Psalm 61

This is where every day we get together, we get into God's word and we grow in our love for the Lord together. And this year, 2021, we'll make it through all the wisdom literature. Well, thanks so much for joining me this morning. Hey, Karen, good to see you.
We're gonna get into God's word and we're going to just look at this short Psalm, Psalm 61 this morning. Why don't we go ahead and we'll pray and we'll get into God's word. Lord, we thank you so much for this day and we thank you that when our hearts are overwhelmed, you are our refuge. We pray that we would have your Holy Spirit this morning to teach us, lead us, and impress these words upon our souls. In Jesus' name, amen. All right, why don't we go ahead and turn into God's word this morning, Psalm 61. Hear to the chief musician on a stringed instrument, a Psalm of David. Hear my cry, O God, attend my prayer.
From the end of the earth I will cry to you. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy. I will abide in your tabernacle forever. I will trust in the shelter of your wings. Selah.
For you, O God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. You will prolong the king's life. his years as many generations. He shall abide before God forever. Oh prepare mercy and truth which may preserve them him So I will sing praises to your name forever That I may daily perform my vows.
Oh, man. There's so much here. This is so good. I I Okay, i'm just gonna we're just gonna break this apart a little bit by a little bit Uh, but with not too much not too long. Okay, so david is is in a tough place, right? He cries hear my prayer. Oh god He says that from the ends of the earth, I will cry to you, right? This is so interesting.
In our day and age, we live in a world where people will say, oh, if you're having problems and if you really want to have peace, you need to have mindfulness. You need to have meditation. You need to just get in touch with yourself and your surroundings and the universe around you and just quiet yourself. Well, while I agree that we need to quiet ourselves, It's not about mindfulness of ourselves, but it's about turning our eyes up to God.
Our meditation is upon the Lord and upon His law day and night, to go to the Lord and find peace in Him. And that's where the psalmist David takes us to this morning. When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. That rock is Jesus Christ. We go to Jesus Christ. We go to that rock.
For you have been a shelter for me. Has God been your shelter? When things are going wrong in your life, do you go to the Lord to find refuge, a high tower, a fortress, a strong tower from the enemy? I will abide in your tabernacle forever. I will trust in the shelter of your wings.
Now, David is crying out in a time when the tabernacle is there. Interesting notice it's a tabernacle not a temple because David hasn't built the temple that's going to be his son Solomon who would but it's The tabernacle now is interesting There is no temple now But God has tabernacled amongst men Do you know what God calls you? For do you not know that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit and that the and that God dwells in you and No longer do we go to a tabernacle made with human hands to go seek out God. But the blessing of the New Testament is that God lives in us. We don't have to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem because God has made his tabernacle amongst men.
We trust in the shelter of God's wings. God gathers us together and preserves us and cares for us. You heard, for you, oh God, have heard my vows. You have given me the heritage of those who fear your name. You have that great hall of faith. We hope for what other people have now come to see and know. We have a godly heritage, those who have walked before us in faith.
You will prolong the king's life, his years, as many generations. He shall abide before God forever. Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. Indeed, God has preserved his king. Jesus has not seen decay. Jesus's life has been preserved, and he sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. And there he rules with justice and equity, mercy, and truth. There, at the throne of Jesus Christ, there is mercy for us.
So I will sing praises to your name forever, that I may daily perform my vows. What a beautiful reality there is for you and I, that when we die, our praises have only just begun. that when we breathe our last here on earth, our lungs will be filled in heaven with an eternal praise that will never cease, that we will join the myriads and myriads of angels and sing about the worthiness of the lamb who was slain, that we will bow before his throne forever, that that first day in heaven is only the beginning of the story in which we will experience marvelous blessings that are too good to describe. Oh, brothers and sisters, the Holy Spirit indwells in us now, but someday we will stand before the tabernacle made without human hands, with the whole assembly, the gathering together of the saints, and we will praise His name forever, for mercy, grace, and truth are with Him. I don't know about you, but my heart is overwhelming with this beautiful psalm, this short psalm that gives us so much hope that God cares for us. He's given us a rock. He's given us safety. Will you dwell there today? Will you fix your mind upon Jesus Christ? And will you live in the grace that God has given us?
Let's pray. Father, we thank you for Jesus Christ, and we thank you for the grace you have shown us in your Son. We pray, Father, that we might believe these things, and when our hearts are overwhelmed, that you would bring them to our minds. Father, we pray that we would have perfect peace because our minds might be stayed upon you. In Jesus' name, amen. May the Lord bless you today. May you rest in the peace and joy of Jesus Christ.
