Psalm 8

Check us out. Transform your faith and your life. Hey, hey. Thanks for joining your word. We pray as we read your word now that you would work in our hearts, that we would believe in you, trust in you, extol your name, and worship you. Sorry about that. I'll give you one second here. Here we go. Psalm 8, to the chief musician on the instruments of Gath, a psalm of David. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth, who have set your glory above the heavens!
Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have ordained strength, because of your enemies, that you may silence the enemy and the avenger. You want to read 3 through 5, Olivia? When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you visit him? For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and you have crowned him with glory and honor. You have made Him to have dominion over the works of Your hands. You have put all things under His feet, all sheep and oxen, even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, that pass through the paths of the sea. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth. Well, we need to ask ourselves like every day, A, what is this about? B, you don't need to say it like the kids do. B, what is the best verse to summarize this? And C, what are we called to do in response to this? So A, what is this about?
Well, this is a psalm of David as he's looking around the world and as he looks up at the stars and as he looks at creation, what does he point out? That we are little lower than the angels. All right, yeah. So man is a little lower than the angels. Yeah, and is this something that David takes pride in, or what does it do? No, it humbles him. Yeah, it humbles him. Exactly, yeah. So as man is the pinnacle of God's creation, it doesn't give us a place of pride, but David points out here, right, what is man so frail?
Sorry, that's coming out of the Psalter version, right? The book of Psalms for singing goes, What is man so frail and weak that you should be mine? Right so that you should remember him exactly right? What is man so frail and weak that you should remember him? Just as a quick side story. I remember when we lived in Beaver Falls. I would work at McGuire home that you know it's kind of like a intense health care facility and I would often be driving home at 11 o'clock at night and I would see the stars above the Beaver Valley and the snow and the city and below and this song would come to my mind and I would sing this as I was driving home on snowy nights, right? God is the one who created the heavens, right? He made the earth, he made the animals and what's it meant to evoke from people, from his people?
All in worship. Yeah, that's right. All in worship. Have you ever been to that place before where there's something that made you just go, man, God is so amazing. The stars. Like literally. Like do you remember a time when that happened? Yeah, here in Iowa, and also in the desert between Arizona and California. The stars are amazing. Yeah, that's one of the things when we moved here. We moved from Beaver Valley, so where I was driving in Pennsylvania, it was kind of the country, but where we lived in the town, you couldn't really see the stars.
But out here, man, it is dark at night. And when you see all the stars start lighting up the sky, it's really cool. Until there's coyotes that start howling and you want to run inside. But even then, right, God made these animals, these great beasts, and yet God is mindful of us, frail people.
I think in my Bible here, my digital Bible, I'm going to highlight verse 9. I think that's kind of getting at what I think is the core of this, what it's meant to do. What about you? Would you highlight something different? Yeah, I would have highlighted five.
Okay. Or four, four. All right, verse four. Great. What is man that you are mindful of him in the son of man that you visit him? Good. Yeah. Well, now we have to ask ourselves, C, calling. What do you think God would call you to do in response to these words? praise him, be humble, that he's the one that gives everything and sustains everything. It's not us. Yeah, good. Good, right?
So praising him and being humble because it's God who's made us, and that he's mindful of us, and he's cared for us. What a rich blessing it is to know that the God who upholds the universe by the power of his right hand numbers the very hairs on your head, that God knows us, that God loves us, that God is mindful of man, that should be accomplished so much for this day. What a blessing it is to hear your word, to sit at your feet, and to stand in awe of your natural revelation. We pray that you would let us never lose sight of you, our creator, and that your Holy Spirit would lift up our hearts to you, that we would stand in reverence and in worship, that we might sing your glory.
