John 19:17–37

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday morning december 26th this were every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at john chapter 19. if you can believe it we are almost done with the gospel of john and just as a quick update a number of you have commented and let me know what you wanted to do for 2021 and i think we're going to do the uh wisdom literature so job through the song of solomon now that's a big chunk and i'm still wrestling with how we might get through the book of job just because it's it's not really a book you want to analyze it was written as a as a big story and sometimes we miss the overarching reason why god gave us that story if we pick it apart um and so i'm still wrestling with how to do that but i'll give you an update in a couple of days well why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into john chapter 17 today let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the rich blessing it is to come to your word we pray now that as we read your word that you would take these truths that you would press them down upon our hearts that we might see what a great savior we have in jesus name amen okay why don't we go ahead and turn here onto the computer and look at what we have for us today so john chapter 19 beginning at verse 17 and right before we read if you haven't already hit that like button let facebook and youtube google know that this is something you would like like others to be able to see and that it would show you to you more often as well here we go john chapter 19 beginning at verse 17. and he bearing his cross went out to a place called the place of the skull which is called in hebrew golgotha where they crucified him and two others with him one on either side and jesus in the center then pilate who wrote a title and put it on the cross and the writing was jesus of nazareth king of the jews then many of the jews read this title for the place where jesus was crucified was near the city and it was written in hebrew greek and latin therefore the chief priests of the jews said to pilate do not write king of the jews but he said i am the king of the jews pilate answered what i have written i have written then the soldiers when they had crucified jesus took his garments and made four parts to each soldier apart and also the tunic now the tunic was without seam woven from the top in one piece they said therefore among them cells let us not tear it but let us cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scriptures might be fulfilled which says they divided my garments among them in my clothing they cast lots therefore the soldiers did these things now they're stood by the foot of the cross of jesus his mother and his mother's sister mary the wife of clopaz and mary magdalene when jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing by he said to his mother woman behold your son then he said to the disciple behold your mother and from that hour that disciple took her to his own home after this jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished that the scripture might be fulfilled he said i thirst now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there and they filled a sponge with sour wine put it on hyssop and put it to his mouth so when jesus had received the sour wine he said it is finished and bowing his head he gave up his spirit therefore because it was the day of preparation that the body should not remain on the cross on the sabbath for the sabbath was a high day the jews asked pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away and then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and on the other who was crucified with him but when they came to jesus and saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water came out and he who has seen has testified in his testimony as true and he knows that he is telling the truth so that you may believe for these things were done that the scripture should be fulfilled not one of his bones shall be broken and again another scripture says they shall look on him whom they pierced well we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do in response to these words a what is this about jesus has died jesus offers himself up as a living sacrifice at jesus the righteous one dies for sinners what is this about the king has paid the price we can pull this apart and look at interesting things we see that above jesus's head written in the languages of the day greek hebrew and latin three times is right is written king of the jews now not everybody likes us right the jews want to say no no say that he said he was king of the jews and i have written what i've written like to come on go away right jesus is the king jesus is the great king that psalm 2 promised but he's also this loving king he's the one that even as he's dying looks upon his mother and looks to the disciple john whom he loved and he and he says to him or he says to her woman behold your son and he looks at john he says behold your mother it says jesus even as he is about to die looks at his mother with honor and compassion and cares about her physical needs he knows that now he her oldest son is is going to die and she's going to have someone there to care for him and john obeys right it says that he takes her into her his own household and then when jesus sees that it's finished they bring him that wine but but jesus gives up his spirit verse 30 and they come and and they're going to break his legs so that he might die even more quickly but when they break the the legs of the person on one side of jesus and then they go and they break the legs of the other person's legs on the other side of jesus they come to him and he's already dead and just to make sure he's dead they take the tip of the spear and they thrust it into his side right this is meant to produce screaming in the person if they weren't actually dead and immediately water and blood come out indeed the is done the scriptures have been fulfilled what is this about the king has finished his work as it was said in the scriptures but we need to ask ourselves what are we called to do in response to these words what does john say here verse 35 that he who has seen has testified and his testimony is true and he knows that he is telling the truth that you may believe for these things were done that the scriptures should be fulfilled not one of his bones shall be broken do you see these things were written that you might believe these things were given to us that we might have faith that we might look upon jesus christ as he was on that cross and believe that all of our sins have been forgiven that the god of the universe displayed his own love for us in that while we were yet sinners christ died for you and for me that we were those who would have shouted out crucify him crucify him but he has taken our place he was a lamb who was slain tempted in every way as we are yet without sin and upon that cross he redeemed you god bought you not with silver or with gold well but with the plush but with the precious blood of jesus christ his only begotten son that we might have eternal life that we might be with him forever do you believe that's what this passage is calling you to today do you believe do me a favor if you do just type down in the comment bar i believe
