Luke 22:24-30

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday morning october 26th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a chance to get away from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are still in luke chapter 22 luke 22 verses 24 through 30 just a few verses for us this morning why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we read your word that you would apply it to our hearts that you would teach us that we would follow after you in jesus name amen oh why don't we go ahead and read our passage this morning luke chapter 22 verses 24 through 30. like always before we read if this is something that's helpful to you feel free to hit the like button that really helps with the youtube and facebook algorithms let's go ahead and jump in now there was also a dispute among them as to which of them should be considered the greatest and he said to them the kings of the gentiles exercise lordship over them and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors but not so among you on the contrary he who is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he who governs as he who serves for who is greater he who sits at the table or he who serves is it not he who sits at the table yet i am among you as the one who serves but you are those who have continued with me in my trials and i bestow upon you a kingdom just as my father bestowed one upon me that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on the thrones judging the twelve tribes of israel oh what an amazing passage we have we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do in response to these words so our abc's about best verse calling a what is this about what a great story i think i would put this in the margin of my bible jesus's kingdom is about servant leadership i don't know what do you disagree with that i i think what i see here is the world being turned on its head i think jesus is saying right they're arguing amongst themselves which one of us is going to be greatest which one of us is better than the other they're having a kind of puff up your chest and be prideful type conversation and jesus is like dude you guys don't even know what's going on here hold on you want to know how the unbelievers act you want to know how the pagans behave you want to know what gentiles are like they get authority over someone and they lord it over them they're the benefactor over them and yet what does jesus say he who is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he who governs be as the servant right he who serves for who is greater he who sits at the table or he who serves and then jesus points to himself is it not he who said to the table yet i am among you as he who serves you're going to see in our next book jesus says that he did not come to be served but to serve the king of the universe humbled himself into the likeness of man though he was equal with god he emptied himself that he might come and he might serve his people that he might come and he might show what servant leadership what godly love looks like not lording it over but loving this this turns the world on its head right have you ever worked for a manager who you know they they're they're full of themselves and full of their own authority it's a pain to work for them that's not what the kingdom of god is like i remember when i was in the military and somebody would make rank and in the navy you would get uh your your rank was on your callers on your on a certain type of uniform and and we used to say you know the crows got to their head right meaning they got advanced all of a sudden and they got a new rank and and all of a sudden they're strutting about in their authority and their new power and and everybody disrespected them for it nobody liked them because of it but the leaders who really made an impact were those who loved and cared and served the people who served who worked under them see jesus christ as our commander-in-chief as our great high priest as our king incarnate as our messiah as our lord and master did not come to be served but to serve and what does he say after that and i bestow upon you a kingdom just as my father bestowed one upon me and i bestow and and that sorry that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of israel jesus is giving them that authority jesus is giving them entrance into his kingdom it's not about which of them is the greatest it's jesus's kingdom it's jesus's fame it's jesus's glory it's jesus who was going to earn that kingdom it was jesus who was going to purchase that kingdom at the price of his very own blood they're sitting there at the last meal and jesus is sitting there saying it's about me my kingdom look at me serve like me i'm the model for you i'm the one who loves you sorry what's the best verse in this well i think i'm going to underline verse 27. you might even argue that you would just underline the second half of verse 27 you know when it says yet i am among you as one as the one who serves well what are we called to do in response to this do we serve the book of james tells us that that true religion is this caring for the orphan and the widow in their distress do we love the fatherless do we care for the poor are we are we seeking to serve our own desires are we looking out at others and are we considering others better than ourselves do we look to jesus christ and out of a heart that has been changed out of a love for jesus christ do we love others right by this they will know that you are one of my disciples that you love one another do we serve one another do we care for one another do we love one another again we do not do these things because we want to be in his kingdom somehow earning a seat at his table but because he has brought us to his table do we then love others because of what has been done for us and the model that jesus has shown us do we display that to others around us do we pour out our lives for others let's go ahead and pray now father we thank you so much for your word we pray that you would teach us to pour out ourselves for others we pray that we would not seek to be served but that we would serve we pray that we would be known for loving your people and loving the stranger loving the orphan loving the widow loving the poor father we thank you that you have loved us who are poor wretches we thank you that you have loved us we pray that we would reciprocate that love now thank you for jesus christ it's in his name we pray amen well may god bless you today
