Luke 22:1–6

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this friday morning october 23rd that's where every weekday morning at 9am and on the weekends before my kids wake up or i get a spare second you and i will get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well why don't we go ahead and pray have some coffee and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word we thank you that you are merciful and gracious that you have loved with an everlasting love we pray now that as we get into your word that you would teach us and that we might follow after you in jesus name amen let's have some coffee all right here we go luke chapter 22 just first six verses now the feast of unleavened bread drew near which is called passover and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him for they feared the people then satan entered judas surnamed iscariot who has numbered among the twelve so he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and the captains how he might betray him to them and they were glad and agreed to give him money so he promised and saw opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of the multitude well just a few short verses for us today we need to ask ourselves hey what is this about b what's the best verse in c what are we called to do in response to this what's the best first or what's this about well this is about what's going to happen right this is judas's betrayal this is judas agreeing to hand over jesus now we know a little bit about judas before don't we i mean judas is the one who was in charge of the money jesus judas was the treasurer of the of the group judas is the one who uh you know wasn't happy when mary poured out the costly oil upon jesus's head and and the priests are are upset by jesus i mean jesus has been really giving it to him in the last couple of uh i mean in the last two chapters by what authority is he teaching these things by what authority is he driving out the money changers by what authority is jesus saying that he's the son of man but what authority does he have writing in here on a cult jesus they're not happy with jesus right jesus is is turning everything upside down and so now the feast of unleavened bread drew near that's the passover and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him for they feared the people a little bit better context for this and other chapters is that they feared to do this in front of the people or they feared the crowd and so they needed to do it in quiet there's a reason why jesus has tried through the night there's a reason why jesus is tried essentially in a kangaroo court starting in the middle of the night and going through into the wee hours of the morning they feared the people why because the people thought jesus was a prophet i doubt all of them thought jesus was the one who he said he was but at least he was feeding their bellies at least he was making their sick well and and so people were indignant they would have become indignant towards the high priests and the and the scribes and so they they want to figure out how to do this in a way where they're not going to suffer as many consequences and so satan entered judas surnamed iscariot now it's important to say that because jesus had two of the 12 disciples named judas and it always says it in the gospels judas not iscariot or judas who is named iscariot and so this this is a disciple right this is this is this is one of jesus's chosen ones jesus probably washed judas's feet jesus shared the last supper with judas jesus jesus spent time with judas isn't it interesting isn't it interesting that jesus would allow the one he knew would betray him to come in and you might say well hold on hold on where does it say that jesus knew that would at the last supper that's what jesus said right jesus said the one who dips his bread into into the bowl with me as the one who will betray me jesus knew exactly who he was talking about jesus knew long before this that he was going to go to jerusalem that he was going to be betrayed that he was going to be handed over to the elders and to the high priest and that they would that they would hand him over then to the gentiles and he would be scourged and he would be mocked and he would be spat upon and beat and he would be killed jesus knows all of this is going to happen and so he goes and and judas does this right he he finds out that they're going to give him money you can't serve both god and man jesus would have heard this and judas is choosing to instead be filled with the things of this world i mean just remember what we had looked at yesterday it will come as a snare to those who dwell on the face of the earth lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing drunkenness and the cares of this life i mean judas didn't get it right judas is more worried about money than the kingdom of god that jesus had just been warning them about and here he betrays him for for money what's the best verse for this well i think that's a hard one let me know in your bible i i i'm going to hold off on on highlighting something here in my bible let me know what would you highlight as the best verse that gets on this i think i might i think i might lean towards verse four but someone might say five or six i don't know let me know in your bible what would you highlight or underline as the best verse to summarize this section well last calling what are we called to do in response to this well i think we can check our own hearts and we can ask ourselves do we love jesus more than the things of this world or we might say that just in a response of faith is do we see the love that jesus christ had for us it's put here in plain view it's put here in a stark story that jesus knows he's going to the cross and knowing all of this that's going to still happen jesus loves his people like you and like me so much that he would endure that cross that he might shed his blood for the unrighteous that the right just won might pay the penalty for sin for our unrighteousness what a beautiful you know judas is wrong what judas does is sinful allows satan to enter into him the question is are our eyes fixed on jesus or our eyes fixed on the world do we see the love of christ and cherish it in our hearts are we more concerned about money riches living the good life well let's go ahead and pray but father i thank you so much for your holy spirit who presses these words upon our hearts lord we pray that we would be dissatisfied with this world and that we would be satisfied with your glory father this world presses down upon us the cares of this life surround us father please let us fix our eyes upon jesus and not be about the things and the pleasures of this life in jesus name amen well i pray that god blesses you today and that you go about with an undivided heart for god's glory with peace bye see you tomorrow [Music] [Music] you
