50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday morning november 7th this week every weekday morning at 9 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we make it through all the gospels well today is our last day in the book of luke and tomorrow we will pick up in uh the book of john so congratulations if you've been going along with us just a few verses a day verses 49 through 53 why don't we go ahead and pray and get into god's word father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that we would fix our eyes upon jesus christ the author and perfecter of our faith in his name we pray amen all right here we go luke chapter 24 beginning at verse 49 behold i send the promise of my father upon you but tarry in the city of jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high and he led them out as far as bethany and he lifted up his hands and blessed them now it came to pass while he blessed them that he was parted from them and carried up into heaven and they worshiped him and returned to jerusalem with great joy and we're continually in the temple praising and blessing god amen well what a great passage we have for us today we didn't need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to this a what is this about when jesus christ blesses his followers and he ascends up into heaven isn't it amazing that some of the last thing that jesus does is he lifts up his hands and he blesses his people jesus loves his people jesus cares for his disciples jesus wants them to know that god's favor is upon them and he pronounces that benediction upon them and then it came to pass while he blessed them right it's as if jesus's hands are are lifted up and he's right there and he's blessing them and he's taken away and they go into the temple and they can't help but praising god and and thanking god blessing god for everything that he had done this whole passage has been about this hasn't it the whole book of luke was to get us from the old testament from from jesus being born all the way up to jesus knowing what was going to happen the whole time still going through with it and now he ascends up into heaven did you know that there's a there's a gospel of luke volume two did you know there's a second part to this story it's the book of acts i'll challenge you today go go read the book of the first chapter the book of acts luke wrote the book of acts as well and it's volume 2 of this gospel and so the work doesn't just end with jesus being ascended up into heaven but the book of acts has some interesting things about this the best verse to summarize this i'm going to uh highlight verse 15 about jesus blessing them as well as verse 52 and 53 okay so the only thing i didn't highlight was 51 but that's okay right and they worshipped him and returned to jerusalem with great joy calling what are we called to do will you worship the risen and ascended lord jesus christ will you bow at his throne will you worship his name will you praise god and bless your father who's in heaven for the great work that jesus christ has done for dying on the cross for sinners like you and like me and for rising up into heaven first ascending to the right hand of god his father and sitting down upon his throne you have a king who is in heaven there's lots of turmoil today people don't know who's going to be the next president but you know who's king you know that jesus christ is sitting upon his throne and you have a hope in your heart that is secure praise god bless god let's pray together now father we thank you so much for the finished work of jesus christ we thank you lord for our king who sits on his throne in heaven we thank you for his love for us that he fulfilled everything from moses and the prophets and the psalms and that you have cared for us so much we praise you and we bless you lord in jesus name amen well may god bless you today and may you go about praising and blessing god for the great work he has done in jesus christ bye
