26 Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man, Simon a Cyrenian, who was coming from the country, and on him they laid the cross that he might bear it after Jesus.
27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For indeed the days are coming in which they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which never nursed!’ 30 Then they will begin ‘to say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!” ’ 31 For if they do these things in the green wood, what will be done in the dry?”
32 There were also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to death. 33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”
And they divided His garments and cast lots. 35 And the people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them sneered, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God.”
36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself.”
38 And an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew:
THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS
39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
44 Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed His last.
47 So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
48 And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned. 49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man. 51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before. 54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
55 And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this let's see this is tuesday morning november 3rd this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we have a cup of coffee we get to god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we finish up luke chapter 23 so why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for what a rich blessing it is to be able to be in your word this morning father we pray that you would let us understand your word we pray that these would not just be words on a page of things happening in the past but father we would see the eternal reality of what you are teaching us in jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 23 beginning at verse 26 now as they led him away they laid hold of a certain man simon a siren who is coming from the to hit everything thank the lord there's four gospels and so we'll have more time in the book of john to slow down a little bit we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to this well a what is this about jesus is crucified and buried jesus the king of the jews is put to death maybe you might say uh jesus is executed upon a cross let me know down in the comments what would you how would you summarize this section in in one sentence just a few things that are interesting here uh the first part that jesus is is led to that place but he talks to these women who are following right and they're isn't it interesting all of his disciples flee but the women are there they're following him even though from a distance and jesus even speaks to them right and he tells them you know don't cry for me cry for you and there's about to be persecution that's going to come there's hardship that's going to come there it would be better for them if they went where jesus knew he was going to go jesus was not going to end at the cross jesus was not going to end in that tomb but there were hard things in store for them but he's led up to calvary he's led up to that place of the skull golgotha and there he's crucified with the thief on his right a thief on his left and we have this amazing story of one of them is mocking jesus and ridiculing him and the other says do you do not even fear god and he he he recognizes his own sin he recognizes his own guilt he says that they're rightly and justly condemned but this jesus is totally innocent and he asked jesus this one simple question remember me when you enter into your kingdom and what does jesus reply to this dying man assuredly i say to you today you will be with me in paradise jesus is even showing mercy and love to a center next to him giving him hope giving him a promise of eternal life even as the man is dying what a great blessing it is to know that even if our dying breath jesus christ might be near to us i don't know about you but we can jump straight into calling and say maybe that's a good reason why we should be praying for those who we don't know what their eternal state is even till the day they die we just don't know it might be that last hour that the lord might save them that they would come to their senses and realize that they're justly condemned but there is a god who has condemned his own son to die for their sake and even above jesus's name written in a greek and latin and hebrew so that everybody knew of all tribes of all tongues of all languages whoever walked by they would know what his condemnation was and what was it this is the king of the jews and jesus dies there he offers up his spirit unto god and he dies he won't take any consolation he will not minimize the pain but he is going to take the full wrath of god upon himself as he is hung there upon the cross but as he's there he dies with those people standing afar off and and what happens we find out that joseph of arimathea there was someone in the sanhedrin someone of the council who did not agree with the condemnation of jesus and he goes and he tries and he does he gets the the body of jesus and they lay him in a rich man's tomb this is fulfillment of the prophecies of god that he was numbered with the transgressors but he was buried with a righteous well what's the best verse to summarize this passage i'm going to leave that one up to you right this is a big section this is like 29 verses or something like that feel free to let me know down in the comments what would you underline as the best verse to summarize this whole section if you could only choose one maybe two verses what would you choose to summarize well lastly calling do we believe that jesus christ is the one who died the innocent man as the new testament tells us that the righteous one might die for the unrighteous that jesus is at once for all sacrifice so we would say with paul that we are determined to know this one thing jesus christ and him crucified do we set our eyes and set our hope upon jesus christ and upon him alone let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we thank you father for the great sacrifice of jesus christ upon that cross and we pray that we would seek after him with all of our hearts father we pray that we would be alive unto christ that we too might enter into your kingdom father we thank you that by faith we have entrance into that kingdom we thank you that you have poured out your grace upon your chosen ones your people whom you love and we pray father that we might walk in that love that we would have a hope in jesus christ till our dying breaths in jesus name amen oh may god bless you today and may he fill your heart with peace i'm going to give you two last things first if there is someone that you would like me to pray for
