Luke 20:27-38

get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together thanks for joining me this morning we are at luke chapter 20 verses 27 through 38 luke chapter 20 ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word we pray father that you would let us know the truths in this word the eternal truths that you reveal to us about the way things really are we pray that we would believe them that we have ears to hear them and hearts to receive them in faith in jesus name amen why don't we go ahead and get into our passage this morning luke chapter 20 beginning at verse 27 then some of the sadducees who deny that there is a resurrection came to him and asked saying teacher moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife and he dies without children his brother should take his wife and raise up offspring for his brother now there were seven brothers and the first took a wife and died without children and the second took her as wife and he died childless then the third took her in like manor the seventh also and they left no children and died last of all the woman died also therefore in the resurrection whose life does she become for all seven had her as a wife jesus answered and said to them the sons of this age marry and are given in marriage but those who are counted worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage nor can they die anymore for they are equal to the angels and are sons of god being sons of the resurrection but moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised when he called the lord the god of abraham the god of isaac and the god of jacob for he is not the god of the dead but of the living for all live to him well what a great passage we have for us today people are still trying to trick jesus up we need to ask ourselves a what is this about be what's the best verse to summarize this section c what are we called to do in response to this so first a what is this about you get one sentence one sentence to summarize this whole section i i love when you guys tell me this i'm gonna just go ahead and break this down a little bit and i'd encourage you down in the chat bar to let me know how would you give me just a one sentence summary every once in a while i leave this up to you and i'm gonna ask you that today now you can go with the sadducees question the resurrection but i think i would phrase that a little bit differently but i want to hear from you let me know down down below well what are the sadducees doing right the the author of this gospel luke he tells us right away the sadducees are asking them questions but they don't even believe the resurrection but they're going to ask them questions about the resurrection they're going to trip them up so they come and they they have a hypothetical situation for them right there's this there's this woman and there's this man the man has seven brothers and you know what moses says about leave right marriage is that you know if your brother dies you're supposed to take his wife and you're supposed to bear up offspring that will uphold that family name and the inheritance won't pass out of israel but this woman has a husband her husband dies childless she has goes to the brother the brother has her as a wife he dies childless third fourth fifth sixth seventh all the way through the line and finally she dies no children at the resurrection square you know scare quotes whose wife is he whose wife is she right and jesus says something amazing to them jesus said since answered and said to them the sons of this age marry and are given in marriage but those who are accounted worthy to attain that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage see here and now in this current age as we're waiting for the perusia we're waiting for jesus to return we're waiting for god to come and to judge the world and to establish his kingdom on earth perfectly we're giving and we're taking in marriage but in heaven there's no more giving and taking in marriage in heaven we have perfect communion with one another with perfect communion with god we have perfect fellowship with one another now this don't don't take this the wrong way with all sorts of weird and and crazy connotations right but but the the companionship that true love that we have with people i mean i think about the love that my grandmother has for my grandfather who just died a week and a few days ago you know that deep intimacy that she had with him where where she loved him with all of of her sharing her life with him that type of love that exists between a husband and wife that type of deep connection is the type of deep connection connection god is saying that's what love is supposed to look like and that type of deep love is what we're supposed to share with one another yes it happens in a special way in marriage but in the resurrection there's not going to be giving or taking in marriage because we're going to love one another perfectly because we are going to be in god's love forever perfectly but see the sadducees don't even get it because in the sadducees mind you're dead you're gone you're buried in the grave and it's over but he says no no no you don't even know your old testament dudes hold on here for one second back up and remember what moses said at the burning bush what did he call god the father of abraham and of isaac and of jacob he was then presently the father of abraham isaac and jacob even though abraham isaac and jacob had been long dead in the grave jesus is telling them look god is not the god of the dead but god is the god of the living and he's the one who is the god of those who are raised up from the grave i don't know about you but that gives me a great deal of hope hope and the resurrection that one day you know there's a cemetery right out here just outside that window there there's a cemetery tomorrow one of our dear members from the church will be buried in that cemetery but she won't be there forever that's just a temporary address someday jesus christ is going to return again and she will be raised up bodily from the dead and she will physically be reunited with her soul and god will have her in his kingdom forever this is these are the beautiful promises of the christian hope if jesus was raised from the dead as the first born of the resurrection he is also the firstborn of the second resurrection of our resurrection so this this beautiful reality of the resurrection that jesus is pointing at that gives us a great deal of hope even in the midst of our pain and sorrow and discomfort so what's the best verse to summarize those you got homework to do right you got to tell me down in the in the in the comments you got to let me know what's your one sentence summary what's the best verse to summarize this well i think i'm going to underline verse 37 and 38 right you can disagree with that let me know down in the comments would you disagree well what are we called to do what's our response supposed to be to a passage like this do you believe in the resurrection of the dead and i love the nicene creed and i i love how it ends with we believe in the resurrection of the dead and we believe that death is not the end of the story but that at our death we are immediately passed into glory and we enjoy perfect fellowship with god but there will come a day when god will raise the just and the unjust and that he will he will divide those who love him from those who don't and do we believe if we have faith in jesus christ if we are in christ and christ is in us if we believe these words about jesus and who he says he is that we will be with him forever that he will be our god and he and we will be his people and that he will neither leave us nor forsake us let's pray father we thank you so much for what a joy it is to know in the truth of the resurrection we look forward with great anticipation lord that that day when that will should come that will come lord we pray that you would care for us this day that you would give us an anchor of our souls in jesus christ our savior and the firstborn of the dead in jesus name amen well may god bless you today and
