38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 40 Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. 41 Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.

20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”
3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 4 So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first. 5 And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed. 9 For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes.
Christ Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood outside by the tomb weeping, and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. 13 Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
14 Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that He had spoken these things to her.

19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
24 Now Thomas, called the Twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 The other disciples therefore said to him, “We have seen the Lord.”
So he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday evening this is oh what's the date today today is the 28th of december this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m supposed to be 9 a.m not so weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we are almost through all of the gospels we are at john chapter 19 the end of chapter 19 and we're gonna get most the way through chapter 20 tonight uh just a little bit of uh catch up for you guys we are uh out visiting some of some family this weekend so or this week so you're gonna get a little bit different backgrounds a little bit different times depending on when i'm available to be able to do this so hope you'll forgive me during this holiday season just life's a little bit different why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll get into god's word father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word and we pray now that as we read your word that you would apply these things to our hearts that we might believe in jesus name amen all right here we go john chapter 19 beginning at verse 38 after this joseph of arimathea being a disciple of jesus but secretly for fear of the jews asked pilate that he might take away the body of jesus and pilate gave him possession so he came and took the body of jesus and nicodemus who at first came to jesus by night also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes about a hundred pounds then they took the body of jesus and bound it in strips of linen with the spices as the customs of the jews is to bury now in the place where jesus was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid so they laid jesus there because of the jews preparation day for the tomb was nearby so let's go we're just going to break this up paragraph by paragraph what is this about joseph of arimathea and nicodemus get jesus's body and prepares it for burial and jesus is laid in this in this tomb nearby it's a rich man's tomb in which no one's ever been laid so what is this about i would say in the margin of my bible i would write uh joseph of arimathea and nicodemus prepared jesus body or yeah prepare his body for burial okay here we go chapter 20 this next part now the first day of the week mary magdalene went to the tomb early while it out of the tomb and we do not know where they have taken where they have laid him peter therefore went out and the other disciple and were going to the tomb so they both ran together and the other disciple outran peter and came to the tomb first and he stooping down and looking in saw the linen cloths lying there yet he did not go in then simon peter came following him and went into the tomb and he saw the linen cloth lying there and the handkerchief that had been around his head not lying with a lemon and claws but folded together in a place by itself then the other disciple who came to the tomb first went in also and he saw and believed for as yet they did not know the scripture that he must rise again from the dead then the disciples went away again to their own homes what is this about john and peter run to the run to the tomb and what do they find he's not there right mary magdalene runs and she gets peter peter runs interestingly uh just a little side note about this i can't ever i can't stop help from laughing you know uh john outruns peter and peter goes well who's ever gonna know it and you know there's a joke that john sitting there going everyone's going to know it john outruns peter to the tomb peter goes right in john holds back he goes in but they both see that he's not there they don't understand the scriptures yet that jesus had to raise again from the dead the book of romans tells us that he was raised for our justification that sin had no power of death over him what is this john and peter and mary magdalene find that jesus is no longer in the tomb but mary stood outside the tomb weeping and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the tomb and she saw two angels in white sitting one at the head and one and the other at the feet where the body of jesus was laying then they said to her woman why are you weeping she said to them because they have taken away my lord and i do not know where they have laid him now when she had said this she turned around and saw jesus standing there and did not know that it was jesus jesus said to her woman why are you weeping whom are you seeking she supposed him to be the gardener said to him sir if you have carried him away tell me where you have laid him and i will take and i will take him away jesus said to her mary do not and she turned to him and said rabboni which is to say teacher jesus said to her do not cling to me for i have not yet ascended to my father but go to my brethren and say to them i am ascending to my father and your father and to my god and your god mary magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the lord and that he had spoken these things to her what is this about jesus reveals himself to mary magdalene mary is weeping right where is my lord they've taken my lord and the angels asked her why are you weeping she turns around she sees this other guy and it's jesus she doesn't recognize him she's and jesus looks at her woman why are you weeping it's amazing isn't it all he has to say is her name in that tone and that intonation that that she would often hear that affectionate loving tone that he would say mary rebel my teacher she recognizes him what a beautiful passage let's let's wrap this up right then the same day evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the jews jesus came and stood in the midst and said to them peace be with you when he had said this he showed them his hands and his side then the disciples were glad when they saw the lord so jesus said to them again of peace to you as the father has sent me i also sinned you and when he had said this he breathed on them and said to them receive the spirit if you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven them if you retain the sins of any they are retained now tom is called the twin one of the twelve was not with them when jesus came the other disciples therefore said to him we have seen the lord so he said to them unless i see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and put my hand into his side i will not believe aft and after eight days his disciples were again inside and thomas with them jesus came the doors being shut and stood in the midst and said peace to you then he said to thomas reach your finger here and reach your hand here put it into my side do not be unbelieving but believing and thomas answered and said to him my lord and my god jesus said to him thomas because you have seen you have believed blesser those who have not seen and yet believe what is this last section about verses 19 through 29 jesus reveals himself to the disciples isn't it interesting that they don't all believe right away and that jesus displays his humanity still in his resurrected state the scars in his hands the piercing of his side the scars are still there he still bears their iniquity he still carries their sin it's exactly as isaiah 53 6 said for all we like sheep have turned away every one we have each gone our own way but the lord has laid upon him the iniquity of us all jesus is that lamb who is slain before the foundation of the world what are we called to do in response to these do we believe will we cry out like mary rabbon i teacher i have seen the lord will we cry out like thomas my lord and my god that is the calling for tonight that is a calling from this passage do you believe will you cry out to your god and cling to him alone let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we pray that you would bless us we thank you for your word we thank you for the risen savior jesus christ the master of our souls and the redeemer of our eternity in jesus name amen may the lord bless you and care for you today sorry for all
