21 Now afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old; and she bore him Segub. 22 Segub begot Jair, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. 23 (Geshur and Syria took from them the towns of Jair, with Kenath and its towns—sixty towns.) A — About
What Is This Passage About?
The genealogy follows Hezron's descendants with special attention to Caleb, preserving an honest record of flawed families while connecting important towns and scribal families to Judah's history. Through these generations, God's covenant faithfulness preserves a remnant and advances the line toward David and Christ.
B — Best Verse
Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?
1 Chronicles 2:51
Salma the father of Bethlehem.
Bryan explicitly says verse 51 is underlined. Bethlehem links Caleb's genealogy to David and ultimately to the birthplace of Jesus, making it especially significant in the redemptive line.
C — Called or Christ
C — Christ Connection
Find identity not in ancestry or birthright but in God's adoption and new birth. Rest in Christ, through whom God worked his saving story across generations and makes sinful people his children.

Hey, hey, good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This morning we are at 1 Chronicles chapter 2. We'll begin at verse 18 and we'll go through the genealogy of Caleb. So do you remember who Caleb was? He was the second spy. Good, exactly.
So let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for this day. Thank you for the blessing and the ability to spend time together and read your word. We pray that you would please help us to understand it and that it would be a blessing to us to grow us in our love for you in Jesus's name. Amen. All right, here we go. Second Chronicles, chapter two, beginning at verse 18. If you read a paragraph, and it's a bunch of names, so don't get worried if you can't pronounce it or you mess up the pronunciation. Just keep going. Caleb, the son of Hezron, had children by Azubah, his wife, and by Jereoth, and by Jereoth. Now, these were her sons, Jashar, Shobab, and Ardan.
When Azubah died, Caleb took Ephrath as his wife, who bore him Haw, and Haw begot Ori, and Ori begot Bezalel. Now afterward, Hezron went in to the daughter of Mechir, the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty years old, and she bore him Segub. Segub begot Jer, who had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. Jeshur and Syria took from them the towns of Jer and Kenath as its towns, sixty towns. All these belonged to the sons of Mehir, the father of Gilead. After Hezron died in Caleb Ephrathah, Hezron's wife Abijah bore him Ashur, the father of Tekoa.
The sons of Jeremiel, the firstborn of Hezron, were Ram, the firstborn, and Bunah, Olan, Ozem, and Ahijah. Jaramil had another wife whose name was Atara. She was the mother of Onam, the son of Ram, the firstborn of Jaramil, Ramaz, Jameen, and Ekar. The sons of Onam were Shemmai and Jadah, the sons of Shemmai, were Nadab and Abishur. And the name of the wife of Abishur was Abahel, and she bore him Achman and Molid. The sons of Nadab were Seled and Apaym. Seled died without children. The son of Apayim was Ishi, the son of Ishi was Sheshan, and Sheshan's son was Ahlai.
The sons of Jada, the brother of Shammai, were Jethair, Jonathan. Jethair died without children. The sons of Jonathan were Peleth and Zaza. These were the sons of Jeremel. Now Sheshen had no sons, only daughters, and Sheshen had an Egyptian servant whose name was Jahah. Sheshen gave his daughter to Jahah, his servant, as wife.
And she bore him Atai. Atai begot Nathan. Nathan begot Zabad. Zabad begot Iflal. And Iflal begot Ubed. Ubed begot Jehu. And Jehu begot Azariah. Azariah begot. Helez and Helez begot. Elissa begot. Sismai and Sismai begot. Shalom begot. Jechmiah and Jechmiah begot. Elishama.
The descendants of Caleb, the brother of Jehemiel, were Mesha, his firstborn, who is the father of Ziph, and the son of Maresha, the father of Hebron. The sons of Hebron were Korah, Tapuah, Rekem, and Shema. Shema begot Raham the father of Jokoram and Rekem begot Shemai. The sons of Shemai was Moan and Moan was the father of Bethzer. Eliph Caleb's concubine bore Haran, Moza and Gezez and Haran begot Gezez. And the sons of Jedi were Regem, Jotam, Geshan, Pelet, Efha, and Sha'af. Mecha, Caleb's concubine, bore Sheber and Tirchanah. She also bore Sa'af, the father of Madmanah, Sheva, the father of Machbenah, and the father of Gibeah. And the daughter of Caleb was Achsa. These were the descendants of Caleb, the sons of her. The firstborn of Ephrathah were Shobal, the son of Kirjath-Jerim, Salma, the father of Bethlehem, and Herif, the father of Beth-Gadir, and Shobal, the father of... what?
You just keep going. Oh, sorry. Where was this? Where were we? 52. And Shabal, the father of Kirjath, Jorim, had descendants, Haroet, and half of the families of Menuhath. The families of Kirjath, Jorim, were Etherites, the Poothites, the Shumathites, and the Mishrites. From these came the Xithites and the Eshtolites. The sons of Shalma were Bethlehem, the Netaphathites, Atroth, Beth-Joab, half of the Manahithites, and the Zorites. And the families of the scribes who dwelt at Jabez were the Jorathites, Okay.
