Luke 23:1-7

hey hey oop is that live let's see um i'm here with my best friend let's see i don't know if it's going live or not it's kind of giving me the spinning wheel of death there we go okay now we're live hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions it is saturday night october 31st happy reformation day that's where every weekday morning at 9 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well we are a little bit late today we got in late last night from my grandfather's funeral and we're busy getting things done today so just hopping on here and so my best friend has decided actually i kind of made her but she olivia is going to join us for coffee and devotions today why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that you would teach us that we would hear your word that we would understand it and that you would bring glory to yourself as we understand it and you apply these things to our lives in jesus name amen all right luke chapter 23 just the first seven verses so luke 23 the first seven verses then the whole multitude of them arose and led him to pilate and they began to accuse him saying we found this fellow perverting the nation and forbidding to pay taxes to caesar saying that he himself is christ a king then pilate asked him saying are you the king of the jews he answered and said to him it is as you say so pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd i find no fault in this man but they were the more fierce saying he stirs up the people teaching throughout all judea beginning from galilee to this place when pilate heard of galilee he asked if the man were a galilean and as soon as he knew that he belonged to herod's jurisdiction he sent him to herod who was also in jerusalem at that time all right so like every morning we need to ask ourselves hey what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this passage and see what are we called to do in response to this so a what is this about well olivia if you had to in the margin of your bible just write a little one sentence summary what would you write for this small portion i mean i feel like there's a lot so yeah but but just summarize it right give me one sentence to get at the heart of it that jesus is king of the jews all right that jesus is the king of the jews good where do you get that from first thing verse three yeah so pilate asked him saying are you the king of the jews and he answered duh right yeah you're right of course it is as you say um isn't it interesting what notice in verse two there it says uh what are they saying we found this fellow to be perverting the nation and forbidding to pay taxes to caesar is that what jesus said what did he say he said pay to caesar let's do the season and to god what is that yeah right so even in their testimony they're bearing false witness against jesus trying to entrap them right any but i don't think he's necessarily falling for that because the next part is the one that makes him saying that he himself is christ the anointed one a king and that's when pilate says that so why do you think pilate says that he finds no fault in him in verse 4. does he believe he's a king probably why would he why would he send him away if he thought he was a king because he didn't want to take that guilt on him you think pilate cared about guilt yeah i don't know what do you think i'm not so sure right this is this is a live question this is the the text doesn't tell us here but why do you think that pilot would send him away right i find no fault in this man right but the people are really upset and and the people are so upset that they alright he's spreading this all throughout the kingdom right all the way from the north all the way down here to jerusalem and he finds out he's from galilee and what does he do sends them away to who to harry why would he do that because he doesn't want to deal with him exactly right yeah pilate knows he's innocent right pilate knows these things and it's like i mean what does he do at the end of the story i mean we've read the story before but what does he do at the end of the story the last thing he says about jesus let this blood knock down my hands yeah right he washes his hands right he's he's he's innocent but just to make appease you all right he doesn't want to deal with him he sends them up to herod we'll read more about that tomorrow so yeah jesus is the king of the jews but herod doesn't believe it herod doesn't care about it and in the other gospels we find out more information about how this goes but what would you underline in here is the best verse probably three yeah very good yeah yeah so uh jesus is the king of the jews good uh well this is a hard part calling what are we called to do or to believe in response to these words do you think it's that simple yes so what does that mean for your life that he has to be king of my life he's not just savior but he's king so you save your ancient what does that mean though it means that i have to obey him yeah right he lives like he wants me to work okay right so we we obey him because he's like can we obey him because he's our anointed one right do we obey him do we follow after his feet do we know the law of christ and out of our love for christ but isn't it interesting here that jesus the king of the universe is being examined by a pagan like the humiliation of jesus that like he could call down the legion of angels and yet he's letting herod and he's letting pilate play these silly games going through the whole legal structure i think this is amazing right how much jesus loves us that even in his trials jesus is showing his humility and so we know that he is the king and that we have to follow him as the king he is the rightful heir of the throne and even now he sits at the right hand of god the father almighty do we follow after him out of a heart for him do we serve our humble king let's go ahead and pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the blessing it is to get to study your word we thank you for sending our king into the world we thank you that you have laid upon him the iniquity of us all and that you have shown us such grace and by grace alone through faith in jesus christ alone we might also enter into christ's kingdom in jesus name amen
