Scripture Passage
Christ Cleanses Ten Lepers
11 Now it happened as He went to Jerusalem that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 Then as He entered a certain village, there met Him ten men who were lepers, who stood afar off. 13 And they lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!”
14 So when He saw them, He said to them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” And so it was that as they went, they were cleansed.
15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, returned, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 and fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan.
17 So Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Were there not any found who returned to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Arise, go your way. Your faith has made you well.”
Christ Teaches on the Second Coming
20 Now when He was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation; 21 nor will they say, ‘See here!’ or ‘See there!’ For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.”
22 Then He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. 23 And they will say to you, ‘Look here!’ or ‘Look there!’ Do not go after them or follow them. 24 For as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven, so also the Son of Man will be in His day. 25 But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; 29 but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed.
31 “In that day, he who is on the housetop, and his goods are in the house, let him not come down to take them away. And likewise the one who is in the field, let him not turn back. 32 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it. 34 I tell you, in that night there will be two men in one bed: the one will be taken and the other will be left. 35 Two women will be grinding together: the one will be taken and the other left. 36 Two men will be in the field: the one will be taken and the other left.”
37 And they answered and said to Him, “Where, Lord?”
So He said to them, “Wherever the body is, there the eagles will be gathered together.”
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Lk 17:11–37.
A — About
What Is This Passage About?
Jesus cleanses ten lepers, but only the Samaritan returns to glorify God and thank Jesus. Jesus then teaches that God's kingdom is already present in him and that the Son of Man will return unmistakably, so his disciples must seek God's glory rather than merely his gifts.
B — Best Verse
Which Verse Best Summarizes the Passage?
Luke 17:15–16
one of them when he saw that he was healed returned with a loud voice glorified god and fell on his face at his feet giving him things pardon me giving him things and he was a samaritan
Bryan explicitly underlines verses 15–16 because the Samaritan's return, worship, and thanks show that faith seeks God's glory rather than merely receiving a benefit.
C — Called or Christ
C — Called to Do
Glorify God when he answers prayer, fall before him in gratitude for redemption, live for the purpose of glorifying and enjoying him, and confidently await Christ's return because his kingdom has begun in Jesus.

[Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning october 6th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends when i may both grab a spare second away from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together thanks for joining me this morning we are at luke chapter 17 verses 11 through 37. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word father we pray that you would bless us now as we get into your word we pray father you would apply these words to our hearts father we pray that your holy spirit would let us live this out in our lives in jesus name amen all right here we go luke chapter 17 beginning at verse 11. now it happened as he went to jerusalem that he passed through the midst of samaria and galilee then as he entered a certain village there met him ten men who were lepers who stood afar off and they lifted up their voices and said jesus master have mercy on us so when he saw them he said to them go show yourselves to the priests and so it was as they went they were cleansed and one of them when he saw that he was healed returned with a loud voice glorified god and fell on his face at his feet giving him things pardon me giving him things and he was a samaritan so jesus answered and said we're not ten cleansed but where are the nine were they not were there not any found who returned to give glory to god except this foreigner and he said to him arise go your way for your faith has made you well now when he was asked by the pharisees when the kingdom of god would come he answered and said to them the kingdom of god does not come with observation nor will they say see here or see there for indeed the kingdom of god is within you then he said to the disciples the day will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the sons of man and you will not see it and they will say to you look here and or look there do not go after them or follow them for as the lightning that flashes out of one part under heaven shines to the other part under heaven so the son of man will be in his day but after he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation and as it was in the days of noah so will it also be in the days of the son of man they ate they drank they married wise they were given in marriage until the day that noah entered the ark and the flood came and destroyed them all likewise as it was also in the days of lot they ain't they ate they drank they bought they sold they planted they built but on the day that lot went out of sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all even so it will be in that day in the day when the son of man is revealed in that day he who is on the housetop and his goods are in the house let him not come down to take them away and likewise