Joshua 19:10-48

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at Joshua chapter 19 verses 10 through 48. We're going to quickly go through the rest of the tribes beside Joshua and Levi. We'll talk about them next time, or in the next two times. Let's have some coffee. We'll pray. We'll figure out what does Dan, Naphtali, Asher, and Naphtali get. Let's pray.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. What a blessing it is to get to hear from you, to read your word. Father, we pray that as we read your word, that you would please instruct us. Lord, teach us. Let us walk in your ways. Let us know what you have for us in life. In Jesus' name, amen. All right, here we go. We're at Joshua chapter 19, beginning at verse 10.
I'm going to open up the map here so you can see. So we're going to, just so you kind of get a lay of the land here, first we're going to talk about Zebulun. So we're going to talk about Zebulun, and then we're going to talk about Issachar, and then we're going to talk about Asher, and then Naphtali, and we'll finish up way down here at Dan. So let's start with Zebulun here. So verse 10 through 16, Zebulun.
The third lot came out for the children of Zebulun according to their families, and the border of their inheritance was Sarid. Their border went towards the west and to Marala, went to Dabasheth, and extended along the brook that is east of Joknim. Then from Sarid it went eastward toward the sunrise along the border of Chisloth-Tabor and went out toward Daberath passing by Japhia. And from there it passed along on the east of Gath-Hefer toward Eth-Kazin and extended to Ramon, which borders on Nea. Then the border went around on the north side of Hananothon and it ended in the valley of Jif-Thath-El. Included were Katath, Nahalal, Shimron, Idila and Bethlehem, twelve cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families.
These cities with their villages. Alright, well now let's go a little bit over to Issachar. So, 17 through 23. The fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families, and their territory went to Jezreel and included Chesiloth, Shunem, Haphraim, Shion, Anaharoth, Rabeeth, Kishun, Abez, Remeth, Inganim, Inhada, and Beth-pazaz. And the border reached to Tabor.
Shahaziam and Beth Shemesh. Their border ended at the Jordan, 16 cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar, according to their families, the cities, and their villages. So remember it said the Jordan River was their eastern edge here. So now let's go up north and by the coast to Asher. So Asher, 24 through 31. The fifth lot came out to the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families, and their territory included Helkath, Hali, Betin, Aksaf, Alamelech, Amad, Mishal.
It reached to Mount Caramel westward along the brook Syhor-Libnath. It turned toward the sunrise to Beth Dagon, and it reached to Zebulun and to the valley of Jiphthah El, then northward beyond Beth Emek and Neel, bypassing Kabul, which was on the left, including Ebron, Rehob, Haman, and Qana, as far as greater Sidon. and the border turned to Ramah and to the fortified city of Tyre. Then the border turned to Hosa and ended at the sea by the region of Aqzib. Also, Ummah Afek and Rehob were included, 22 cities with their villages.
This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher, according to their families, these cities with their villages. All right, so now let's move a little bit over. So it mentioned that it bordered Naphtali. And so now we're here at Naphtali. The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali, for the children of Naphtali, according to their families.
And their border began at Heleph, and closed the territory from the terebinth tree in Zanamim, It ended at the Jordan. From Helef, the border extended westward to Aznoth-Tabor and went out from there towards Hakuk. It adjoined Zebulun on the south side and Asher on the west side, and ended at Judah by the Jordan toward the sunrise. And the fortified cities are Zedim, Zer, Hamath, Rakta, Chinareth, Adama, Rama, Hazor, Kedesh, Edri, In Hazor, Iron, Migdal El, Horem, Beth Anath, and Beth Shemesh.
19 cities with their villages. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families, the cities, and their villages. Well now we move to a totally different area. Now we move way down here all the way down to Dan, way by the coast, just to the east of Ephraim. Verse 40 and following. The seventh lot, this is the final lot, the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan, according to their families.
