1 Chronicles 2:1-17

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at 1 Chronicles chapter 2. We're going to start looking at the genealogy of Judah. So this is an interesting section of 2 Chronicles. We have a lot of genealogies to start off, but it's for the purpose. And so we'll kind of get our way up to speed with where we were when we finished up 1 Samuel.
So let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Father, we thank you so much for this day. We thank you that you are a God of historical fact and truth. You are a wonderful covenant-keeping God, merciful and gracious and kind. Lord, we pray that as we read your Word, you would help us to read and understand that we might believe and live. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Here we go. 1 Chronicles chapter 2. We'll read the first 17 verses.
These were the sons of Israel, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. The sons of Judah were Ur, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by the daughters of Shua, the Canaanites. Ur, the firstborn of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so he killed them. And Tamar, his daughter-in-law, bore him Perez and Zerah. All the sons of Judah were five.
The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. The sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalakul and Dara, five of them in all. The son of Kamri was Achar, the Troubler of Israel, who transgressed in the accursed thing. The son of Ethan was Azariah. Also the sons of Hezron, who were born to him, were Jeremel, Ram, and Chilibai.
Ram begot Amminadab, and Amminadab begot Nahashon, leader of the children of Judah. Nahashon begot Salma, and Salma begot Boaz. Boaz begot Obed, and Obed begot Jesse. Jesse begot Eliab, his firstborn, Ambinadab the second, Shimea the third, Nathaniel the fourth, Radai the fifth, Ozem the sixth, and David the seventh. Now their sisters were Zariah and Abigail and the sons of Zariah were Abishai, Joab, and Asher. Three. Abigail bore Amasa the father and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmaelite.
Well, we need to ask ourselves, A. What's this about? B. What's the best verse to summarize this? And C. What do we call it to do?
So it starts off with the sons of Israel. So that was verse 1 and 2. So you got those. And then it specifically talks about the tribe of Judah, all the way from Judah down to David. It's just going through here and it's giving us highlights, little bits and parts. And so as we read through Genesis and we went through that a few years ago and we went through Judges and we went through Ruth recently, we see these names and these stories become familiar to us.
This is God's covenant working through sinful people in a sinful world. And yet God is still faithful. There are times in which he's outraged by his moral failings of people and there's judgment on them. And yet God is still bringing about this covenant of grace.
Eventually who's this seed going to be of the woman who will crush the head of the serpent? How is God going to be faithful to Abraham and the covenants he made with him? Beginning at Genesis chapter 12. And so We get all the way from Judah himself. He has five boys. A little bit about the story of those boys. You can go back in Genesis, read those. You get Perez and his sons there. You get Carmi and his sons. You get Ethnon and then you also get the sons of Hezron. You go through those and then you finally get from Boaz to Obed to Jesse to David.
David's the youngest of seven sons and and then you find out he's also Jesse had some girls too and so you find out David's sisters and so this is got a point to it right there's there's a reason why it ends with David right because this is the chronicles the chronicles of both God's covenant faithfulness but also tied into that is the line of the kings These are the chronicles of the kings of Judah and Israel. So it's going to be both. It's going to be a split kingdom after Solomon, but this is what's happening. So this is David's genealogy, we might be able to say, or the beginning of the genealogy of the dynasty from Judah. So that's what this is about.
What's the best verse to summarize this? Well, in my Bible, I would underline verse 15, Ozen the sixth, then David the seventh. I would also probably underline verse 1 and 2, right? This is going to set the theme and the scene for us all the way until we get through, I think it was like chapter 8 or 9, as we go through the genealogy of all the different tribes. So that's what this is about, best verse. So let's see, what are we called to do?
Well, this is the common theme as we go through the Chronicles, as we go through the historical books, seeing God's faithfulness to His covenant, to His promises, though people are sinful. God keeping His covenant, His grace, His truth from generation to generation even though people aren't perfect. And yet someday, even through this royal line, he would bring about the savior of the world, the root of the stump of Jesse, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the true David, the one who would truly be after God's own heart and would never stumble nor falter, the perfect one-eyed king, Jesus himself. That's our hope as we look through all of this constantly is looking for Jesus. And here this gives us hope. Judah didn't have any perfect kids. All five of his sons were fallen, depraved, sinful. All the way down to David. But then we get to Jesus. And he has done all things well. Let's hope in Him and trust in Him. Let's pray.
Father, we thank You for this day, and we thank You for Your Word. We thank You, Father, for the hope that we have of being able to be reconciled to You through the blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ. And Father, we pray that we would love You and follow after You. We thank You that You are a covenant-keeping, wonderful God. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Well, may the Lord bless you.
