Luke 20:9–26

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this thursday morning october 15th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i'm able to get a spare second from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well thanks for joining me this morning we are we are at luke chapter 20 verses 9 through 26 luke chapter 20 verses 9 through 26 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we thank you father for blessing us with your word and for teaching us from your word father we pray that we would receive it with faith and that you would show us what you have done in the past and how we are to live our lives now in jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 20 beginning at verse 9. then he began to tell the people this parable a certain man planted a vineyard leased it to vine dressers and went into a far country for a long time now at vintage time he sent a servant to the vine dressers that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard but the vine dressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed again he sent another servant and they beat him also treated him shamefully and sent him away empty-handed again he sent a third and they wounded him also and cast him out then the owner of the vineyard said what shall i do i will send my beloved son probably they will respect him when they see him but when the vine dresser saw him they reasoned among themselves saying this is the heir come let us kill him that the inheritance may be ours so they cast them out of the vineyard and killed them therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do to them he will come and destroy those vine dressers and give the vineyard to others when they heard it they said certainly not then he looked at them and said what then is this that is written the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone whoever falls on that stone will be broken but on whomever it falls it will grind him to powder and then the second story here and the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on him but they feared the people for they knew he had spoken this parable against them so they watched him and sent spies who pretended to be righteous that they might seize on his words in order to deliver him to the power and the authority of the governor then they asked him saying teacher we know that you say and teach rightly and you do not show personal favoritism but teach the way of god in truth is it lawful for us to pay taxes taxes to caesar or not but he perceived their craftiness and said to them why do you test me show me a denarius whose image and inscription does it have they answered and said caesars and he said to them render therefore to caesar's the things that are caesar's and to god the things that are god's but they could not catch him in his words in the presence of the people and they marveled at his answer and kept silent well two great stories for us today to look at the first is a what is this about b what do we take as the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words well in the margin of my bible for the first part i would say uh hmm how would i summarize this help me out here what would let me know down in the comments how would you summarize this section right so so it's talking about jesus ch being the chief cornerstone he's talking about the parables of the vine dresser and and that's what it's titled but what what's what's more than just the parable what is jesus actually teaching right it's okay to know the stories but how does it fit into the context and what is this teaching about remember jesus has just cleansed the temple jesus has just come in as the king god has sent his beloved one so what i think this is actually getting at is i think this is going along with what jesus was teaching before i think that jesus knows he's going to die and here he's telling them that they are going to reject the beloved one of the king and they're going to be judged for it the kingdom is going to be taken away from them and given to others i think that that's what this is getting at i don't know how to summarize that in one sentence help me out what would you what would you say there it's interesting that jesus is telling these things to them jesus is telling them here's a story this is what it's like and i'm not sure you understand it i'm going to make it in colorful language so that even a child could understand what the story is talking about especially we can with hindsight know that jesus is talking about himself that god has sent the prophets that god has sent the prophets that god has sent the prophets they rejected the prophets it killed the prophets they they did not want to hear from the owner of the vineyard and finally the vineyard sends his son and they do not just reject this great prophet the final prophet but they kill him right and jesus is saying that's what you're going to do i think that's the heart of what's getting on here but but jesus is telling them right this is exactly what was promised and prophesied in the book of psalms when he said the stones which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone that jesus is the chief cornerstone jesus is the foundation of the church jesus is the one by whom we are all being lined up with it is jesus who is the stumbling block for those who do not believe and the model and the and the cornerstone the foundation for us who do believe i think that's what that's getting at in my bible i think i'm going to underline a couple parts i'm going to underline verse 15 and 16. or sorry 14 and 15 and verse 17. i think that that's what's going on here and i think the next story lines up with it as well right what's the next story jesus has just told them that they're going that the vine dressers are going to try to kill the sun and here that's exactly what they're trying to do isn't it look look at verses 19 through 26 what are they trying to do they're trying to get jesus on charges of insurrection they're trying to trap jesus making him making him say something that they could capture him in his words they're trying to get him to look like a rebel so the romans might kill him and they set up this trap for him right they know the herodians are in cahoots with the romans right the the the romans are the ones who made herod king and now his sons are ruling the divided kingdom and they the people who are loyal to that they're thinking we got him right we know jewish people hate paying their taxes to the romans and so should we pay taxes to caesar or not and jesus amazes them right he's not going to be trapped on their words jesus is not going to go to the cross on anybody else's timeline or plan or prerogative jesus is going to go of his own will submitting to his father that he might be as a lamb led to the slaughter that all the prophecies might be fulfilled that the innocent would shed his blood for the guilty so in my bible i think i'm going to write jesus goes to the cross not by other people's plans you could disagree with me though let me know down in the margin of your bible what would you write let me know down in the comments or shoot me a message what would you do what would you write as the as the as what you would summarize this well the best verse you know the best verse i think i'm going to uh underline 25 and 26 right but uh we might also say that part of verse 20 right because that gets at the heart of what's actually going on here the motives of what's going on also we need to ask ourselves see calling what are we called to do in response to this now there's there's a a way to take applications from this that while jesus is teaching us things it's it's not the point of the tax right we might say well you need to pay your quarterly taxes if you're self-employed or you need to pay your taxes if you pay monthly taxes or you know if you collect sales tax and and you need to give those to the state well that's that's one way and that's fine but what is this actually getting at do we believe do we believe that jesus christ willingly gave up his life do we believe that jesus christ was perfectly righteous do we believe that the father sent the son and that he has given to us those who are strangers and aliens to the faith those who were the outcasts of society the sinners and the tax collectors the gluttons and the harlots has he renewed us as he made us new do we come to jesus's feet and find cleansing do we see our great savior with his face set towards jerusalem and while he is there now he has his face set towards the cross and he's going there as the triumphant king willingly paying the ransom price for his people that he might redeem us from our sins do we believe the gospel do we actually believe this this is it just seems so basic right it might even seem trite you might be like well okay you're just always saying that this is this is just you know do we believe the gospel well that's what this is called this is a gospel this is good news that the triumphant king would come and save sinners sinners like me and sinners like you and do we share that good news with others i pray that it never becomes elementary to us that we never get so sophisticated in our theology that we forget that the heart of the christian hope is jesus christ and his willingness to die for us let's pray father i pray that you would care for us today that you would let us rejoice in the gospel that we would know nothing else other than jesus christ and him crucified lord we pray that we would look to jesus christ that we would love jesus christ that you would overwhelm our hearts with joy in jesus christ we pray father that you would let us walk in spirit and in truth worshiping you as we know who we are we pray that we would become more like you have called us to be we thank you for the grace that you give us in jesus christ it's in his name we pray amen i pray that the lord blesses you today and that you go forth with grace and peace knowing the good news of jesus
