jesus knows that his days are numbered jesus knows that the execution is about to happen and he wants to eat it with his disciples he splits up splits up the the the bread and he he divides it among themselves he gives thanks to god for it i think in my bible i'm going to underline verse 15 and 16 as the best verse to summarize this and in the margin of my bible i would probably write jesus's last meal that's what i would say jesus's last meal this really isn't the end of the story once we get to verse 19 tomorrow there's going to be even more to the story after that but this is jesus's last meal what are we called to do in response to this section well i think we're called to believe that jesus the second person of the godhead knows everything that he is omniscient that we can have faith in jesus christ he knows everything that's going to happen before it happens i don't know about you but that is a god i want to have faith in not a god who is surprised by the future not a god who doesn't know what's going to happen but has ordained all things that come to pass and and what else i think our hearts can also be comforted and i think your heart can be comforted i think my heart can be comforted by knowing that jesus wasn't dreading this oh it was going to be hard and and we're going to see him wrestle in the garden but jesus goes as a willing sacrifice as a sleep as a sheep led to the slaughter silent jesus was determined to show his love every step of the way jesus knew what was going to happen and still did it out of his love for them and if you believe in jesus christ his love for you that's the savior who is both all-knowing and who is love that's one we can put our faith in let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the grace and the love of jesus christ that he would die for sinners like us father we pray that you would bless us the rest of this afternoon that you would prepare our hearts to worship you tomorrow that we would come to your house to see your people to sing your praises and to bask in your grace in jesus name amen well may the lord bless you today and
