Luke 21:29-33

[Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this what is this wednesday morning wednesday morning october 21st that's where when every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends before my kids wake up or i get a spare second you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together well this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels and this morning we are at luke chapter 21 just a couple verses verses 29 through why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word lord we pray that you would care for us and bless us as we read your word we pray that we would take these things to heart that you would bury them in our minds that they would seep down deep into our souls and that you would change the way we think we speak and we live in jesus name amen all right let's go ahead and jump into it luke chapter 21 beginning at verse 29 here we go then he spoke to them a parable look at the fig tree and all the trees when they are already budding you see and know for yourself that summer is now near so you also when you see these things happening know that the kingdom of god is near assuredly i say to you this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place heaven and earth will pass away but my words will by no means pass away oh that's all we have for us right now tomorrow we'll get into some more but jesus is still talking about this eschatological end jesus is still talking about the stones that are going to be torn down jesus is still talking about things and so we need to ask ourselves what is this about a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well maybe yesterday you thought i don't know man this is this is kind of hard stuff to understand well you're right i even got a text message from someone saying i don't know all i know is that jesus is coming back and i thought you're humble and wise for saying that because we know as we looked yesterday that some of these things seem like they happened in in 70 a.d when the temple was torn down and that seems to line up with what jesus says here that i say to you this generation will by no means pass away to all things take place but i think jesus isn't just talking about the temple i think jesus is talking about his own body i think jesus was saying not that the physical temple necessarily though that would also be destroyed i think he's also saying that his own body would be destroyed that his body would be would perish and that there's this reality that in the new testament there's something that theologians call the already but not yet there are things that are true and have happened and are historically reliable and are here and now we can put our hands on it but yet the fullness of them were waiting to come the already but not yet we find all throughout the new testament that things have started but they're going to come to their fruition things have begun but we're waiting for their full promise and so here in this passage i think jesus is saying right we still need to be on guard oh yeah about all the things that he's telling us we do need to be able to pay attention we do need to be like the servant who is waiting eagerly for his master to return i'm going to get ahead of myself because that's tomorrow but what is this about well you see and know for yourselves that summer is near right we do need to be on guard we're not going to know the exact hour or the exact time but we know that we do live in the last days we do know that some of these things have happened but that they're full their fullness is yet to come and so somehow and and i'll leave it to more detailed theologians than myself but we know that somehow we can see wars and rumors of wars we can see pestilence and we know that just like 2 000 years ago our ancestors in the faith we know that someday he is going to return and so we eagerly anticipate that day we wait for that day we aren't fools we don't just think that he's never coming back but we know that that the time is ripe and at any moment jesus christ can return we know that someday his gospel will continue to go out that his word is going into all language groups that his his scriptures are being translated his gospel is going out that the nations are coming to jesus christ we know that there are jews who are believing in jesus christ we don't know when that full number is going to be fulfilled but we know that someday it will be and jesus will return again and so heaven and earth will pass away but by but my words will by no means pass away that's what i'm going to highlight in my bible here verse 33 now maybe you would disagree with me and that's okay would you highlight something else would you would you highlight about you know when summer is near what would you highlight in your bible i'm really interested in this i love hearing your guys's thoughts about these things well and i think we've already covered calling with all of this but maybe i'd encourage you maybe you haven't thought much about end times or maybe you haven't really worked out your theology maybe you're a you don't know if your pre-mill or your all mill or your post mill maybe you don't even know what a mill is maybe you're just a mill whatever's going to happen is going to happen maybe i'd encourage you to to pick up some good resources i'll tell you what when i'm done here i'm just going to go ahead and and put a quick article on the church's website and in the comments below here and so i'm going to try to put that there an article for describing what the different millennial views are and i'd encourage you to study this out i'd encourage you to think about it i encourage you to wonder about it but yet do so with a humble heart knowing for certain that all of these positions though i think some of them are or are better than others all of them believe in the physical real resurrection and that jesus christ is going to return again someday let's go ahead and pray lord we thank you so much for our lord jesus christ and we thank you for the promise that heaven and earth will pass away but that his word will never pass away we thank you for your promises we thank you for the hope that we have in jesus christ we thank you for your holy spirit we pray that you would give us humility with things that are shrouded in mystery but we pray that we would know the absolute clear things and that we would trust in those we pray that we would trust in jesus christ and be
