Luke 19:28-44

[Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning this were every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare chance to get away from my kids you and i we get together we have a cup of coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 19 verses 28 through 44 luke chapter 19 verses 28 through 44. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray and father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray lord that you would bless us as we read your word now we pray that we would not just read them on the page as a something that's interesting to learn but lord that we algorithm to get other people to see this hit that like button let's go ahead and get into god's word luke chapter 19 beginning at verse 28. when he had said this he went on ahead going up to jerusalem and it came to pass when he drew near to bethpage and bethany at the mountain called olivette that he sent two of his disciples saying go into the village opposite you where as you enter you will find a colt tied on which no one has ever sat loose it and bring it here and if anyone asks you why are you losing it thus you saw say to him because the lord has need of it so those who were sent went their way and found it just as jesus had told them but as they were loosing the colt the owner of it said to them why are you losing the colt and they said the lord has need of him then they brought him to jesus and they threw their own clothes on the colt and they sat and they set jesus on him and as he went many spread their clothes on the road then as he was now drawing near the descent of the mount of olives the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise god with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen saying blessed is the king who comes in the name of the lord peace in heaven and glory in the highest and some of the pharisees called to him from the crowd teacher rebuke your disciples but he answered and said to them i tell you that if these should keep silent the stones would immediately cry out now he drew near now as he drew near he saw the city and wept over it saying if you had known even you especially in this your day the things that make for your peace but now they are hidden from your eyes for the days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you surround you and close you in on every side and level you and your children within you to the ground and they will not leave in you one stone upon another because you did not know the time of your visitation well what a impactful passage we have for us today we need to ask ourselves first a what is this about b what's the best first to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words so if you have your bible open with you what would you write if you had to write just a little one sentence summary for how you would get at the heart of this passage what would you write i think i would write something like the king arrives just as it was foretold the king arrives just as it was foretold that's what i would say but maybe you would write something different let me know down in the comments would you would you write something different or something similar to that how did i get there how would we get there well i think we get there by just looking at a few things right it's interesting that jesus remember he had set his face towards jerusalem he was going there he's told his disciples what's going to happen and as they're going there they're they they drew near to beth page and bethany two little kind of breakfast breakfast in tight towns just outside the city they get to the mount of all of that and he sends two of his disciples into town it's interesting what the omniscient all-knowing jesus says right he he not only does he know his death he knows everything that's going to happen and he tells them go into the town right go into jerusalem and you're going to find a cold and when you find that cold you're going to find this coal and nobody's ever sat on it before and i want you to go and loosen that cold but somebody's probably going to come out and they're going to say to you what are you doing what are you doing and tell them the lord has need of it jesus knows exactly what's going on jesus is going to go on an untamed animal and he's going to enter into jerusalem and it happens exactly as jesus said now it's interesting that jesus doesn't tell them to say you know jesus needs it the prophet needs it the great teacher no the lord has need of it jesus christ himself has need of it well they do it they find it just as as he told them and as they go they put their their own cloaks their own clothes on top of the colt and they set jesus on the colt and he rides into jerusalem and people along the way take off their clothes take off their clothes and put them on the ground this is exactly what they did for jehu when they made him king right this is a sign that the king is is making his great procession into the city and as they go uh you know the descendants of of the mount of olives the whole multitude of disciples began to rejoice in praising god with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen saying blessed is the king who comes in the name of the lord peace and heaven and glory in the highest blessed is the king who comes in the name of the lord indeed that's exactly what jesus christ means christ means messiah messiah means anointed one he was the anointed one of god to become king this is coming straight out of the book of zechariah if we go to zechariah 9 9 we find rejoice greatly o jotter of jerusalem shout o daughter of jerusalem behold your king is coming to you he is just and having salvation lowly and riding on a donkey a cult the fowl of a donkey it's happening just as the scriptures prophesied it's happening just as was told and this is not just in zechariah but we find it now even psalm 118 blessed is he who comes in the name of the lord we have blessed you from the house of the lord this is psalm 118 meeting zechariah 9 9 everything is coming together just as god had planned it jesus knows what's going to happen god planned it from the beginning it was god's choice they were going towards jerusalem and it was going to happen the king had finally arrived the true son of david was there this is why in the beginning of luke he had to bring us all the way back to king david in the genealogy because now the king was here now the time was ripe now he had entered in and the pinnacle of what everybody was expecting was there that he might finally take the throne of david but he's not going to take it the way that he thinks they're going to because he's going to be the suffering servant he's going to be the suffering king they have an expectation but we're going to find out that jesus doesn't meet their expectation but it's interesting the pharisees hey get this get them to be quiet right they can't do this there's blaspheming and jesus says if they don't do this the stones are going to cry out and then he looks at jerusalem and jesus weeps but jesus looks at the unbelief jesus looks at the hardness of heart jesus looks at their at their pushing back of of him as their king he knows that there's consequences for it that the embankments are going to be built up and the city is going to be destroyed it's not going to be too much longer from this just a mere 40 years that the romans would come and destroy rip down the temple this is in part what jesus is talking about is going to happen here the hardness of heart i think in my bible if i'm going to be underlining the best verse that summarizes this section i'm going to underline verse 37 and 38. i think that's the best verse that gets at what's going on here see calling what are we called to do in response to these words do you sing the praises of jesus do you know that the great king has arrived not the king that this world expects but the king that god has provided do you praise god that one has come in the name of the lord do you open wide the gates of your life knowing that the king has arrived and that he is the one who sits upon his throne that jesus after his death and burial and resurrection that jesus ascended up into heaven that he sat down at the right hand of god the father and the father gave him all the nations psalm 2 says that god has given him the rule over all peoples is that the jesus you serve not the one of just just jerusalem but the one who rules forever and will come again with the crown upon his head and will rule with justice and equity is your heart warm by thinking about that king do you desire to serve that king jesus the one to whom we get to sing his praises forever and ever with the myriads and myriads of angels let's pray father we pray that your fame that your glory would expand through all the earth lord that your reputation that your magnificence would spread forth that more and more people would come to see jesus christ the one who has come in the name of the lord the one who has conquered death the one who has sat upon a heavenly throne the one to whom every knee must bow and every tongue must confess that jesus christ is lord father bury these truths in our hearts and we pray that we would live them out in our
