Luke 23:13-25

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday morning november 2nd this is where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends before my kids wake up you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at luke chapter 23 verses 13 through 25 luke chapter 23 we're going to finish the book of luke on saturday so we are really close to getting into the last book our last gospel in our series why don't we go ahead and pray and get into god's word this morning father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would teach us that we would follow after you we pray father that you would have us know your word and that we would have faith in jesus christ it's in his name we pray amen well we have some coffee all right here we go luke chapter 13 or 23. then pilate when he when he had called together the chief priests the rulers the people said to them you have brought this man to me as one who misleads the people and indeed having examined him in your presence i have found no fault in this man concerning those things which you accuse him neither did herod for you sent for i sent him back to you and indeed nothing deserving of death has been found by him i will therefore chastise him and release him for it was necessary for him to release one of them at the feast and they cried out at once saying away with this man and released to us barabbas who had been thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the city and for murder pilate therefore wishing to release jesus again called out to them but they shouted saying crucify him crucify him then he said to them the third time why what evil has he done i have found no reason for death in him i will therefore chastise him and let him go but they were insistent demanding with loud voices that he be crucified and the voice voices of these men and of the chief priests prevailed so pilate gave a sentence that it should be as they requested and he released to them the one they requested for who for rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison but he delivered jesus to their will well we need to ask ourselves like every morning a what is this about b what's the best verse for this passage and see what are we called to do in response to these words so first a what is this about well this is the kangaroo court right if i need to summarize this in one sentence in my bible i think i would write something like jesus is tried by pilate but condemned by the chief priests and so that's where i would say maybe you would disagree with me on that but that's fine what is this about right this is a kangaroo court jesus has been to pilate pilate finds out he's from he's from galilee so he sends him off to herod herod finds out that i don't find anything wrong in this right he's not some trick pony he's not going to do any miracles from me so he sends them back to herod here it says i don't there's nothing wrong with this guy he's not he's not worth being crucified but there's a tradition right he always releases to them one person so he says do you want barabbas or do you want this jesus and they want barabbas and barabbas was a murderer barabbas was inciting a rebellion and they would rather have barabbas than they would have jesus isn't that telling right no wonder why in the book of acts chapter 2 it's peter when he's preaching says that you killed him by roman hands i mean it's it's there responsible for his death even though the romans themselves were the ones who crucified him they were the ones out calling out crucify him crucify him now i'm going to go ahead and just put a pause button on that real quick and we're going to ask the best verse what's the best verse to summarize this section well i think i'm going to underline verse 20. pilate therefore wishing to release jesus again called out to them but they shouted saying crucify him crucify him calling i think this is the remarkable thing to me jesus knew this was going to happen jesus told his disciples this was going to happen jesus told his disciples that they were going to turn on him that he had to be handed over to the chief priests and to the scribes and that they would hand them over to the to the romans that he would be crucified that he would die jesus knew this was going to happen and yet still did it jesus knew he was going to be betrayed by his own people but he still went through with it that he might gain a people who were once not called his people that he might be the the suffering servant who would go as a lamb led to the slaughter what a great love that jesus has for you and for me that for those of us who are in christ jesus that he endured mocking that he endured being betrayed by his fellow countrymen that he endured the shame as an innocent man to be a sacrifice the atoning sacrifice for you and for me that's something we can cling on to as i hope we could
