Christ Washes the Disciples’ Feet
13 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, 4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!”
Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. 16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’ 19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He. 20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

21 When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me.” 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
25 Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it.” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday morning this where every weekday morning at 9 am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my children you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well i have been off the last couple days not off not working but just actually busy with work busy with people and uh just phone dying and logistics not working haven't been able to jump on so anyways all that to say have you ever done that before where it just seems like you've wanted to get the scriptures you wanted to do your devotions and for some reason or another it's just a bunch of excuses and you didn't do it well you either have two choices well i guess you have three the first is to just give up and stop doing your reading plan that's not a good option the second is to just jump back in and forget the days that you didn't read and and keep going or you can try to adjust your reading plan and that's what we're going to do here uh thankfully it's not too long we'll do chapter 13 1 through 30 today and then tomorrow we'll do 13 21 or 31 through 14 7. so not too bad why don't we go ahead and have some coffee we'll pray and we'll get into god's word lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we read your word you would teach us you would guide us that we might know who you are believe in you with all of our hearts in jesus name amen well also uh just as a little preview tomorrow we're going to have something special a little bit of announcement something i've been working hard on for 2020 something that has been a lot of labor to get together so stick around tomorrow you'll want to tune in at and it was night we have the passage before us what is this about well a what is this about jesus is there at this last this last feast this last supper with his disciples and as he is there and as he is celebrating with them he serves them he cleanses them he rids himself of his garments he takes off his outer clothes and he puts on a linen garment and he he washes his servant's feet he gives this pattern that if he cleanses them that they are cleansed completely simon doesn't get this right he's are you going to baptize are you going to wash me and jesus says no no hold on you don't get it right if i don't wash you you're not going to be clean at all i said okay then wash my hands and my feet in my head right watch i want to be completely clean isn't this a beautiful picture that jesus has both of his atoning work as well as our service to one another that jesus came not to be served but to serve and that it is jesus who is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us of all of our unrighteousness it is that that's what this is getting at here and it's also getting at jesus knowing exactly who was going to betray him the disciples didn't understand it but jesus knows judas is going to betray him it starts with that at the beginning of the chapter and the last part we read was jesus telling him what you're going to do do go quickly what's the best verse for this section well i think in my bible i'm going to underline let me grab my pencil here sorry i'm going to underline verse 8 if i do not wash you you have no part in me but you might underline something else maybe you would underline verse 12 or 13 maybe even 14 15 and 16. i don't know let me know down in the comments there's so many good verses to summarize that section i would also say i'm going to underline verse 20 in my bible verse 20 most assuredly i say to you that he who receives whoever i sin receives me and he who receives me receives him who sent me will lastly seek calling what are we called to do in response to this do we believe in jesus christ are we washed in his blood do we serve one another as he has served us so have you confessed your sins that's what first john tells us if we confess our sins jesus or he is righteous and faithful to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us of all of our unrighteousness do you believe that jesus can actually do that for you and to you will you confess your sin do you serve others as jesus washed the feet of his disciples as he served them in that humble and honestly humiliating way do you serve those around you are you one who is a servant to those who are in need does that look like caring for a widow near you does that look like visiting those who are in the nursing home maybe even though you can only see them from the window or give them a phone call does that look like going and helping someone move in does it look like making meals for someone who's come down with a coronavirus what is your word we pray now that you might care for us that you would bless us we pray that you would apply these words to our hearts that we would fix our eyes upon jesus christ that we would be cleansed
