Christ Heals on the Sabbath
And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath.

hey hey good morning welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday morning november 21st that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when they get spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at john chapter 5 verses 10 through 16 john chapter 5 verses 10 through 16. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for jesus christ our lord and our master we thank you for the love you have shown us in giving us not just your son but also your word and your spirit father we pray that as we read your word this morning that we would receive it by faith that it would be laid up in our hearts and that we would practice in our lives in jesus name amen oh here we go john chapter 5 beginning at verse 10. the jews therefore said to him he was cured remember this talking about the guy who was cured by the well the jews therefore said to him who was cured it is the sabbath it is not lawful for you to carry your bed he answered them he who said he who made me well said to me take up your bed and walk and then they said to him who is this man who said do you take up your bed and walk but the one who was healed did not know who it was for jesus had withdrawn a multitude being in that place afterward jesus found him in the temple and said to him see you have been made well sin no more lest the worst thing come upon you the man departed and told the jews that it was jesus who had made him well for this reason the jews persecuted jesus and sought to kill him because he had done these things on the sabbath well that's all we have for us this morning we need to ask ourselves hey what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well jesus heals that man who is down by the by the pool bethsaida and he heals him and and he tells him take up your mat and go walk and what does he do he's healed this paralyzed man is healed jesus by the power of his word is able to heal this man he gets up and he walks and right away it seems like the guy is right away just able to rejoice in god for being made whole he's he's been a long time since he's been sick and instead of rejoicing with this guy what do they do why are you carrying your man on the sabbath what are you doing he said well hold on the guy who made me well told me to take up your mat and go and i went and instead of people going oh my who is this that god has sent that could make someone whole instead who was he right they want to figure out who this guy is i don't know i mean the guy disappeared he there's a big crowd and he went away but later on jesus sees him at the temple and it's like he goes up to him he's like ah look see you have been made well sin no more less worse thing come upon you and he knows now he knows it's jesus and now he knows who it is and now he's excited to go tell the the religious leaders oh look it was jesus who healed me and instead of the people going to jesus and oh wow how did you heal this man you must be a the christ you must be the son of god instead now what does the text say they try to kill them they persecute them from that time on why because they love their traditions and don't see the power of god on display b what is the best verse to summarize this section well i think it's this is a tough one um what do you think what would you underline in your in your bible i'll let i'll put my pencil down i'll let you guys tell me today what are you going to highlight or what would you underline in your bible as the best verse for this section i i think i know what i would do i want to hear from you see calling what are we called to do in response to this do we rejoice when god works do we rejoice when god works in unexpected ways or do we love our traditions sometimes this happens in the church maybe people are coming to christ in unexpected ways maybe the lord is bringing people into your midst into your relationships that you're uncomfortable with but do you rejoice that jesus christ is saving people do you find people who are asking hard questions and and don't seem to just accept things but but are wrestling with stuff do we do we love them because jesus christ has made them well even though they might not look like us even though it might not be according to the traditions that we might have set in the ways of our own life but do we marvel that the harvest is ready and that the messiah has come and he's saving people and even when he saves them he tells us that we must not sin right this this is the amazing part too there's a second calling here see you have been made well sin no more sin no more we're not we're not saved so we can revel in our sin no we're saved by grace through faith as a mercy of god so that we we might put to death the sinful desires of our flesh are you actively doing that in your own life jesus didn't save us to be lawless jesus saved us that he might fulfill the law let's go ahead and pray this morning father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the grace of jesus christ of saving us and washing us and making us well lord we pray that we would follow after jesus with all of our hearts all of our minds and all of our strength lord we pray that you would give us your holy spirit that we might with the true hatred of our sin turn from it unto god that we might love you with all of our hearts and be conformed more and more to the image of jesus as we imitate him our lord and master it's in jesus name
