Scripture Passage
Christ is Beaten
Matt. 26:67, 68; Mark 14:65
63 Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him. 64 And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
The Sanhedrin Tries Christ
Matt. 27:1; Mark 15:1
66 As soon as it was day, the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us.”
But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”
70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”
So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.”
71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Lk 22:63–71.
A — About
What Is This Passage About?
Jesus is mocked, beaten, blasphemed, and tried exactly as he foretold. The council condemns him for affirming that he is the Son of God, bringing the central gospel question into view: whether Jesus truly is the Messiah and reigning Son he says he is.
B — Best Verse
Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?
Luke 22:70–71
then they all said are you the son of god he said to them you are right to say that i am and they said what further testimony do we need for we have heard it ourselves from his own mouth
Bryan explicitly underlines verses 70–71 because Jesus' own confession that he is God's Son is the heart of both the charge against him and the gospel hope.
C — Called or Christ
C — Called to Do
Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead. Trust him as Messiah, Son of God, reigning Judge, and the only Redeemer who saves from sin.
