Luke 19:45–20:8

[Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this uh let's see this is wednesday afternoon october 14th that's where every weekday morning we get together we read a little bit of the bible we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together well we had a conflict schedule this morning at a meeting that had to happen and so this afternoon instead we get debra do okay debra hannah so we're gonna work through this passage are you ready okay here we go cleansing the temple you see it right here all right then he went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in it who do you think he's talk who's the he who's doing that jesus that's right saying to them it is written my house is a house of prayer but you have made it a den of thieves and he was teaching daily in the temple but the chief priests the scribes and the leaders of the people sought to destroy him and were unable to do anything for all the people were very attentive to hear him now i'm going to go up here just a little bit and deborah can you read this sentence now what happened on one of those days as he's taught people in the temple preaching and preached the gospel the chief priests and scribes together with the elders confronted him and spoke to him saying tell us by what authority you are doing these things or who has given you this authority and then what's it say after that but he but he answered and said to them i also will ask you one thing and answer me the baptism of john was it from heaven or from men and they reasoned among themselves saying what did they say if we say from seven he wills heaven he will say why then did you not believe him but if we say for men all the people will stone us for for they are pursued persuaded persuaded to john as a prophet so they answered that they did not know where it was from and jesus said to them neither will i tell you by what authority i do these things all right well let's see here so we have two stories we need to how do we always do this what's the first thing we do we do a what does a stand for what is this about about and then we'll do b and b is what is the what is the benefit best verse close and then c calling what are we called to do so a this first part here verses 45 to 40 48 right jesus just came into the temple jess came into jerusalem writing on a do you remember what he was writing on in the last story when they put all their their cloaks on his on his animal a donkey a donkey or a cult that's right and uh he goes into the into the city and what he does is he goes to the temple and he began to drive out those who bought and sold and it's saying to them it is written my house will be a house of prayer but you have made it a den of thieves what does jesus do he blips over the table well that was another time right but here he says and he was teaching daily in the temple so there he's teaching this time right so he's teaching that time so he's teaching in the temple so what would you write here for this for this part jesus what does jesus do how would you write that in your bible you know i put in my bible i would probably say something like the king cleanses his house right the king cleanses his house is his house to be a house of prayer and is is it his father's house yes so is it his house yes is he the king yes yeah he's cleaning his house that's right uh but is everybody happy about that no no right the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders yeah the leaders the elders that's right they confronted him right and what did they want to know right here what did they want to know by what authority yeah you're doing these things or who would give you through this authority right they're saying hey dude what are you doing in here what are you doing man are you allowed to do this stuff in here who said you could do this stuff in here and what does jesus tell them he gives up instead of telling them something he gives them a question and he asked him about john the baptist baptism what did he ask him with john the baptist baptism was it from heaven or from men and did they give him a straight answer no no because if if they say from heaven then he'll say why didn't you believe him but if we say from men what would the people do stillness it's donuts right because they were persuaded that he was a prophet so they won't answer him so jesus says i'm not going to answer you either then i'm not going to tell you what authority so what is this i'm going to say the earthly rulers don't like jesus's authority is that okay would you say something different oh is that sound good that sounds good that sounds good okay what's the best verse to summarize this section well i think in my bible i think i would uh underline verses one and two as well as verse 46 i think those get along together i think those are the best verses what i think this is getting at the heart at is that jesus has come in as the king of jerusalem he's cleaning the temple he's doing his stuff he's making things right again and it's shaking things up the scribes aren't happy the priests aren't happy the elders aren't happy hold on who said you're allowed to cause all this ruckus and jesus says you won't even listen to john the baptist you wouldn't listen to the prophet i'm not going to tell you by what authority you know full well just like did they know that john was sent by god yes did they know that jesus had the authority to do that yes did your hair get stuck on the mic yeah that was silly all right so i think they knew it and jesus says i'm not going to tell you you know it you know it right what do you think what do you think this teaches us in our in our lives hmm that's a heart this is always the hard part right because now it's taking god's word and saying okay how do we put it in our hearts and how do we how do we do it with our hands how do we lay it up in our hearts and practice in our lives well do we believe that jesus christ is the king of heaven does jesus have the authority that's right does jesus want us to have pure religion yes does jesus want god to have all the glory yes does jesus want prayer in his house instead of people exchanging a whole bunch of money and being in the world yeah those are all good things do you have any other thoughts on this passage you did a great job you ready to pray okay let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word we thank you that your king has arrived and he is making all things right again lord we pray that we would worship you in spirit and in truth that we would not set our hearts on the desires of this world but that we would follow after jesus christ we pray lord that you would make these things true
