41 And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

[Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this wednesday morning october 28th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well i'm going to shoot it straight with you this morning i am actually in southern california not here at the church the next few days are pre-records because i'm going to be delivering the gospel message at my grandfather's funeral so please pray for me and my family this afternoon as my grandfather's viewing and tomorrow will be his funeral please pray specifically for those who are christians that they would have comfort and for our non-christian family that they might hear the gospel message and believe why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us as we read your word that you would bury it deep down in our hearts that we might have faith that we would believe the things that you would have for us in jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 22 we'll be reading verses 4 39-46 luke 22 39-46 coming out he went to the mount of olives and as he was accustomed and his disciples also followed him when he came to the place he said to them pray that you may not enter into temptation and he was and he was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw and he knelt down and prayed saying father if it is your will take this cup away from me nevertheless not my will but yours be done then an angel appeared to him from heaven strengthening him and being in agony he prayed more earnestly then his sweat becoming like great drops of blood falling down to the ground then he rose up from prayer and he came to his disciples he found them sleeping from sorrow then he said to them why do you sleep rise and pray lest you enter into temptation well just a few things here first of all let's get rid of these these study notes let's put this over and let's jump into our text before us this morning so we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words what is this about jesus is praying i think in the margin of my bible i would write something like jesus cries out in his humanity or jesus sweats drops of blood as he prays in agony i don't know exactly how to capture this in words jesus knows what is coming jesus was a full human being fully god fully man but fully in a wholeness a human being facing death he knew the cross was coming the existential reality that that jesus was going to be tortured that he was going to be mocked that he was going to be spat upon that he was going to be rejected that he was going to be numbered amongst the transgressions the perfect righteous one was going to take on the sin of those who are unrighteous the faithful one would show his ultimate love for the unfaithful for the unrighteous it is jesus is in agony here jesus is crying out to his father in the in the in the darkest and loneliest hours of his night of his entire life jesus cries out to his heavenly father when he came to that place he said pray that you may not enter into temptation and he was withdraw withdrawn from them by about a stone's throw away i don't know about you but sometimes i love biblical measurements about a stone's throw away i guess it depends on how strong you are can and you can throw but we see that jesus is crying out to his heavenly father he's willing to obey he's willing to go there but he's not will but he we we can't so over spiritualize the the affliction of jesus christ that we miss the human agony here what's the best verse for this well i'm going to underline in my bible verse 42. that's what i'm going to underline in my bible what am i called to do or what are you called to believe in response to this passage how do you think about the cross how do you think about what jesus did do you think it was an easy thing or do you think of jesus christ in these ways do you look at a passage like this and do you and do you recognize the cost of your salvation do you realize that jesus was led like a lamb to the slaughter that jesus was physically beat that jesus was emotionally abandoned that jesus who never did anything wrong was killed and he knew it was going to happen and he willingly chose to go forward and to do it what a great love that jesus christ has for his children that even though it would cost him everything even though it would be the hardest thing imaginable the righteous one died for the unrighteous do you believe it do you see the costly blood by which you re redeemed a redemption that was more valuable than golder or silver but a redemption by the very blood of jesus christ let's pray father we thank you so much for jesus christ our only savior our only hope we pray lord that you would bury this hope in our hearts that we would not think low of the sacrifice and of the
