John 20:26–31

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions it is let's see what is today man it's always that time between uh christmas and new year's you know when you don't know what it is it's the 29th i don't even know what day of the week it is i think maybe it's tuesday yeah it's tuesday morning welcome to coffee and devotions here at my in-laws house and they have a great mug upstairs jesus and coffee i love it i took their mug because i really liked it i'll give it back to them when i'm done with my coffee but we're going to be in john chapter 20 we're going to go from chapter 26 to the end of the chapter why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we pray that you would bless us now as we read your word father we pray that your holy spirit would work in our hearts that we might have eyes to see you see ears to hear hearts that would receive and believe in your word in jesus name we pray amen all right here we go john chapter 20. can you guys believe it only a couple more days when we're going to be done with all the gospels can't wait to go through the wisdom literature with you here we go john chapter 20 beginning at verse 26 and after eight days his disciples were again inside and thomas with them jesus came the doors being shut and stood in the midst and said peace to you then he said to thomas reach your finger here and look at my hands reach your hand here and put it into my side do not be unbelieving but believing and thomas answered and said to him my lord and my god jesus said to him thomas because you have seen me you have believed blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed and truly jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book but these are written that you may believe in jesus christ the son of god and that believing you may have life in his name what is this about a what is this about well this is about doubting thomas believing this is about the risen lord and savior jesus christ appearing to thomas and tom is crying out he says my lord my god he cries out in his heart that this is his savior this is his cries this is messiah and what is jesus says blessed are you are right you you believe because you see blessed are those who do not see and yet believe and then right after this what does it say look at these words this is written for you this is written for me this this is incredible here blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe and truly jesus had many other signs in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book but these are written that you may believe that jesus is the christ the son of god and that believing you may have life in his name what is this about what is this entire book of the gospel of john but about that you might believe that jesus is the christ the son of the living god right that we might be those who believe in the name of the son of god and that we might be saved right what does jesus tell us in the book of john right for those of us who believe in his name we shall not come into judgment for we have passed from death into life it's this beautiful reality that if we believe in jesus christ if you believe in jesus christ but there is life everlasting in him the best verse i think in my bible i'm gonna go ahead and grab my pencil here and i'm gonna underline two different things i know i'm cheating but that's okay i'm going to underline blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed and then i'm also going to underline verse 30 but these were written that you may believe that jesus is the christ the son of the god and that believing you may have life in his name calling see calling what are you called to do what am i called to do well you might find yourself at times like thomas right it's it's we eagerly expect we hope we anticipate with all of our souls the things that jesus has told us to be true that is faith we don't see it but we believe it we have the visible signs and seals and the sacraments right we have baptism in the lord's supper that that give us tangible things that we could hold on to and cling on to that these things are true but the reality is we see christ by faith we trust in him though we have not seen him do you believe has he given you his holy spirit and has he drawn you to himself that you might believe and have eternal life this is the beauty of what the gospels are about to display to us the christ the son of the living god so what are we called to do we're called to have faith to receive jesus christ by faith to cling to him alone as our only hope i pray that that's the case for you not just at the end of this year 2020 but for all eternity because the things that we do not see now one day we will see in all their majesty one day we will see jesus christ upon that throne one day we will join the myriads of angels who worship him perfectly and eternally let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for jesus christ we thank you for the hope that we have in him we thank you for his finished work upon that cross and that he now sits at your right hand we thank you that you have borne testimony of him and that we believe it father please help our disbelief please let us cling more and more to the truths we find in your word because they all teach us about your son and of your love for us in jesus name amen well may you go today in the joy and peace of jesus christ i'll talk to you tomorrow bye
