Scripture Passage
Rejection by Many Followers
60 Therefore many of His disciples, when they heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”
61 When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would betray Him. 65 And He said, “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.”
66 From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.
Confession by Peter
67 Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?”
68 But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve, and one of you is a devil?” 71 He spoke of Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, for it was he who would betray Him, being one of the twelve.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 6:60–71.

in his name we pray amen all right here we go john chapter 6 verses 63 71 therefore many of his disciples when they heard this said this is a hard saying who can understand it when jesus knew in himself that his disciples complained about this he said to them does this offend you what then if you should see the son of man ascend where he was before is it it is the spirit who gives life the flesh profits nothing the words that i speak to you are spirit and they are life but there are some of you who do not believe for jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe and who would betray him and he said therefore i have said to you that no one can come to me unless it has been given unless it has been granted to him by my father from the that time many disciples went back and walked with him no more then jesus said to the twelve do you also want to go away but simon peter answered lord to whom shall we go you have the words of eternal life also we have come to believe and know that you are the christ the son of the living god jesus answered them did i not choose you the twelve and one of you is a devil he spoke of judas iscariot the son of simon for it was he who would betray him being one of the twelve well we need to ask ourselves a what is this about be what is the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about first of all hey phyllis this is my grandma thanks for joining us tonight what's this passage about right jesus has just fed the 5 000 and they come now across the sea of tiberias a lake of galilee and they come to jesus and and he's told them that they need to eat a fish flesh and drink of his blood and that he's the bread who's come down from heaven he's a true heavenly manna and some of his disciples are like whoa this is hard jesus knows what they're thinking right jesus knew who was going to believe and who wasn't going to believe some people couldn't accept this and they actually left right they didn't want any of this of this dealing with jesus they just wanted their bellies filled and what does jesus do he turns and he looks at his disciples and he says well you leave also and peter responds back to him what is he saying lord to whom shall we go you have the words of eternal life also we have come to believe and know that you are the christ the son of the living god peter makes this amazing confession that is jesus who is the christ it's jesus who is the living the son of the living god it is jesus who has the words of life what is this about jesus knows who says who his true disciples are those who believe in him jesus knows his disciples how would you summarize this if you had to write something in the margin of your bible what would you write well we need to ask ourselves now what is the best verse out of all these different 11 verses what would we underline in the margin of our bible as the best verse to summarize this section well i think in my bible i'm going to go ahead and cheat i'm going to underline a few things right i'm going to underline what peter said there in verses 68 and 69. so i'm going to underline that verses 68 and 69 but i'm also i'm also going to underline verse 60 2 it is the spirit who gives life and the flesh prophets nothing the words that i speak to you are spirit and they are life and then 64. but there are some of you who do not believe for jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe and who would betray him isn't this amazing this is one of the things i find absolutely remarkable jesus knew jesus knows who is going to believe and who is not going to believe jesus has chosen this from before the foundations of the world this is what ephesians chapter 1 talks about it's not a surprise to jesus that judas is going to betray him it's not a surprise to him that even though thousands of people would come and and eat of this bread that he would give them that most of them would turn away and not follow him because he's teaching them that it's he who came down from heaven that he's the bread of life that he's not just there to fill their bellies but he's there to be their king do we believe in the hard things do we recognize that jesus came knowing that even judas would betray him think about how far away we are from the crucifix in this story and that jesus allowed judas to be there in his midst for all that time knowing that he was going to betray him what great love does jesus christ have that he would endure such suffering for us do we believe in him do we sup upon him do we feed upon jesus christ we believe in jesus christ do we cling to jesus christ as our only hope i pray that's the case for you i don't know maybe maybe you are one of those who jesus has known from the beginning if you are i pray that you might confess him with your mouth and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead and that you might enjoy being with jesus christ forever let's go ahead and pray tonight father i thank you so much for this wonderful lord's day that you've given us we thank you for a day filled with good news we thank you that jesus truly is the bread of life and he gives us words of eternal life that he is the christ the son of the living god lord we pray that we would believe in him trust upon him that we would rest in jesus christ alone for our salvation father forgive us of our sins and conform us more and more to the image of your son it is in jesus name we pray amen i pray that god bless you tonight and i'll see you tomorrow bright and early at 9 00 am as we keep going through the book of john bye
