John 7:1–13

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this thursday morning november 30th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my children you and i we get together we have a cup of coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well we are at john chapter 7 verses let's see one through 13. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we read your word that you would bless us with it that we might believe in jesus christ we pray that you would apply these words to our hearts in jesus name amen okay here we go john chapter 7 the verse the first 13 verses after these things jesus walked in galilee for he did not want to walk in judea because the jews sought to kill him now the feast of the of tabernacles was at hand his brothers said to him depart from here and go into judea that your disciples may see the work that you are doing for no one does anything in secret while he himself seeks to be open to be known openly if you do these things show yourself to the world for even his brothers did not believe then jesus said to them my time has not yet come but your time is always ready the world cannot hate you but it hates me because i testify of it that its works are evil you go up to the feasts i am not yet going up to the feast for my time has not yet fully come when he had said these things to them he remained in galilee but when his brothers had gone up then he also went up to the feast not openly but as it were in secret then the jews saw him at the feast and said where is he and there was much complaining among the people concerning him some said he is good others said no on the contrary he deceives the people however no one spoke openly of him for fear of the jews now isn't this an incredible story here we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize to sin see what are we called to do in response to these words a what is this about jesus brothers don't believe him people don't believe jesus christ isn't that saying the same still today right i mean some people say in here that even his brothers right he's deceiving people right if you want to make yours if you want to make yourself known go let it be known to the whole world and she says like you guys don't even believe do we believe right well i'm okay jumping ahead to see here right but hey what is this about people don't believe jesus his own brothers don't believe him for a time now thankfully we know that later on james does believe his his brother his younger half brother james does believe but here uh what's the best verse for this uh well i think i'm going to underline verses seven and eight right there they want him to go down to the feast but jesus is saying uh that he's not my time has not yet come but your time is always ready the world cannot hate you but it hates me because i testify that its works are evil you go up to the feast i am not yet going to the feast for my time has not yet fully come that's what i'm going to underline in my bible as the best first to summarize what would you pick up your pencil and highlight in your bible as the best first to summarize this section feel free to let me know down in the comments see calling what are we called to do in response to this well i think there's a few things right i think first of all we need to just recognize that some people aren't going to believe in jesus christ do we hope that people are going to believe in jesus christ absolutely do we pray that people are going to believe in jesus christ absolutely does jesus know who's going to believe in him and who will not believe in him absolutely right jesus knows these things jesus knows his brothers aren't going to believe him jesus knows that his brothers don't believe him but does that give us reason to stop no no right we continue to proclaim the gospel we continue to believe in jesus christ ourselves but this is a blessing sometimes we're afraid to say these things and sometimes we're afraid to say that well some people aren't going to believe but the reality is some people aren't does that make us easy about it no no because we know what their eternal destination is but we shouldn't be surprised either jesus is going to tell his disciples in a few chapters about what it's going to be like when they testify about him and people don't believe him they're going to hate them and we shouldn't be surprised when people hate us and revile us because they also hated him reviled jesus they mocked him and ridiculed him and so don't be surprised i want you to take heart here right the messiah himself jesus the christ himself is is fully known to his brothers and they don't believe so if you tell others about jesus christ and they don't believe they have hearts of stone don't be surprised by this if jesus's own brothers do not believe don't be surprised when we tell our neighbors we tell our brothers and sisters and they might not believe i think there's there's something to be said there but we do need to ask our own hearts do we believe do we believe that jesus christ is the messiah sent from the father full of grace and truth let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we pray that we would go out with confidence even this day lord not surprised that people won't come to jesus christ because lord did not even jesus's own brothers knew him we pray father that you would press these truths deep down within our souls we pray father that we would have confidence when we go out that we don't need to worry or or we don't need to be disheartened that somehow you're not working for we know that you are working we pray that you would let us believe that we would hold on to you with dear life until our dying breath that we might know the christ and live with him forever in jesus name amen well may the lord bless you today and may you go about this day filled with the peace that comes from believing in jesus christ bye
