Numbers 29:1-6

Good morning, good morning. Welcome to Coffee and Devotions. We're at Numbers chapter 29, verses 1 through 6, the Feast of Trumpets. Let's have some coffee, we'll pray, and we'll get into God's Word. Let's pray. God, we thank you for your word. We thank you for what a blessing it is to get to come to you. We pray that you would teach us, that you would help us this morning to understand your word, and that you would apply it to our lives. In Jesus's name, amen.
All right, Numbers chapter 29, verses one through six. Let's go ahead and read the passage together now. In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.
You shall offer a burnt offering as a sweet aroma to Yehovah. one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs in their first year without blemish. The grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil, three-tenths of an ephah for the bull, two-tenths for the ram, and one-tenth for each of the seven lambs. Also one kid of the goats as a sin offering to make atonement for you, besides the burnt offering with its grain offering for the new moon the regular burnt offering with its grain offering and their drink offerings according to their ordinance as a sweet aroma an offering made by fire to the lord well we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and c what are we called to do so a what is this about Well, this is the Feast of Trumpets.
It's a new moon feast, the same as every other month. However, there's just a little bit different sacrifice. So instead of having two bowls, you would have one. But other than that, the sacrifices still stay the same. The grain offerings are the same. The young kid bowl or young kid goat as a sin offering is the same. But there's one difference.
This is the beginning of the seventh month, which is going to be the month filled with different festivals. So you're going to have the Feast of Trumpets, and then the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of B'tzug. It's the highest holy month, the seventh month in Israel. But it's marked out by this feast of trumpets. At every other new moon, you had these sacrifices, but on the seventh month, the priest took the, so far, most likely, the ram's horn that they use as a trumpet, and blew that ram's horn, calling God's attention to the sacrifice that was being made. And so this is what's going on in the in the seventh month of new moon sacrifices.
It's a festival the same as all the others, but it's a special one, remembering, reminding the Lord that this is the time that he will make atonement for his people and that they will remember that they have tabernacled with him and him with them in the wilderness. So we'll get into all the rest of that in chapter 29 for about these last of the annual feasts.
Well, B, what's the best verse to summarize this? Well, I think I would underline verse 1. And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work, For you, it is a day of blowing the trumpets. So I would say that is the best verse, verse one, right? By the way, the name for this is now called Rosh Hashanah. So this is the day of blowing trumpets.
But see calling, what are we called to do? How does this make a covenant bridge to our lives today? How does it point us to Christ? Well, I think that this, again, reminds us that we don't need this. We don't need the tabernacle or the temple anymore because we have a high priest in heaven and we don't need the trumpets to blow the horn that God would somehow remember us, right?
No. We have Jesus Christ who sits in the Holy of Holies in heaven. And God takes notice of you. If you are in Jesus Christ, you are welcomed into God's presence. And you are able to boldly go before his throne of grace. All these things are pointing us to Jesus. All these things are pointing us to the heavenly ministry that Jesus would have and does have now. So there's no more blowing of the trumpets. We don't need to get God's attention. This isn't his good morning wake up alarm. But we're able to go to the Lord and know that he hears us. We're able to live our lives knowing that we do so in the presence of God himself.
Let's pray. Father, we thank you so much for Jesus, who is our atonement, We thank you so much for Jesus, who is the one who gives us access into the Holy of Holies. We thank you for giving us your son, the lamb who was slain. And because of him, your eye is always upon us to look upon us with love and grace. Lord, we thank you for taking notice of us. What are we so frail and weak that you, the ruler of the universe, would be mindful of us? But you are, Lord, and so we thank you. Please care for us and watch over us in Jesus's name. Amen. Well, may you have in your heart the peace of Jesus Christ that surpasses all understanding. As you know, that God's face shines down upon you because of his son. I'll see you next time.
