Scripture Passage

Warning to Watch for His Coming

Matt. 24:36–44; Mark 13:32–37

34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 And in the daytime He was teaching in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed on the mountain called Olivet. 38 Then early in the morning all the people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.

The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Lk 21:34–38.

A — About

What Is This Passage About?

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this see it's thursday morning october 22nd that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a break from my kids you and i we get together we have a cup of coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we continue our look at luke chapter 21 and today we just have a few verses 34 through 38. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word and we thank you for what a blessing it is to come and hear your word to sit at your feet to learn from you father we pray that we would understand your word this morning in jesus name amen well real quick if this video is helpful to you feel free to hit the like button before we get reading and also we're going to continue as we look at some difficult passages and after the end of this video i'm going to put a link in the description that or in the comments it's going to send you off to a website by tim challies if you didn't get a chance to look at that yesterday i'd encourage you to do so it's a very helpful infographic let's go ahead and jump into the text this morning luke chapter 21 beginning at verse 34. but take heed of yourselves lest your hearts be weighted down with carousing drunkenness and cares of this life and that day come on you unexpectedly for it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass and to stand before the son of man and in the daytime he was teaching in the temple but at night he went out and stayed on the mountain called olivet then early in the morning all the people came to him in the temple to hear him well we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well i'm going to underline the first the first verse there uh maybe even a lie the first couple verses right i think this is the heart of the passage what is this what is this passage talking about if i was to put it in a one sentence little summary actually hold on let me stop how would you put this in one sentence summary what would you write in the margin of your bible what is jesus getting out here well i think we need to be alert i'm just going to merge a and c together jesus is commanding the people and us to be watchful to be ready right to take heed of our lives to make sure that we're not those who are carousing drunk and and being consumed with the days of this life right there there's all sorts of things in this life that are going to demand your attention the pleasures of this world that are going to are going to seem like they are the most important things and jesus is saying hold on here take heed of your life be careful you don't know when the son of man is going to return again you don't know when you're going to stand before the son of man so when when the master comes back are you going to be found drunk are you going to be found cruising about with with other people are you going to be found chasing after the desires and the cares of this life rather than the kingdom of god and god's righteousness let me ask you it's thursday monday tuesday wednesday you probably went to church on sunday or if you couldn't come to actual church you probably attended online somewhere let me ask you how much of your life is taken up with the cares of this life versus god's kingdom how much of your time if you had to break your days down by increments and assign different values you know was i seek was my heart in the right place as i was doing this work i had to go i know i have a job i need to provide for my family but was i doing that for god's glory or was i doing it for my pleasure if we had to evaluate our time like that if we lived every day in the presence of knowing that god himself is going to return in any moment how would that shape the way we live how would that change i think we have to ask ourselves are we are we those people who have been gifted are are we those people who god has given ten five one mena to and are we using that on our own desires on our own cares or are we investing it in the kingdom of god how are we spending our time with our children how are we spending our time at work how are we spending time with our relatives how are we investing our emotional energy i don't know exactly how this is going to hit home for you i'd love to i'd love to hear your thoughts let me know down in the comments or send me a personal message you know is this something that you struggle with i don't know about you but it's convicting to me i know when i think about this i have to realize man i spend a lot of time thinking about the cares of this world instead of thinking about god and his kingdom and his righteousness i think this is why jesus tells us that when we pray daily that we're going to say your kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven i think this is also why we have to ask god to forgive us of our sins why don't we go ahead and do that now father we thank you so much for your holy spirit that convicts us lord we pray that we would be busy about your kingdom work lord we are in this world but father we pray that you would not let us be of this world we pray that you would not let the seed which you have planted in our hearts and as growing up as a plant in our lives that wouldn't be choked out by the weeds of this world by the deceitfulness of wealth and the cares of this world father we pray that we would be seeking first your kingdom and your righteousness but father we do fail and so we pray that you would forgive us of our sins forgive us for how unwatchful we can be and we pray lord that you would spur us on this day more and more with a heart towards your kingdom in jesus name amen well i pray that you go forth today working with all your might to god's glory filled with the peace and grace of jesus christ and that it would overflow in your life and go into your family as well bye see you tomorrow [Music] you
