Luke 22:31–38

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning october 27th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 22 verses 31-38 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us now as we get into your word that you would apply it to our hearts that we might believe the things you would have for us and we would live them out in our lives in jesus name amen well here we go luke chapter 22 beginning at verse 31 and the lord said simon simon indeed satan has asked for you that he may assift you as wheat but i have prayed for you that your faith should not fail and when you have returned to me strengthen your brethren but he said to him lord i'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death. then he said i tell you peter the rooster shall not crow this day before you deny me three times that you do not know me he said to them when i sent you without moneybag knapsack and sandals did you lack anything so they said nothing then he said to them but now he who has a money bag let him take it and likewise a knapsack and he who has no sword let him sell his garment and buy one for i say to you that this which is written must still be accomplished in me and he was numbered amongst the transgressors for the thing concerning me have an end so he said lord look here are two swords and he said to them it is enough well we have to ask ourselves hey what is this about b what's the best first to summarize these sections and see what are we called to do in response to these passages so a what is this about well we first need to ask ourselves verses 31 through 34. this is a pretty remarkable passage isn't it jesus has just told them about who is the greatest and who is the least and what his kingdom is like and the teaching of the kingdom continues here when he speaks specifically to peter peter's hebrew name simon simon simon indeed satan has asked for you that he may sift you as wheat but i have prayed for you jesus knows again what is going to happen here jesus is fully aware of what the cross entails and what him being numbered amongst the transgressors meant that peter doesn't get this he writes that's right whoa hold on i'm with you now i'm willing to go to prison even to death for you and jesus says no you're not no you're not before the rooster crows two times you'll deny me three times see jesus said that your faith should not fail and when you have return to me strengthen your brethren jesus knew jesus knew that at that final hour all of his disciples would flee when jesus is arrested it'd be him it would be him alone it'd be him without his disciples so a what is this about i think in the margin of my bible i would write something like jesus tells peter of his care for him even though peter will fail that's kind of a long sentence and i get it but you know jesus jesus is trying to tell him i know what's coming you're going to betray me but when you do you won't be stripped away from me but when you return strengthen your brethren isn't that amazing i'm it's just going to jump straight into calling here real quick isn't that amazing that even those who might go away from christ for a time jesus knows that some will come back it's amazing how often in the new testament we're taught we're told about those who must be put out the church not because we hate them or something but that they might be brought back in that we might regain our brother or our sister what's the best first to summarize this section well i think i'm going to underline in my bible verse 32 and then this next section christ predicts coming conflict well yeah i would say things are about to change that's what i would probably put in the margin of my bible things are about to change from the most part of this they people haven't been successful at stopping jesus nothing could stop jesus from going to the cross people would oppose jesus and jesus would walk right past them and jesus would send out his disciples that people might not receive them but they were okay it wasn't going to be the case much longer and jesus is telling them things are about to change i think in the margin or in my bible i think i'm going to underline verse 37. and particularly careful to look at that middle part of verse 37 and he was numbered with the transgressors this is straight from isaiah's chapter 53 on the suffering servant that he was numbered amongst the transgressors that jesus christ the messiah was promised from long ago and that there would be an end to his life that the kingdom of god might be ushered in so you see calling what are we called to do well if they hated jesus they're going to hate us also be ready if you're sharing from your heart the love of jesus christ not everybody's going to accept it and that's okay for those of us who see people whom we love walk away from the gospel keep praying for them keep praying for them keep praying for them we don't know who for definite sure or the elect of god but we do know that if they are of the son that no one can snatch them out of his hand jesus will not lose any of his sheep and so keep praying keep praying keep praying you know the the great patristic father augustine his mother monica prayed for him even as he was walking far astray in his carnality and lust and eventually god brought him back back i remember my mother saying that she was on her knees pleading with god that he would break me that i might come back to him thank the lord for praying mothers are you a praying father you're praying brother are you a praying sister are you a praying church member who's pleading with god that he might bring back those who have walked away let's go ahead and pray this morning father we thank you for your word and we thank you for the plan which you have in jesus christ the plan which you had in your compact of redemption from eternity ago and have brought to fruition that our king was numbered amongst the transgressors that the righteous one paid the death for the righteous for the unrighteous father we pray for those whom we love who were once under the grace of jesus christ and professed to believe in him but have denied him now lord we pray that you would bring them back we pray father they might be not be those who would be apostate who would have tasted the gift and never want to return please father we pray that you would place it heavy on our hearts we would plead with you our loved ones our brothers and sisters who have turned from you that they might come back even though they might be prodigals that you would throw your arms around them in love in jesus name amen well may god bless you today and may he fill your heart with joy and peace bye [Music] [Music] you
