Luke 4:16–30

[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hey welcome to coffee and devotions this wednesday morning august 12th is where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends before my kids wake up you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 4 beginning at verse 16 luke chapter 4 verse 16 and going down to verse 30. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray oh lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for what a blessing it is to be able to read your word father we pray that we would hear that we would understand that we would know that you are god we pray that this would have profound impacts on our life lord we pray that you would care for us as jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 4 beginning at verse 16. so he came to nazareth where he had been brought up and as the his custom was he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day and stood up to read and as he was handed the book of the prophet isaiah and when he had opened the book he found the place where it was written the spirit of the lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind to set at liberty those who are oppressed i'm sorry whoo this news came out of nowhere it's set at liberty those who are oppressed to proclaim the accept this acceptable year of the lord then he closed the book gave it back to the attendant and sat down and the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him and he began to say to them today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing so all bore witness to him and marveled at his gracious words which he which proceeded out of his mouth and they said is this not joseph's son he said to them you will surely say this proverb to me physician heal yourself whatever we have heard done in capernaum do also here in your country then he said assuredly i say to you no prophet is accepted in his own country but i tell you truly many widows were in israel in the days of elijah when the heaven was shut up three years and six months and there was a great famine throughout all the land but to none of them was elijah sent except zarephath in the region of sidon to a woman who was a widow and many lepers were in israel in the time of elisha the prophet and none of them was cleansed except naaman the syrian so all those in the synagogue when they heard these things were filled with wrath and rose up and thrust him out of the city and they led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built that they might throw him down over the cliff then passing through the midst of them he went his way well what an interesting passage we have for us this morning we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words oh a what is this about well we need to remember that this is pretty much the beginning of jesus's teaching ministry right i mean jesus is accepted throughout all galilee before that is when jesus was tempted so i mean this is the beginning of jesus's teaching ministry and this is where he goes to his hometown and what does he do he just like every other sabbath every other you know good jewish sabbath he would go into the synagogue on on saturday and and he went in and he opened up the scroll he he went to isaiah and he and he started to read nothing unfamiliar with that and then he proceeds to do something different than what our churches do at that time in the synagogue the person who was teaching would sit down and everybody else would remain standing and jesus sits down and he begins to teach and it's interesting he he says that these words from isaiah the prophet are fulfilled in their hearing that the spirit of the lord is upon him and that he is god's anointed one that means he is anointed one means he is god's messiah and he has come to preach gospel to the poor but it's interesting what he says right he after he does all these things they ask hold on hold on we know who your dad is you're just a carpenter's boy you're just the son of the contractor down the road we know who you are what's going on here and jesus said well hold on surely you're going to say this proverb to me and he talks about how he's not going to be accepted in his own town and that they're going to he he prophesies what's going to happen at his crucifixion but it's interesting too he points out that elijah is sent to the widow in sidon that's outside the jewish area and that elisha is is able to heal naaman the syrian neither of those jewish people and at this point they are incensed with jesus at this point they are upset with jesus at this point no more stop it we're done with you they take them to the edge of the cliff and what do they want to do they want to shove them off i'm always amazed by this last part right they took him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built that they might throw him down over the cliff then passing through the midst of them he went his way he just walks right through right through the middle of the crowd and he just leads goes his own way so what is this about this is about jesus beginning his earthly ministry and immediately being rejected that's what i would write in the margin of my bible what would you write in the margin of your bible would you write something else well we need to ask ourselves now what is the best verse to summarize this section well it's interesting because this is both jesus's announcement and jesus's uh rejection and so i think i think i'm gonna underline verse 28 right that they were filled with wrath i'm going to highlight that but up here i'm also going to highlight what jesus says book of the prophet isaiah down through the prophecy i'm going to highlight that because this is jesus fulfilling the promises of god from the old testament jesus is the one who's going to come and he's going to do this that he is going to proclaim liberty to the captives that jesus is literally going to give sight to the blind that jesus is going to literally uh bring out those who are oppressed so uh we need to so so that's our a what is this about this is our b best first now we need to ask ourselves c what are we called to do in response to these words well i think in my heart and in my life i need to ask myself do i sit at the feet of jesus and do i accept the teaching of god even when i might not like it let me say that again will i accept and will i do the things which god teaches me even though i might not like it last night at bible study we were going through matthew chapter 5 where jesus tells us to not take vengeance for ourselves but when somebody slaps us on the cheek we turn and we let them slap the other side that when a roman centurion would come and would try to tell them to go one mile they would go with them too if somebody was evil and they were trying to sue someone unjustly and take their tunic that they would give their cloak also that if somebody wanted to borrow that we would give it freely and the point being was that this is a hard these are hard passages that i need to believe the things that jesus teaches me and that they need to go deep down into my heart and that even when they are difficult crying out to the holy spirit that i would believe them and do them we notice that jesus says humanity is so real here they know his father they know joseph they know mary how can how can this how can this boy how can this young man here how can this man before though who they saw grow up how can he be the fulfillment of these things well we're going to see it's absolutely clear that jesus was the fulfillment of those things but because they were so familiar with jesus they became incensed at him they became appalled by him that he could say these things let me ask you have you become too familiar with jesus have you forgotten the angry looks that he got from these people that they literally wanted to murder him can you see the the gnashing of their teeth and the bloodshot eyes that they would have as they were bulging with anger just wanting to kill him for even suggesting these things could you imagine as we go through the book of luke i want you to remember this is the true god true man now these are the things that he suffered for us these are the things that he taught these are the things that he did and that we must not become so familiar with jesus that we lose sight of the magnitude of what's going on here well let's go ahead and pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you so much for sending your only begotten son father you have given us a perfect messiah one who has come and led captivity captive lord you are the one who has given sight the blind you are the one who has proclaimed liberty to the slaves you are the one who has turned this world on its head and has given us good news father we pray now that we would trust in that good news that we would cling on to jesus the one who rescues us from this world and from your wrath father we pray that you would give us a good day today lord that we would walk about remembering who jesus christ is in his name we pray amen well may the lord bless you today and may you go with peace bye
