Psalm 73

Man, you guys are good. You're on top of it today. Woo, doggie. Oh, you know what we didn't have? It's coffee and devotions. I haven't had coffee. Well, good morning. As Debra said, welcome to Coffee and Devotions. This Thursday morning is where every day we get together, get into God's Word, and we grow in our love for the Lord together. And this year, 2021, we'll make it through all the wisdom lecture. Well, for the next couple of days, I'm bacheloring it with the kids, so pray for me as we try to hold down the fort here while mom is at a homeschool conference. Why don't we go ahead and pray we'll get into God's Word.
Father, we thank you so much for this day. We pray that you would care for us now, that you would Watch over us and let us believe your word in Jesus' name. Amen. David, can you go help your little sister? Okay. Thank you. Alright, here we go. Psalm 73. A psalm of Asaph. Truly, God is good to Israel, to such as are pure in heart. But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the boastful when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
For there was no pains in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, nor are they Plagued like other men. Plagued like other men, yeah. Therefore, servants. Therefore. Pride. Therefore, pride serves as their necklace. Violence covers their like a garment. Their eyes bulge. Bulge. With abundance. They have more than heart could wish. They scoff and speak weakly concerning oppression. They speak loftily. They set their mouths against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth. Oh boy. Do they sound like they have a lot of self-control? Nope. Does it sound like they need a lot of things? Nope. Nope.
What do they have? Lack or abundance? Abundance. Abundance, right? Go ahead and finish reading, Debra. Therefore his people return here, and waters of a full cup are drained by them. And they say, how does God know? And is there knowledge in the Most High, who are always? Behold. Behold, these are ungodly. Those who always at ease. they increase in riches.
Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain. All right, so surely I've cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocence. For all day long I have been plagued and chastened every morning. If I had said, I will speak thus, behold, I would have been untrue to the generations of your children. When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me until I went into the sanctuary of God.
Then I understood their... So are the wicked people like, again, is it hard for them or do they have a good life? They're bad, no. It says they're having all sorts of good things. And they act like God doesn't watch and God doesn't understand. And the psalmist is saying, I don't get it. Why do they get good things and we get bad things? Until I went into the sanctuary of God, then I understood their end. That would be a great thing to read. Go ahead and keep reading, Nathan.
Surely you sent them in slippery places. You cast them down into destruction. O how they are brought to desolation as in a moment. Then are utterly consumed with terrors as a dream when one awakes. So the Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their image. boy what what's their end is it good or is it for like like they're in slippery places that like they've been cast down for destruction Thus my heart was grieved, and I was vexed in my mind. I was so foolish and ignorant. I was like a beast before you. Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You hold me by my right hand. You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
So if we if we just look at other people's stuff and how other people enjoy their stuff, even though they don't love God It says that Yep, it says that that makes us foolish and ignorant Yeah, we want to walk before God but you know who's good to us God it says that God takes us by the right hand Yeah, and he walks us he cares for us I That's right, okay.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is none on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. For indeed, those who are far from you shall perish, who have destroyed all those who desert you for harlotry. But it is good for me to draw near to God. I have put my trust in the Lord God that I may declare your works." So what do you think, guys? What should we focus on? God. On God. God and Jesus. That's right. We focus on Jesus Christ, and as we focus on Jesus Christ, then we find joy.
But if we focus on other people's stuff and their good life, what happens to us? Do we get happy? That's right. We're following the way of Satan. Yeah, right. So we should look to who? We should look to God. That's right. We should look to the Lord. We should look to God.
Even when the wicked are prosperous, we know their end. But we know that the Lord cares for us, that he holds us with his right hand, that he walks with us, and that he cares for all of our ways. So let us not look on the things of the earth, but let us fix our eyes on the things above. Let's go ahead and pray, guys. Lord, we thank you so much that we can fix our eyes upon Jesus Christ, who sits at your right hand, and who does all things good for us. Lord, we thank you that we know our end, and our end is forever glorifying you. Lord, we pray that you might care for our hearts, that you might lift our hearts up, take our eyes away from this world, and let us focus on the things which are above. In Jesus' name, amen.
