Scripture Passage
Rich Young Ruler
Matt. 19:16–26; Mark 10:17–27
18 Now a certain ruler asked Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
19 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.’ ”
21 And he said, “All these things I have kept from my youth.”
22 So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
23 But when he heard this, he became very sorrowful, for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he became very sorrowful, He said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
26 And those who heard it said, “Who then can be saved?”
27 But He said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.”
Christ Will Reward Sacrifice
Matt. 19:27–29; Mark 10:28–30
28 Then Peter said, “See, we have left all and followed You.”
29 So He said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or parents or brothers or wife or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Lk 18:18–30.

thank you for your word lord we pray that you would let us love you with all of our hearts father we pray that you would have these words seep deep into our souls and that we would find our joy in you alone in jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 18 verses 18 through 30. hey josh good to see you this morning now a certain ruler asked him saying good teacher what shall i do to inherit eternal life so jesus said to him why do you call me good no one is good but one that is god you know the commandments do not commit adultery do not murder do not steal do not bear false witness honor your father and mother and he said all these things i have kept from my youth so when jesus heard these things he said to him you still lack one thing sell all you have and distribute to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven and come follow me but when he heard this he became very sorrowful for he was very rich and when jesus saw that he became very sorrowful he said how hard is it for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of god for it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god and those who heard it said who then can be saved but he said the things which are impossible with men are possible with god and then the next section then peter said we have left all and followed you so he said to them assuredly i say to you there is no one who has left house or parent or brother or wife or children from the sake of the kingdom of god who will not receive many times more in this present time and in the age to come eternal life well what a great passage we have for us we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize these words and see what are we called to do in response to these so a what is this even about oh rich guy comes jesus and he asked the right question what must i do to inherit eternal life and what does jesus say well i think that's where we're going to go ahead and stop and i'm going to tell you what i would write in the margin of my bible i would write that we must love god more than anything else in this life we must love god more than anything else in this life maybe you would write it differently but let me show you why i think that's what's going on here why god has given this to us jesus he comes and he asks this right question and he says hold on first of all we need to talk about who i am and who god is and god is the one who is good and the good god gave you commandments you know the commandments and he takes them to the last six commandments or the second table of law our duty towards other people he said you know don't murder don't commit adultery don't steal don't bear false testimony honor your parents right he gives them all these second table of the law ten commandments he says great i've been doing all those right he's happy he's excited like yeah i'm close he said all these things i've kept from my use and when jesus heard this thing he said still lack one thing so all that you have and just distribute to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven and come and follow me and at that point it was too much why because he had great riches see jesus had taken him to the last six commandments and he thought oh yeah i got this but then jesus puts his finger on the first and second commandment doesn't he he has a god in his heart greater than the lord see jesus puts his finger on this guy's heart issue that he loves the things of this world he loves his riches and there's no way he could give up of his riches to go and follow jesus see he had a divided loyalty he thought he could serve both god and money and jesus is putting his finger on and saying god himself and the flesh is in front of you will you sell all you have give it to the poor and follow me will you give away the earthly possessions you have now to get eternal rewards what's most important to you the guy walks away sad and jesus says you know after this it's easier for a camel to go into the go through the eye of a needle than for one rich person to enter into the kingdom of heaven and this is hard right this is jesus doesn't say this is easily jesus doesn't degrade the guy this is this is the reality that this world so latches on to us that the things of this world the physical things are easier to love easier to grasp onto but what is peter's response who then can be saved right hold on we we left everyone right we we left our families i was i was with my brother and i was with my father and we were fishing in the boat and he said come follow after me and i will make you fishers of men and i immediately dropped my net and followed you right that's essentially what what peter is saying and jesus says assuredly i say to you there is no one who has left house or parents or brother or wife or child for the sake of the kingdom of god who shall not receive many times more in this present time and in the age to come eternal life presently right now there are blessings in following christ and forevermore there will be blessing upon blessing upon blessing upon blessing in my bible that's what i'm going to highlight i'm going to highlight verse 29 and 30 and then i'm also going to highlight this bottom section here i know it's more than one verse but i think these verses get at the heart of what jesus is saying here so we need to ask ourselves lastly see calling what are we called to do in response to these words well do you love jesus and i'm not talking about like passively love jesus but do we love jesus so much that it would be a costly love do we love jesus so much that even when it gets hard we follow him do we love jesus so much that even when it might cost us our job we follow him do we love jesus so much that even though it might cost us our lives do we follow him do we seek his kingdom first do we do both tables of the law do we love the lord our god with all of our heart mind soul and strength and are we willing to give up everything for the pearl of great price would we sell the field would we sell our house would we leave father and mother would we pick up our cross daily and follow jesus i don't know what that looks like in your life maybe in your life that looks like getting rid of some friendships that you dearly love maybe in your life that looks like getting rid of some things in your life that have been stealing your joy away from jesus maybe that looks like getting a different job so you could actually go and worship with god's people on on his day i don't know what it's going to look like for you but what is costly following of jesus look like in your life feel free to shoot me a message and as you think about that as you pray about i'll pray with you that you would have the courage to do that let's pray oh lord we thank you so much for the costly love of jesus that you did not spare your own son but that you offered him up that we might have eternal life we pray that we would love you with all of our hearts we pray that you we would seek after you and that we would desire you father we pray that you would strip us of our love for anything that would have us with a divided allegiance please father by the power of your holy spirit do this in jesus name amen well if this video is helpful to you feel free to hit the like button or share it with a friend but for the rest of this day i pray that you go with grace and peace bye [Music] [Music] so you
