13 Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.
17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you walk and are sad?”
18 Then the one whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”
19 And He said to them, “What things?”
So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a Prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”
25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.
30 Now it came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.
32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions it is thursday morning november 5th that's where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends before my kids wake up you and i we get together we have some coffee and we get into god's word well this week i am in wyoming for presbytery and so my good friend friend elia massey is here uh and he is going to do coffee and devotions with us we're at luke 24 verses 13 through 32. why don't we go ahead and pray and get into god's word thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would bless us as we read your word that it would seep deeply into our hearts that we would believe it that we would have ears to hear and minds to understand and faith lord to apply these things in our hearts in jesus name amen all right luke 24 13-32 i'll let you read the text now behold the two of them were traveling that same day to a village a village called a message i should mention elia is pakistani so he's reading this in his second or third language which was seven miles from jerusalem and they talked together of all these things which had happened so it was while while they also conversed and reasoned that jesus himself draw near and went with them but their eyes were displayed and so that they did not know him and he said to them what kind of conversation is that is this that you have with one another as you as you walked and said answered and said to him are you the only stranger in jerusalem and have you not known things which happened there in these days so they said to him the things concerning jesus and a second went to tomb and found it just as the women had said but him they did not see then he said to them a foolish one and slow of hard to believe in in all that the prophets have spoken but not to christ to have suffered these things and to enter into his glory and beginning at moses and all the prophets he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself and then they drew near to the village where they were going and he indicated that he he would have gone further but they constrained him saying abide with us for it is toward evening and the day is far spent and he went into into stay with them now it came to pass as he sat the table with them they took bread blessed and broken and gave it to them then their eyes were opened and they knew him and he vanished from their side and they said to one another didn't our heart burned with us while he taught with us as as on the road and while he opened the scripture to us all right so uh if he just had one sentence how would you summarize this passage in one sentence um i would say jesus now to apply jesus presence through his spirit and through the scripture with us is really amazing as they are astonishing their hearts were burned with that so we are here christ promised that we are he's always with us and that was more than devotions okay yeah yeah and our morning devotions at presbytery we were talking about the presence of christ and trinitarian prayers and so yeah in this passage right there's people walking on the way to emmaus and and jesus appears to them and isn't it interesting they they don't recognize jesus yeah that's right and i i think their their question is is interesting he says you know what things and they say you know are you the only stranger what don't you know these things yeah many times i mean we believe in christ and they believe his presence and many times we don't understand how he is really doing the things in our lives and especially these days and uh pandemic we don't understand what's going on and uh you mean god is still working in the pandemic he's working and he's always working as jesus also said my father always works and he loves work even today yeah we thank god we are here together yeah which we are not thinking it may not happen yeah yeah yeah just so you know we we're at presbyterian that's what all the background noise is this is the regional gathering together of all the elders the ruling and teaching elders in our denomination and so uh dr massey is one of those uh teaching elders in our denomination and uh so it's a great blessing that even now we get together together in the name of christ i think there's a lot of hope in this passage you know jesus it's so amazing jesus says to them you know from moses through all the prophets he explains the scriptures to them and what does he tell them from moses all the process what is what what has been said about him people may be thinking different way because they were they did not understand the work of christ and what he will do and what he would go through and christ said it was all for his glory to go suffer so for people who misunderstand especially in this pandemic suffering why it's there it is a glory for god's own glory and for the uh for trans or for our own benefits to grow in christ how he suffered and this this sufferings is temporary yeah and uh but it's uh it has a eternal uh consequences or implications yes yeah great yeah so there's eternal jesus knew that this was going to happen it was prophesied he explains us to them but there's also even eternal consequences for our own suffering when we're suffering in for our christ yeah yeah well what would what how do you think this would apply to your life feel free to let us know down
