Father, we thank you so much for the opportunity you've given us to spend time together. We thank you for your word. We pray that you please help us as we read it to understand it and to treasure it up in our hearts and teach us how to live it. Lord, give us hope. Give us life in Jesus' name. Amen. Here we go. First Chronicles chapter 1 beginning at verse 28. Go ahead.
28. 28, yep.
The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael. These are their genealogies. The firstborn of Ishmael was Nebojoth, then Kedar, Adbel, Mibsham, Mishma, Duma, Massa, Hadad, Tima, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedma. These were the sons of Ishmael. By the way, Ishmael is the son he had with Hagar, Sarah's concubine, or Sarah's handmaid. Now the sons born to Keturah, Abraham's concubine, were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Yishbak, Shun, Chua, the son of Jokshan, or Jeba, Dadan, the sons of Midian, or Effa, Effa, Hanakh, Abida, and Elda, all these were the children of Keturah. Interesting, so he has children with, we often think of Sarah and Hagar, but he also had a concubine. So Abraham is a guy who's polygamous and he has multiple interactions with women.
Just by the way, just because it says that that's what it is doesn't mean that that's what we should do. So when we get to see calling, don't tell me that you should marry a woman who will give you her slave and then get a concubine also so you can love on three women. Because it don't work out well in the story. No. Okay.
The family of Isaac. Abraham begot Isaac, the sons of Isaac were Esau and Israel." Interesting, Israel not Jacob, gives his covenant name. The sons of Esau were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jealam, and Korah. The sons of Eliphaz were Timmon, Omar, Zephi, Gatham, and Kenaz, and by Timnah.
Amalek, the sons of Reuel, were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizah. The sons of Sarah were Lotan, Shabal, Zibin, Enach, Dishan, Ezer, and Dishan. The sons of Lotan were Hai, Homam. Lotan's sister was Tamina. The sons of Shabal were Elyon, Manath, Abal, Shafai, and Unam. The sons of Zibin were Ah. I want to say Aha. and Ana. The sons of Ana was Dishan. The sons of Dishan was Hamran, Ishban, Isran, and Shiran. The sons of Ezra were Bilhan, Zaran, and Jakan. The sons of Dishan were Uz and Aaron.
Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the children of Israel. Bela the son of Beor and the name of his city was Den Haba and when Bela died Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. When Jobab died, Hosham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. And when Hosham had died, Hadad the son of Bedad who attacked Midian in the field of Moab reigned in his place. The name of his city was Avith.
When Hadad died, Shamla of Masarecha reigned in his place. And when Shamla died, Saul of Rehoboth, by the river, reigned in his place. When Saul died, Baal-Hanan, the son of Achbor, reigned in his place. And when Baal-Hanan died, Hadad reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Pi. His wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Medred, the daughter of Meziba. Hadad died also. And the chiefs of Edom were Chief Timna, Chief Alaya, Chief Jetheth, Chief Aholaiabama, Chief Alaa, Chief Binan, Chief Kinaz, Chief Timan, Chief Mizbar, Chief Magdiel, and Chief Imran. These were the chiefs of Edom. We didn't even get to David yet. I thought we were going to get to David. I messed that up. That's chapter 2. We got to Edom. Yeah, we got through Edom. We didn't get through the sons of Israel.
So these are just all the kings and all the genealogy of all the other nations. There are some nations that we recognize, like Midian, right? So lots of these are like, oh, distant relatives that don't like each other. Oh, that's our calling. Get along with your distant relatives or else you're going to have war with them because you're trying to take over each other's lands. Moab and Midian and all these other people who are fighting against each other. Is that what the calling is? I'm not specifically sure that's what the calling is. No?
But it was interesting to me that we did get Didn't Islam come from Ishmael? Like that's where they said that came from. So it didn't go well for Abraham doing what he did. Yeah, although it's God himself who says to Hagar that he's going to make Ishmael into a great nation. So, because he's somehow connected to Abraham, God is still going to show some type of grace. By grace, I mean like common grace, not salvific favor.
It's interesting, right? This is this whole story of all these people who end up descending from Abraham. But yet, some of these are kings who are reigning over Israel before they ever had their own king. It's just a kind of weird way to start off this book, isn't it? I think the ancient writers talk that this is most likely Ezra who wrote this, and so it's him kind of saying here's how everything came about.
We can go all the way back to Adam. That's where chapter 1, verse 1 started, and we could see the earth being filled with people, and we're able to trace a lot of the family line. And so he's specifically tracing the covenant line here with, uh, from Abraham. He's worked his way through his three different family branches.
It's like the constant question is, right? Okay. So who's, as we go through all these genealogies, you're going to down this branch, any Messiah here? Nope. Go down this branch. Any, anybody over here that's finally going to be the seed who will crush the head of the servant? Nope. Anybody over here that's finally going to become the King? Oh, maybe, maybe, maybe this one over here.
There's this constant searching for who's going to be the king, who's going to be the one who will bring the stability to God's people. Where is the covenant going to continue? I think that's what this is about. From verses 28 through 42 is all the children, descendants of Abraham, and then the kings of Edom are verses 43 through 54.
Alright, let's talk about sea calling. What do you call to do or how does it show you Jesus Christ? You can try to do best for us, but it'd be like the whole thing. Yeah, well, probably in my Bible, I would underline verse 28 and verse 43, right? The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael, and then it goes on with the different genealogies, and then 43, now these were the kings who reigned in Israel and reigned in the land of Edom before a king reigned over the children of Israel.
That's what I would underline. So, what are you gonna walk away from here thinking, oh, I gotta do that, or hey, I learned about Jesus with this. This is how I was pointed to Christ. Kind of hard to make a calling without going into the next section. Well, Jesus says that all the scriptures are pointing to him, so how? the reason why this was happening because we get to David and if we keep going, then we get to Christ.
Good. Yeah, that's what I did yesterday with Coffee and Devotions. Like, you know what other book of the Bible starts off just with a riveting, gripping type story? Matthew. Matthew, the genealogy of Jesus, right? From Abraham to David, David to Jesus.
So, yeah, it's our hope of Christ. We're no longer longing for a king. know who he is. We get to follow him. Ready to pray? Yep. All right. Father, we thank you for giving us your word and for the genealogies here, those stories that tell us of real people who really did things, and lands were filled, and people were born, and nations came out. But Lord, we thank you that you have given us a prince, a king, greater than all of those of Edom before, greater than even Abraham himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. And so, Father, we pray that you will please help us to follow him and to love you more and more. In Jesus' name, Amen. May God bless you.