And the territory of their inheritance was Azorah, Ashtol, Irshemesh, Shalalabin, Aijalon, Jethla, Elon, Timna, Ekron, Elteke, Gebeothon, Baloth, Jehud, Ben Barak, Gathrimon, Majarkon, and Rakon with the region near Joppa. And the border of the children of Dan went beyond these, because the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it. And they struck it with the edge of the sword, took possession of it, and dwelt in it. They called Leshem Dan, after the name of Dan their father. This is the inheritance of the children of Dan, according to their families, these cities with their villages. Well, we've covered a lot of ground, all pun intended. What are we, A, what's this about? B, what's the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do? So what was this about?
This was about the giving by lot of the land to those other tribes. So Dan Issachar, Zebulon, Asher, and Naphtali. So these are the different tribes now. The seven tribes have now all gotten their lot. Remember Simeon I did with Daniel last time we were together. And so that's what this is about, these different tribes getting it. The Lord's allotted it by lot. He's given it to them as an inheritance. Now it's their job to go and possess it.
Here's one of the things I thought was interesting here. Did you notice? Verse 47, And the border of the children of Dan went beyond these, because the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it. And they struck it with the edge of the sword, took possession of it, and dwelt in it. They called Leshem Dan after the name of Dan their father." Now, Dan, you might say, well, where was that? That's way up here. Way up here. Dan is so zealous.
They go and they take land way up there and they name it after their forefather, after what their tribe is named for. And so, right, this is one of these amazing things of God is moving in his people. Some of them are more lethargic. They aren't able to push out the people and they kind of start losing heart and losing steam. And other people are really zealous and they will go even beyond and above and beyond the call of duty. And so there's different amounts of faithfulness and zeal amongst the people of God and So one of the things that I think is interesting here So I would underline just the first verse of each of those sections as what's this about each part each?
Tribe is getting their own land by lot, but last see what are we called to do? Well doing one trust the Lord and that His allotment for us in life is His will. Do we trust His providence and sovereignty? And do we know that what He is doing is for our good and for His glory?
But also, don't grow weary of doing good. The days are evil and sometimes it's hard and life is difficult. Don't give up. Thank God it's good. But we need to stop, I know I'm really guilty of this, it's really easy to stop resting in the Lord and instead just rest generally. Instead of trusting in the Lord and then as I rest in Him being filled with the delight of fervor and zeal to go and do things for Him, Instead, I start resting in other things, resting in riches or comfort. I'm naturally conflict-averse, and so I might not want to go and to engage in the type of conflict and things that need to be done, but I think God calls us to not grow weary of doing good. Don't give up the assembling of yourselves together, as is the habit of some.
We need to provoke each other. We need to love each other. We need to encourage each other. And these are different tribes. They're getting their different lands, but they're going to need to work together cooperatively to take charge of those lands. And I think one of the things that Dan is probably doing here is encouraging his brothers up north, right? You could do this. Come on. We'll come up there and do it with you and for you. Come on, let's do it.
Are we a band of brothers in the church now? Do we care for one another? I hope I'm an encouragement to you. I hope that's what all this coffee and devotion stuff is for. Isn't, you know, Brian just being prideful out here doing it, but I really do pray that this spurs you on towards love and good deeds, that it makes you love God, helps you love God. I can't make you do anything. The Holy Spirit is the one that does that, but I hope that we encourage each other to remember how good the Lord is. and that we spur one another on to continue to walk in His ways, as we look forward to the inheritance He's given us.
All this inheritance stuff here is pointing towards our inheritance, which is in Jesus, kept safe for us in heaven, 1 Peter chapter 1. And so we look to Him. We trust that He has His ways ready for us. Let's pray. Father, we thank You. Lord, for the lines have fallen to us in pleasant places. You have given us an amazing inheritance in Jesus. And Father, we pray that we would follow you. We pray that we would trust you all of our lives. You are good. God, you are so good. Always keeping your promises. Please don't let us grow weary and stop following you. In Jesus' name, amen. God bless you. May you walk in the joy and peace that the great shepherd, Jesus Christ, leads you to.
