John 7:14–24

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning november or december 1st hey welcome to december that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word together this morning let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for what a rich blessing it is to come to your word we pray father that you might open our ears that we might hear that you might enlighten our eyes that we might see that we might know who jesus christ is and bow before him as our eternal king in jesus name amen okay john chapter 7 verses 14 through 24. well jeff schneider just popped on if you recognize the last name that's my dad how you doing it going dad um why don't we go ahead and and get into this john chapter 7 beginning at verse 14 and we'll go through verse 24. now about the middle of the feast jesus went up into the temple and taught and the jews marveled saying how does this man know letters having never studied jesus answered them and said my doctrine is not mine but his who sent me if anyone wills to do his will he shall know concerning the doctrine whether it is from god or whether i speak of my own authority he who speaks for from himself seeks his own glory but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is true and no unrighteousness is in him do not did not moses give you the law yet none of you keeps the law why did you seek to kill me the people answered and said you have a demon who is seeking to kill you jesus answered and said to them i did one work and you all marvel moses therefore gave you circumcision not that it is from moses but from the fathers and you circumcise a man on the sabbath if a man receives circumcision on the sabbath so the law of moses should not be broken are you angry with me because i made a man completely well on the sabbath do not judge according to appearance but judge with righteousness well we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well this is jesus saying where his authority comes from right jesus is saying here right he didn't come with his own authority he didn't come to do his own will but he came to do the will of his father who is in heaven and here jesus is doing everything perfect jesus is doing everything righteous jesus is doing these good and wonderful and great things and what is their response what does jesus ask i did this one thing and and you want to kill me and i said who's trying to kill you you got a demon man and he says whoa remember remember the guy at the pool of the theta yeah you guys don't might not want to kill jesus now because he's just fed 5 000 people he's just filled their bellies but remember the guy that he made completely well remember how he told him to pick up his mat and walk on the sabbath and yet you guys will circumcise on the sabbath no one no one's upset about that and jesus does a greater work what is this about jesus has come to do the will of his father to do it perfectly without any unrighteousness whatsoever and even as he does this wonderful and righteous work not everybody's going to love it not everybody's going to do it not everybody's going to believe him be what's the best verse i think the best person and here is i'm going to underline verse 16 jesus answered and said to them my doctrine is not mine but his who sent me right jesus is is the prophet the last prophet of god that's what the book of hebrews says he is the final prophet and i think also in my bible i'm going to underline as well uh if a man receives circumcision on the sabbath so the law of moses should not be broken are you angry with me because i made a man completely well on the sabbath i think those are two verses i get at the heart of what jesus is getting at here maybe you might disagree maybe you would underline verse 18 instead let me know if you would disagree and underline something else as the best verse see calling what are we called to do in response to this do we believe in jesus christ and do we accept the work that he has done do we know that he is making people well today that he can make us well that everything jesus has done and said and taught was of his father and it's perfectly righteous because in god there is no unrighteousness and even when we believe that even when we start looking like jesus that doesn't mean everything's going to go well for us either jesus came to do the will of his father and the world hated him are we ready for the world to hate us we're not greater than our master we're not greater than the greatest rabbi jesus himself if they hated him maybe we should be ready as well let's go ahead and pray now god we pray that we would stand strong in the lord we pray that we would trust in the perfect and righteous works of jesus christ we pray that you would work in our hearts and teach us to follow you in all of your ways we pray father that we would think only good and well amen to everything you have done please prepare us for the day of adversity let us stand strong in the face of affliction we pray that we would follow after you and that we would cling to you and that you would prepare us in jesus name amen well may god bless
