Luke 21:20-28

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning october 20th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare second from my kids you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 21 verses 20 through 28 luke chapter 21 verses 20 through 28. let's go ahead and pray and we'll get into god's word father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us with your word now that you would care for us and that we would believe the things which you tell us in jesus name amen well i'm trying out with a different microphone today seeing if that let's go ahead and get into the word luke chapter 21 beginning at verse 20. but when you see jerusalem surrounded by armies then know that its desolation is near then those who are in judea flee to the mountains let those who are in the midst of her depart and let not those who are in the country enter her for these are the days of vengeance that all things which are written may be fulfilled but woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days for there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people and they will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away captive into all nations and jerusalem will be trampled by gentiles until the times of the gentiles are fulfilled and there will be signs in the sun in the moon in the stars and on the earth distress of nations with perplexity the sea and the waves roaring men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth for the powers of the heavens will be shaken then they will see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory now when these things begin to happen look up and lift up your heads because your redemption draws near well what a great passage we have from jesus today telling us about what's going to happen in these last days so we need to first ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section and c what are we called to do in response to these words so first a what is this about well this is talking about the last days we remember what we had looked at just yesterday the signs of christ's coming and now today jesus is continuing on that right he says but when you see jerusalem surrounded by armies then know that its desolation is near somehow jesus is talking about jerusalem being surrounded by armies and he also talks about those who are going to flee into the mountains now there's a lot of different views on this and so we won't dive the depths of this you might pick up a book on something like four or five views of eschatology because passages like this are going to determine whether you're you know dispensationalist historical pre-mill all mill post mill etc and i think it's somewhat clear here that some of this happened in some sense in 70 a.d i don't think all of it has been accomplished i don't think all of it is in the past but certainly some of it is i think what's going on in verse 20 but when you see jerusalem sound surrounded by armies then know that desolation is near we know that this actually happened with the fall of jerusalem we know that the roman army surrounded it besieged jerusalem destroyed the city tore down the temple so we know that in some ways some of this is what's going on but there's things that aren't yet there right we see that jesus is going to come in the clouds verse 27 then they will see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory there are some people who take this as oh all of this has happened in the past but we know that that's not the case because the son of man has not come in all of his glory in the clouds we know that jesus is going to return again we know that jesus's gospel is going to go out and do all the nations we know that the fullness of the gentiles is going to be brought in and we also know that the fullness of those who are elect who believe of the jewish people will also be saved and so we know the second coming of jesus christ is going to come when is going to come i can't tell you that nobody can tell you that if anybody tells you that they know exactly when jesus christ is going to return plug up your ears and walk away because they obviously haven't read what jesus says here but in the same sense we need to be careful i think when we get to topics like eschatology we can go as far as the scriptures allow us but we have to have humility there are clear things that it teaches and other things that we're not privileged to other things that we just don't know the full extent of what is being said here but we do know that there's going to be tribulation we do know that there's going to be persecution we do know that there's going to be trials and there's going to be famines and there's going to be wars and there's going to be rumors of wars and men's hearts are going to fail so we know all these things happened are happening are going to happen but someday and this is where i'm going to underline in my bible i'm going to underline verse 27 then they will see the son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory now when these things begin to ha to happen look up and lift up your heads because your redemption draws near i can't wait let's just go ahead and jump in to see calling i can't wait for jesus christ to come back again i can't tell you when it's going to happen it might not happen in my lifetime oh i sure hope it does olivia was just telling me the other day how cool would it be if jesus came back and we didn't have to die how wonderful would that be i don't know when that's going to happen but i sure do look forward to it we need to be ready we need to be working in our father's vineyard because we don't know when he's going to return but are we ready for it are we looking forward to it do we cry out maranatha lord come quickly are we busy about our father's work spreading the good news of jesus christ and his glorious gospel do we love jesus christ and do we eagerly anticipate his return why don't we go ahead and pray this morning father we thank you so much for telling us in ways that we can't fully understand but ways which our hearts cling to that you are going to make all things right again and that you are going to return you did not leave us as orphans but you gave us your holy spirit and someday you are going to return in the clouds you are going to return in all your glory as the king of the universe and make all things right again we long for that day and we pray that we would be ready for it in jesus name amen i pray you go forth today with the confidence that jesus christ is reigning on his throne right now and will someday come back in all of his glory and i pray that in that light you would go in the grace peace and confidence of the lord bye [Music] so [Music] you