the one who is in the field let him not turn back remember lot's wife whoever seeks to save his life will lose it and whoever loses his life will preserve it i tell you in that night there will be two men in one bed the one will be taken and the other will be left two women will be grinding together the one will be taken and the other left two men will be in the field the one will be taken and the other left and they answered and said to him where lord so he said to them wherever the body is there the eagles will be gathered together well we have a wonderful passage for us two verses or two parica piece two sections to look at the first one is verses 11 through 19. it's a story of the lepers we need to ask ourselves for these sections a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize these sections and c what are you called to do in response to this so a what is this about well jesus heals jesus heals but only one glorifies god jesus heals but only one is actually after god's kingdom that's what i would put in the margin of my bible how would you summarize this section i think what luke is doing here i think why the holy spirit gave us this passage is to show us that many people followed jesus for their own prophet many people followed jesus to get something from him many people were coming to god incarnate to get their bellies filled or to get their bodies made whole but not to bring glory to god and it's amazing what happens with the story right and and this this man comes after he was healed he returned with a loud voice glorified god and fell down at his feet fell down at jesus's feet on his face giving him thanks and then that little sentence and he was a samaritan right it's not it's not those people we would expect it's not those people who we would expect but it's those people who have an eye towards god's glory who can fall upon their faces and glorify god for his mercy and his grace the others were fine to go show themselves to the priests and go beyond their way but this one understood that someone had made him whole in my bible i'm going to underline two parts you can be mad at me that's okay but i'm going to underline those two parts 15 and 16 as well as 19. i think that gets at the heart of what this is getting at here his faith had made him well and his faith was toward a purpose to glorify god how are you glorifying god when he answers your prayers do you fall upon his upon your face and thank god for his mercy when he redeemed you did you cry out with praise to him or was it just okay i gotta get a hell free card how do you think of your salvation how do you think about your purpose in this life i love the westminster shorter catechism question one when it asks what is our chief end what right what's the purpose of my life man's chief end is to glorify god and to enjoy him forever that's my goal in life that's my purpose in life is to glorify god and to enjoy him forever well that next part is an interesting part isn't it christ teaches on the second coming there's a bunch here there's a whole lot here we could do a whole you know 10-week study just on these verses and there's a lot of opinions on these verses but it's clear let's let's just boil it down to its most simple one-sentence summary right and jesus is coming back jesus is there and jesus is coming back and it's not the way they expected it jesus is there and jesus is coming back and it's not the way they expected it or you might say the messiah has come the messiah is coming and it's not the way the world expects it or the kingdom of god is at hand the kingdom of god will come and it's not the way they expected it now there's a whole bunch there i i we're already we're already at like 11 minutes so i'm just gonna real quick run through a few things we notice that uh the disciples are asking the days will come when you as jesus is telling his disciples the days will come when you will desire to see one of the days of the son of man and you will not see it right don't don't believe people are going to say oh look here or look there the signs of the times you know yeah there are signs of the times but the signs are so general that it's not if somebody comes and tries to dupe you into saying oh jesus is coming next year the apocalypse is definitely happening and happening in 220 2020. look here look at this evidence look at that evidence oh hold on these things are happening all around the world in jerusalem this stuff is happening over here this stuff is happening jesus is going to come like a thief in the night it's going to be like lightning right jesus came like lightning with his little short ministry three years in gone it's not the way they expected it but the question is are you about preserving your life are you willing to lose your life for christ's sake right that's what that's what he warns us about with noah and with lot that's what he warns us about with lot's wife are you about the kingdom of god are you about seeking after jesus and bring glory to your father let me know i'm going to leave this one up to you let me know what would you underline in this second section as the best verse to summarize that section let's go ahead and pray lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the beauty of your word we thank you father that you are coming again we know that for sure because your kingdom of god has been inaugurated in jesus christ and we thank you for the confidence that we have in him father we pray that we would seek to glorify you we pray father that we would fall on our faces and thankfulness and in awe for all you have done please lord care for us this day please father bless us and let us love you with all of our hearts in jesus name amen well may god bless you today and may he give you peace if this is a helpful video to you and you'd like us to beat the facebook and youtube algorithm feel free to hit that like or
