Luke 18:31–43

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday morning this is october 10th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends before my kids wake up or i get a spare second you and i we get together we grab some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 18 verses 31-43 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word lord we thank you so much for this day and we do thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us as we read your word that we would cry out to you and have our souls healed in jesus name amen well real quick if you like that in that new intro video feel free to give me a at verse 31 then he took the twelve aside and said to them behold we are going up to jerusalem oh that battery died let's see if we can get this fixed hold on bear with me one second i'm so sorry emergency emergency battery swap hey hey there we go so sorry about that i had an emergency battery swap there behold we are going up to jerusalem and all things that are written by the prophet concerning the son of man will be accomplished for he will be delivered to the gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon they will scourge him and kill him and the third day he will rise again but they understood none of these things this saying was hidden from them and they did not know the things which were spoken then it happened as he was coming near jericho that a certain blind man sat by the road begging and hearing a multitude passing by he asked what it meant so they told him that jesus of nazareth was passing by and he cried out saying jesus son of david have mercy on me those who went before warned him that he should be quiet but he cried out all the more son of david have mercy on me so jesus stood still and commanded him to be brought to him and when he had come near he asked him saying what do you want me to do for you he said lord that i may receive my sight then jesus said to him receive your sight your faith has made you well and immediately he received his sight and followed him glorifying god and all the people when they saw it gave praise to god well we need to ask ourselves quickly a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well i put it in the facebook preview there that this is about jesus showing mercy even in the face of death jesus looks at his disciples he gathers at 12 together and he tells them what's going to happen he says i'm going up to jerusalem right and why are they going up to jerusalem and he tells them right he tells them the son of man the will of the prophets concerning the son of man will be accomplished for they will for he will be delivered to the gentiles and will be mocked and insulted and spit upon and they will scourge him and kill him and the third day he will rise again but they didn't get it they didn't understand it see they they we have the benefit of foresight we are able to look back and we know in the past what was going on but they didn't and so what does jesus say here to them but he tells them he tells them what's going to happen he tells them what's going on he tells them but they don't get it but even in the midst of that even in the pain of that jesus it goes and other going by jerusalem or jericho there's a guy there right he said what's all this commotion about right and they said jesus the son of nazareth is come and he cries out jesus son of david have mercy on me and for she should be quiet be quiet be quiet right don't bother him he cries out even louder all the more desperate jesus son of david have mercy on me he knows that jesus is his only hope he knows that jesus is the only place to have not just his body made well but to be made whole he cries out to jesus to have mercy on him to show him compassion and what does jesus do even though jesus is on his way to jerusalem to be killed what do you want me to do for you he asked the man right jesus stops and he looks at him with compassion he says lord that i might receive my side and it's interesting what happens right jesus just doesn't tell him receive your sight but he says your faith has made you well and the man immediately received his sight followed jesus and glorified god it's very similar to that leper who had come back though he was a samaritan and came back to jesus and fell on his face and followed jesus in my bible that's what i'm going to underline i'm going to underline verse 42 and 43. that's what i think is the best verses to summarize this and i'd i'm going to have to underline as well verse 32 right jesus knows full well what's waiting for him in jerusalem jesus knows full well what's going to happen to him jesus knows exactly what is going to transpire but jesus came to show mercy jesus came to display and fulfill the will of his father the love of god towards sinners he says it to them in the first story and he shows it to them in the second story that jesus came to die they came to give life and to give it abundantly what are we called to do will we cry out lord son of david have mercy on me will we beat our chest like that tax collector in the center in the temple asking god to show mercy to us sinners or even this morning as we were doing bible study with the men well we say what what paul says is a trustworthy saying in first timothy 1 15. that i am the chief most of sinners writer are we those who will acknowledge our absolute desperate need for jesus christ are we those who will look to jesus christ every single day yes you are those who are saved if you are in jesus christ yes if you have jesus christ you have indeed been saved by grace through faith but yet we are still those who wrestle with our flesh and cling to jesus christ with all of our hearts let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day lord we pray thanking you so much that even technology cannot keep us from your promises lord we pray that you would let us soak in your grace and cling to jesus christ alone it's in his name we pray amen well may you go this day in grace and peace and maybe your heart be prepared for worshiping to god god tomorrow on the lord's day
