Scripture Passage
Christ Announces His Departure
31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Christ Foretells Peter’s Denial
Matt. 26:34, 35; Mark 14:30, 31; Luke 22:33, 34
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?”
Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.”
37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.”
38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
Christ Comforts His Disciples
14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”
Christ Answers Thomas
5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 13:31–14:7.

little bit of ketchup we are at john chapter 13 verses 31 down through chapter 14 verse 7. it's not terrible today why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we get into your word that you would bless us and care for us that you would work in our hearts that we would understand these things that we would have a peace that surpasses all understanding as we rest in jesus christ it's in his name we pray amen when i say it's not terrible none of the bible is terrible i mean it's not terribly long why don't we go ahead and jump in today john chapter 13 beginning at verse 31 so when he had gone out jesus sat said now the son of man is glorified and god is glorified in him if god is glorified in him god will also glorify him in himself and glorify him immediately little children i shall be with you a little while longer you seek me and as i said to the jews where i am going you cannot come so now i say to you a new commandment i give to you that you love one another as i have loved you that you also love one another by this all will know that you are my disciples if you love one another simon peter said to him lord where are you going jesus answered him where i am going you cannot follow me but you shall follow me afterward peter said to him lord why can we not follow you now i will lay down my life for your sake jesus answered him will you lay down your life for my sake most assuredly i say to you the roosters shall not crow till you have denied me three times then chapter 14 the first seven verses let not your heart be troubled you believe in god believe in me also in my father's house are many mansions if it were not so i would have told you i go to prepare a place for you and if i go to prepare a place for you i will come again and receive you to myself that where i am there you may be also and where i go you know and the way you know thomas said to him lord we don't know where you are going and how can we know the way jesus said to him i am the way and the truth and the life no one comes to the father except by or through me if you had known me you would also have known my father also and from now on i say and from now on you know him and have seen him well what a beautiful passage we have for us this morning we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this passage and see what are we called to do in response to these words so first a what is this about well jesus tells them that he's he's leaving jesus is trying to tell them that he is going to be dead buried raised again and go into heaven they don't know this obviously we have the end of the story but in their lived situation as a wrestling with this jesus is saying he is going to be glorified right he is going to be exalted he is going to be made absolutely wonderful and he goes on after that though it's it's amazing what he says john the apostle picks us up in his book first john as he fleshes out what jesus meant by this but jesus says in verse 34 a new commandment i give to you that you love one another as i have loved you that you also love one another isn't that what jesus had just done as he had washed his disciples feet as he had just cared for them in that extremely humble way well in that next part you know christ tells simon peter that he's going to reject him not once not twice but three times in the margin of my bible i would say jesus tells peter that he's going to deny him the next seven verses are are interesting they keep tying together this idea that flows between 13 and 14 where jesus saying he's leaving and where he goes they cannot follow but they'll go there with him and what does he mean by this and and jesus tells right after he told peter right after he told him he was going to deny him that he actually wouldn't lay down his life for him what does he say do not let your hearts be troubled jesus was going to go away jesus was going to depart he was going to be put into the grave and none of them would follow him there but where he was ultimately going up into heaven they would follow him there he says don't let your hearts be troubled jesus is preparing that place for them jesus is preparing a home for them in his father's house there are many rooms if it weren't the case he would have told them that but thomas doesn't get this right the first part a about five through seven he says where are you going we don't know how we're supposed to get there and jesus says one of the most memorable things i am the way the truth and the love and the life no one comes to the father but through me see jesus is saying you want to get to the father you want to see the father you get through me you want to go and be in the presence of god almighty himself you go through me you believe in me you trust in me you love me you serve others like i served you because you love me what's the best verse for this well recently i've preached two funeral sermons on john 14 1-4 and i think that's it's a wonderful passage maybe you would underline that as the best verse to summarize this section it in my bible though i'm actually going to underline those three verses there 15 or five six and seven i think that's the heart of what's getting on here what are we called to do in response to this what are you called to do in your life as you respond to these words first do you love jesus christ do you trust in him do you desire to be with god the father almighty forever if so you only get there through faith in jesus christ do you desire to seek after god maybe you need to love others is there an opportunity for service in your life is there a way in which you can be serving others around you to demonstrate that love of jesus these might not be instagramable ways to serve these might not be things that you want to let your right hand know what your left hand is doing type of ways might not be big public ways but are there ways in your life that you can be serving are there ways that you can be showing the love of jesus christ let me know down in the comments or shoot me a message what is a way that you would like to be serving as christ served and lastly callings hope do you have hope that if you believe in jesus christ that there is a place for you with the father we're going to see that jesus has more to teach on this tomorrow so i'm going to hold off a little bit but if you've gone this far i thank you for stick sticking with