That was a lot of names, man. We need to ask ourselves, A, what's this? About. B, what's the? Best for us is always. And C, what are we? We're called to yawn. Called to do. All right. So, long passage. Why do you think I had us read all the way from 18 to the end of the chapter? Because they're all connected. How are they all connected? by somebody, somebody, something. Alright, yeah.
So, if you notice, Caleb the son of Hezron, so the first part in 18 is the sons of Hezron all the way down to verse 41 and then 42, the main son of Hezron that's really kind of the focus of interest in this is Caleb. and then who are the descendants of Caleb, right?
And we find out some interesting things as we go, right? We find out there's still similar things to what Abraham and Sarai did, right? With Sarah giving Abraham her concubine and people having offspring that way, right? That's not a normal or godly way that this is supposed to happen, but there's a historical record, right? It doesn't whitewash history. It just says what it is. We also find out that there are people who have towns named after, and these towns end up becoming very important, right?
So, the best verse in my Bible, I have underlined 51. Salma the father of Bethlehem. Bethlehem is this house of bread. If it's the same house of bread, which we know Caleb actually inherited part of southern Judah, that's where David is from. That's where Jesus was born, so it ends up having a very special place.
Also, I have noted out at the very bottom here that the sons of Caleb end up becoming scribes. So, there's a few things this is about, but kind of this line of Caleb is really important coming in the histories. So, how did this kind of godly remnant stay intact? God's covenant faithfulness generation to generation, but how would you summarize it in your own words? Probably very similar. I know, but I want to hear it in your words. The lineage of Caleb. Okay, so the lineage of Caleb. All right, what would you underline in your Bible as the best verse to summarize it? Oh boy, I'm gonna go from probably verse 18 all the way to like 55. You can't just underline the whole thing, man. You couldn't even pronounce half the names with me. Nope. Neither could I, but that's fine. I think that it's hard to just get one boss. One boss doesn't really say much besides some names.
I mean, I guess somebody could underline verse 42, right? The descendants of Caleb, the brother of Jeremiah, right? And then it could go on from there. Something like that. All right. Well, let's go ahead and talk about seed calling. What are you called to do? How does this point you to the covenant of grace or Jesus Christ? We should trace our lineage all the way back up to Adam. Okay.
Well, I hate to tell you, we can't really get past about 1860s. at least on my paternal grandfather's side. We're stuck in Hungary somewhere. This is trying to just show us that there was the two spies that went into the land, Caleb and Jonathan. And we hear a lot about Jonathan, but not as much about Caleb. And yet, it's Caleb that...
You mean Joshua? Yeah, that's right. I was thinking Jonathan. We hear a lot, it's like Joshua's the next leader. We don't hear as much about Caleb, and yet it's Caleb who the lineage of David comes from. You just said Bethlehem. Yeah, I'm not sure that that's, so Bethlehem is where the town is, but I'm not sure where the crossover, the sons of Hezron were, so David was earlier in chapter 2 verse 9. No, you're right, there's crossover, right? So also the sons of Hezron were born to him where Jeremiel, Ram, and Yeah, you're right, dude. Those names are crossovers here.
Okay. Yeah, because we read about Ram in this section and we ran about. So, yeah. I just find that interesting how, like, Sometimes God, lots of times, tons of times in the Bible, somebody's like, well, this person didn't get as much, or they didn't do it, but lots of times, if you just keep going forward, you'll notice, oh, the Levites didn't get land, but they got to serve God.
The, I'm trying, I'm blanking here. Trying to remember. I can't remember his name. Went to Egypt. Joseph? Joseph. Got, like, he's the main point of that story, but yet his brothers are the one that becomes the nations. Yeah, it's going to be, yeah, his brothers become the nations, but it's going to be Judah who Abraham blesses to say he's going to have the scepter.
Yeah, right, so this is specifically tying us to Christ. I had not made that connection before. I just knew that Bethlehem was from that tribe, but I didn't know, like I didn't think about it actually being tied directly to Jesus' lineage. All right, interestingly in the book of Galatians, it talks about endless genealogies and they're kind of pointless because some people use these endless genealogies to prove how Jewish they really are and Paul's point is it's never about your birthright. It's about being adopted, about being given a new heart, and God making you His child, that you get to rest in Him, find your identity in Him, because He's loved you. So, there's a neat heritage here, and there's a story of God bringing about our Lord, and yet, I sit in here and wonder how many of these people, kind of know the stories of Israelite history, how many of these people had Jewish blood and yet were not truly part of Israel.
So, I mean, one of the people listed here was Korah. It's the same Korah. Korah's rebellion, he was swallowed up and killed, right? Yeah, trusting in the Lord. Ready to pray? Yep. Okay. You want to pray or you want me to? You pray. Okay. God, we thank you so much that you truly are a God of history. You knew each and every one of these names and you worked your story of salvation, your redemptive grasp on your people through even men like Caleb, though he has flaws in and of himself. Lord, we thank you that you worked in history and you are working in history, even through sinful people like us.
Father, we pray that we would please follow after you and love you. Lord, we thank you for adopting us as your children. We pray that we might rest in you. We thank you that you have made us your children. And we pray that you would please help us to walk as your children. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. May God bless you as you walk in the joy and peace that comes from being in Jesus Christ. We'll see you next time. Bye. Bye.
