Scripture Passage
Christ Questions the Scribes
Matt. 22:41–23:14; Mark 12:35–40
39 Then some of the scribes answered and said, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 But after that they dared not question Him anymore.
41 And He said to them, “How can they say that the Christ is the Son of David? 42 Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
43 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
44 Therefore David calls Him ‘Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
45 Then, in the hearing of all the people, He said to His disciples, 46 “Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 47 who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Lk 20:39–47.
A — About
What Is This Passage About?
Jesus uses Psalm 110 to show that the Christ is not merely David's descendant but David's Lord, yet the scribes do not truly believe. He warns against religious teachers whose outward honor and long prayers conceal pride, exploitation, and unbelief.
B — Best Verse
Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?
Luke 20:42–43
the lord said to my lord sit at my right hand and i will make your enemies your footstool
Bryan explicitly underlines Psalm 110:1 as quoted in Luke because it identifies the Messiah as David's Lord who reigns at God's right hand.
C — Called or Christ
C — Called to Do
Believe and worship Jesus Christ rather than merely accumulating Bible knowledge. Submit to Scripture, guard against teachers who peddle the gospel for honor or gain, and keep the risen, reigning Christ before your eyes.

we get together we have a cup of coffee we get to god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 20 verses 39 through 47 luke chapter 20 verses 39 through 47. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your great love for us we thank you for the joy we have in jesus christ father we pray that as we come to your word that you would bless us we pray that we would humble ourselves before you and that you would teach us and let us live out what you say in jesus name amen well let's go ahead and jump into the passage luke chapter 20. then some of the scribes answered and said teacher you have spoken well but after that they dared not question him anymore and he said to them how can you say that the christ is the son of david now david himself said in the book of psalms the lord said to my lord sit at my right hand and i will make your enemies your footstool therefore david calls him lord how is he then his son then in the hearing of all the people he said to his disciples beware of the scribes who desire to go around in long robes love greetings in the marketplaces the best seats in the synagogues and the best places at the feast who devour widows houses and for a pretense make long prayers these will receive greater condemnation we'll stop the reading there and we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse for this to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about quick one sentence summary what would you write in the margin of your bible for what this is about i think in the margin of my bible i would say jesus is the christ and the scribes don't believe it jesus is the christ and the scribes don't believe it maybe you would disagree that's fine what would you write in the margin of your bible feel free to let me know hey juan good to see you let me know what would you write let's just kind of look at a few things here it's interesting jesus says just before this remember yesterday he was talking about the resurrection and he was talking about the sadducees who were trying to corner him and he said that god is not the god of the dead but of the living and as he he goes through all this how do the scribes respond the scribes are like yeah yeah guys right yeah yeah yeah jesus that's right teacher you have spoken well and they didn't dare it ask him any more questions but then jesus goes and he asks them a question right he says how can they say that christ that the christ is the son of david and he takes them to psalm 110 verse 1 the lord has said unto my lord sit thou at my right hand how can hold on david is the king how can david have writing this have someone greater than himself he is the king how does this work out right therefore david calls him lord how then is he his son see jesus is trying to get to the point to them the christ was going to come from david but one greater than david would be the true christ one greater than david would be adonai lord and here jesus is standing right in front of them the scribe should know this they just said yeah he knows the scripture he's right he's right when he says god is not the god of the dead but of the living he's right with that but then jesus says hold on here let's go back to psalm 110. what does it teach about the christ and he's pointing to himself he's pointing to himself there and so in the hearing of all the people man jesus is really setting himself up here jesus rebukes the scribes in front of all the people he tells his disciples to beware of them right beware of the scribes why because they like these huge shows of religion but they don't have true faith how we might say well how'd you get there right well no come with me right verse 46 verse 46 who desire to go around in long robes love greetings in the marketplaces the best seats in the synagogue and the best places for the feasts hey hey denny it's good to see you too what's going on here well what's going on here is that they have big shows of religion right they want to wear their long robes they want to be seen by people they take the prominent seats in the houses but but it's all for show they might know the letter of the word but they don't know the power of god they might know the jots and the tittles of the law but they don't believe in the one who gave them the law and they're doing all of this for their own wealth right this is what verse 47 says who devour widows houses and for a pretense make long prayers these will receive greater condemnation it's not just about knowing the bible it's about believing in the christ the bible holds out what's the best verse to summarize this well i think in my bible i'm going to go ahead and underline psalm 110 verse 1 the lord said to my lord sit at my right hand till i make your enemies a footstool and then i'm going to put verse 46 right beware of the scribes who desire who who desire to go around in long robes and love the greetings in the marketplace i think people like this still exist today i'm going to just jump right into c calling i think people like this still exist today i think there are people teachers who know the bible really well they might even know the ancient languages they might know aramaic and they might know you know hebrew and they might know greek but they don't subject themselves to the actual teaching of the word there are books filled filled critical commentaries and liberal commentaries filled and by liberal i mean theologically liberal commentaries who will know all the jots and the tittles and will explain everything away i think there are people pastors teachers in the world who paul warns about as charlatans people who go about peddling the word of god just saying whatever they need to say to make it sound pleasing to people but they don't actually believe in jesus christ they don't they don't cry out to the king you know and so you got to be beware of people like this right you gotta you gotta ask yourselves do they actually believe what the words say do they understand about the christ i hope you do that with me by all means if i'm if i'm ever preaching anything other than jesus christ i hope you hit the end button and go to something else and never come back but you go yeah you got to be on your guard as someone not just paying attention to the jots and tittle but do they actually believe it i remember great story sorry i'm sermonizing here i remember a great story about a man who came to hear george whitefield preach george whitfield was this famous revivalist preacher and somebody came and oh no it wasn't george whitfield i'm sorry this was martin lloyd jones and someone came into the chapel and and they said you know can you believe what this guy is saying he says no but he sure does hey do we actually believe that jesus christ is the one who yahweh said to his adonai that he'll sit at his right hand indeed that is what jesus christ has done jesus has just taught on the resurrection jesus was going to be slain jesus was going to be killed jesus was going to be buried but on the third day he would rise again and after a period of time he would ascend up into heaven and sit down at the right hand of god the father almighty i'd encourage you to go pick up your bible and read revelation chapter 5 6 and 7 and hear of what it is to stand in the throne room of god with jesus the lamb who is slain who is there on the throne now let's go ahead and pray father we thank you so much for this day father we pray that we would believe in jesus christ that he would be ever before our eyes we pray that we would join the myriads and myriads of angels who worship him we thank you lord for what you have done in our lives we pray that you would let us be on guard against those who would want to peddle the gospel but that we would hunger and thirst for you in jesus name amen well may god bless you today and may he fill you with peace bye
