Scripture Passage
Demons are Cast Out
Mark 1:21–28
31 Then He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority. 33 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

and this morning we are at luke chapter 4 verses 31 through 37 luke chapter 4 verses 31-37 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word father we pray that we would understand your word that you would bless us by opening our eyes unstopping our ears softening our hearts lord that we would see hear understand and believe what you would have for us today in jesus name amen all right luke chapter 4 beginning at verse 31 then he went down to capernaum a city of galilee and was teaching them on the sabbaths and they were astonished at his teaching for his word was with authority now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon and he cried out with a loud voice saying let us alone what what have we to do with you jesus of nazareth did you come to destroy us i know who you are the holy one of god but jesus rebuked him saying be quiet and come out of him and when the demon had thrown him in their midst it came out of him and did not hurt him then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves saying what a word is this for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out and the report about him went out into every place in the surrounding region all right so we have this passage this morning luke chapter 4 verses 31 through 37 this is where we need to ask ourselves a what is this about be what is the best verse and c what are we called to do in response to this but first i'm going to ask you if you find these videos helpful feel free to hit the like button or share this but let's ask ourselves a what is this about a what is this about well this is jesus continuing his teaching remember yesterday jesus was there in capernaum or sorry in nazareth and he was teaching in the synagogues and we find out that jesus's ministry of teaching goes larger than that more than just nazareth he's going throughout other synagogues and he's teaching them and the people are astonished they're amazed they marvel at jesus why because he teaches as one who has authority jesus comes and he teaches not just saying here's what all the jots and the tittles are but here is the very word of god not just here are all the grammatical constructs not just here's what every little thing is not just arguing with people and not just giving his opinion but he was declaring with authority this is what god's word says what it means and here i am before you and he shows them this by casting out the demon it's interesting what the demon says and does isn't it the demon says so the unclean spirit as luke calls them calls it let us alone what we have we to do with you jesus of nazareth did you come to destroy us interesting that it's plural us it's more than one unclean spirit or maybe he's saying that you know all the unclean spirits in the world is this why jesus came and then what does he say i know who you are the holy one of god well now that's interesting that this unclean spirit says this because it's almost as if luke put this here for a reason the spirit of the lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted and then down at the bottom to proclaim acceptance of the year of the lord it's like this unclean spirit knows that jesus is the holy one of god that he is the only begotten one that he is the unique son of god that he is the one who would come and proclaim good news to destroy the power of satan and his demons this is what ephesians chapter 4 tells us or sorry ephesians chapter 5 and 6 tell us that jesus did now it's amazing here because jesus tells him zip your lips don't say that don't talk right his time hasn't yet come it was not for the demons to proclaim this but jesus would send out his apostles to proclaim this good news jesus would send out his disciples to go tell people of himself not the demons so jesus rebukes him the evil spirit comes out it doesn't harm the man and the people are amazed right because jesus doesn't just say these things but jesus comes in word and in power jesus comes both in speech and in doing it is jesus who is stronger than even the unclean spirits this is this is amazing right so in in my in my bible i think i'm going to underline the and they were astonished at his teaching for his word was with authority and also these last two verses down here then they were all amazed and spoke to themselves what what a word is this for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out and the report about him went into every place in the surrounding region right people just couldn't keep this to themselves right this this one came and he was teaching with authority and he was passing out demons and they wanted to go spread the news about this man this teacher who could cast out unclean spirits this teacher who was the holy one of god this teacher who was proclaiming freedom to the captives well okay so i think we understand what this is about i'm not sure i gave us a sentence let me ask you how would you summarize this passage we kind of went through what it's about but let me know how would you write this just just real short real small one sentence to summarize this section what would you write in the margin of your bible well lastly we need to ask ourselves c calling what are we called to do in response to these words what are we called to do in response to these words well do you believe that jesus christ speaks and does with power do you believe that jesus christ truly was god and man that jesus came in the flesh that he was the one who the apostles heard and whom they had seen and whom they had felt with their own hands that they heard the very words of life from jesus do you believe in this historical real jesus that luke is telling us about i think that's the very first thing that the gospels are again and again and again calling us to this is the true man jesus christ the very son of god the only begotten of the father who is born of a virgin mary and here truly walks among men speaks among men they hear his voice and the demons are cast out do you believe in jesus christ the savior of the world i think that's our first calling and we're going to see that again and again as we keep moving through the gospels and that's the first thing we need to ask ourselves but maybe we need to break that down a little bit more we could also be called to to tell others right and the report about him went into every place in the surrounding region we saw that matthew we saw that in mark and now we see it here in luke jesus's fame continues to spread because people are telling about jesus are you telling others about jesus are you spreading the report about this great king who has taken away your sins are you telling others about this great one who comes and gives freedom to the captives but you might find that something else in this passage has pushed down upon your soul has pushed down upon your heart i'd love to hear i love when i get text messages or emails or private messages on facebook from you guys letting me know how these words are affecting your life let me know let me know down in the comments how do you think these words are impacting your life well let's go ahead and pray this morning lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the rich blessing it is to get to come to your word to hear it lord we thank you so much for jesus christ father we pray that you would care for us and that we would believe in you father we pray that you would lord let us know how we are to say your word how we can speak of you lord that you might give us opportunities that you would that you would let us see those around us and give us those moments where we could take up courage and that we could spread the report of jesus in his name we pray amen well may god bless you today and fill you with peace bye
