John 14:8–21

[Music] [Music] so hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this third our wednesday morning december 16th that's where every weekday morning at 9 a.m on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well it is not nine o'clock in the morning it is 2 53 in the afternoon but i was having breakfast with some friends this morning and so having omelets and devotions doesn't work so well but why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we read your word that your holy spirit would apply these things to our hearts that we might hear them understand them and believe them and be comforted by you in jesus name we pray amen well why don't we go ahead and jump into our text today we're at john chapter 14 verses 8 through 21 john chapter 14 verses 8 through 21. before we jump in there if this is something helpful to you feel free to hit the like button or subscribe share with a friend let's go ahead and jump in philip said to him lord show us the father and it was sufficient and it is sufficient for us jesus said to him have i been with you so long and yet you have not known me philip who he who sent me sorry he who has seen me has seen the father so how can you say show us the father do you not believe that i am in the father and that the father in me the words that i speak to you i do not speak on my own authority but the father who dwells in me does the works believe me that i am in the father and the father in me or else believe in me for the sake of the works themselves most assuredly i say to you he who believes in me the works that i do he will do also and greater works than these he will do because i go to my father and whatever you ask in my name that i will do that my father may be glorified in the son if you ask anything in my name i will do it if you love me keep my commandments and i will pray the father and he will give you another helper that he may abide with you forever the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him but you know him for he dwells with you and will be in you i will not leave you orphans i will come to you a little while longer and the world sees me no more but you will see me because i live you will live also at that day you will know that i am in my father and you in me and i in you he who has my commandments and keeps them it is he who loves me and he who loves me will be loved by my father and i will love him and manifest myself to him well we need to ask ourselves what is this a about b what is the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about remember jesus has just been telling them i'm going to go away and where i go you cannot come and peter's like whoa whoa whoa what do you mean you're going away and and i'll follow you to death and no you won't right jesus says no you're going to deny me before the rooster crows not just deny me once twice but three times you'll deny me and here jesus has said he's going to go to the father and tom there philip philip says lord show us the father and it is sufficient for us let's show us the father and what is jesus's response how long have i been with you if you've seen me you have seen the father and in this section we have a beautiful picture of the unity between the father the son and the spirit that these three are one but specifically here in this passage jesus shows that intimate union he has with the father that the father is in him and he is as in the father and and they are one jesus and the father are echad they are him they are one they are totally united in their person in being as well as united in their will it's not like jesus is saying that they are two different gods no they are one god the father is in him and he is in the father he does the will of the father and the father loves him now this is a great mystery of the christian faith but here it's coming straight from the lips of jesus himself but what does he say in verses 12 through 13 most assuredly i say to you he who believes in me the works that i do he will also do in greater works than these he will do because i go to my father indeed there would be many other miracles that would happen there's so many promises here in this passage that jesus is not going to leave us alone as orphans that jesus did not go to the grave and then up into heaven sitting down at the right hand of god to be away from us forever no he would send his holy spirit to us and by his holy spirit he would change the entire world he would dramatically alter the course of history forever it was not that jesus was going to leave to leave them alone but he was going to leave because it was better for them for him to go because by him going they would have the spirit and if we show that we have the spirit because his spirit urges us on to keep his commandments loving one another serving one another we can pray to him with confidence isn't that beautiful what he says at the end here that he who has my commandments and keeps them it is he who loves me and he who loves me will be loved by my father and i will manifest myself i will love him and manifest myself to him do you want to see the father believe in the son you want jesus to hear your prayers love him he's the way do his works and you'll be blessed see this is the beautiful reality of what's going on here is that jesus is telling us that if we want fulfillment in this life i know we're just skipping right over b and you're getting c that's okay what we learn here in this passage is that we believe in jesus christ and when we believe in jesus christ we have union with with god himself that in our union with jesus christ we also have connection to the triune person we have access to the father and that's where jesus went right to go and to make make ready the rooms for us for in his father's house there are many rooms if it were not so he would have told us that and he's there in heaven and he's prepared those rooms do you believe and will you follow after him will you love like he loved will you show that you keep his commandments by serving why don't we go ahead and pray this afternoon lord we thank you so much for this day and we pray that you would bless us and care for us now father please watch over us we pray that you would indeed let us walk in your love and be comforted by your spirit in jesus name we pray amen well may the lord bless you
