Luke 17:1-10

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday morning october 5th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends before my kids wake up or i can grab a spare second from them you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow for a love for the lord together and this year in 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well normally on monday mornings these are pre-recorded but if you've been following along for a while i have not been having the best luck with my cameras and sure enough we ordered a new camera it was working great and then on uh saturday it died so i have to send it back and get a new camera again so uh this this i'm sorry it's a little bit late but it should have been pre-recorded didn't happen so uh we're a little bit late that's okay why don't we go ahead and pray and we'll jump into god's word lord we thank you so much for this day we thank you for your word father we pray that you would bless us as we read your word that you would care for our souls and that you would teach us how to love you with all of our hearts in jesus name amen all right we are at luke chapter 17 the first let's see the first 10 verses luke 17 the first 10 verses and then he said to the disciples it is impossible that no offenses should come but woe to him through whom they do come it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea that he should offend one of these little ones take heed to yourselves if your brother sins against you rebuke him and if he repents forgive him and if he sins against you seven times in a day and seven times in a day returns to you saying i repent you shall forgive him and the apostle said to the lord increase our faith so the lord said if you have faith as a mustard seed you can say to this mulberry tree be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea and it would obey you and which of you having a servant plowing or tending sheep will say to him who has come in the field come and at once sit down and eat but will he not rather say to him prepare something for my supper and gird yourself and serve me till i have eaten and drunk and afterwards you will and afterwards you will eat and drink does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him i think not so likewise you when you have done all these things which you are commanded say we are unprofitable servants we have done what is our duty to do well we have i'm going to move this over just a little bit here there we go uh we have a great passage for us today about forgiveness and faithfulness that's how i would summarize this in my bible a what is this about forgiveness and faithfulness right jesus is saying that in this first part verses 1 through 4 that it's impossible that no offenses should come right it's impossible for us to never sin there's this fake facade that many christians put on that like oh i got everything put together everything is okay i don't have any problems in my life but we all sin we all fall right we all fall short of the glory of god that is a present thing we're going to offend but we better be very careful right because what does jesus say that it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea then he should offend one of these little ones right one if if we are being an offense to our children if if we're not careful about our holiness and we hurt our children right this is this is why paul tells us in ephesians that that fathers specifically need to watch out how they care for their children but they shall not provoke them to anger so we we have this this obligation and how do we care and how do we how do we show that love even though we are we offend but what does jesus say right even if there is this offense even if there is a failing [Music] where to forgive right what does he say and if he sins against you seven times in a day seven times in one day and he comes to you and he repents and he asks for forgiveness what are we to do to forgive right what are we to do we are to be be those who can show the grace of god and forgive it's amazing that this is coming right off the table of when the pharisees and the sad and the scribes are like you know these receiving tax collectors and sinners jesus is saying they're repenting and i forgive them right are we like jesus in this way well the next part right this is hard right this is not easy stuff this is hard and so what does he say in verse 5 and the apostle said to the lord increase our faith oh boy how do i forgive someone who's sinned against me seven times in one day lord i need you to increase my faith and what does jesus say if you have faith as a mustard seed just a little tiny seed you'll say to this mulberry tree be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea and it would obey you all right you can do this if you just have a if god has given you just a mustard seed size of faith you can do impossible things you can tell someone who has offended you seven times in one day i forgive you and mean it from your heart you can do the impossible can grieve with hope you can rebuke someone in the truth you can have confidence in the face of fear and so even this last part right it says uh about how we are to respond to god this this last part is you know how are we faithful to god well we're faithful like his servants we're those who come to god and we do what he's commanded us to do we are those servants who are for just right we're just barely able to do what he commands us to do and even when we do it we don't do it great and so again this is in the in light of what the pharisees and the scribes are saying right they're they're like built up in themselves like he's receiving tax collectors and sinners right in their mind they're doing everything right they're doing everything perfect and jesus is saying no no even when you think you're doing everything right and every and when you think you're doing you know you're you're just you're just you know all for yourself and you you're just built up in yourself just remember you're just doing what god commands you're not going above and beyond you're just a c right i don't know about you but sometimes in my life i feel like i'm getting a d but we're just doing what god commands and so we we don't have the self-righteousness but we realize that god forgives us seven times a day more than that he forgives us 70 times seven times a day what's the best verse in this well i think i would underline verse verse three and maybe verse four verse three and four something like that i would underline in my bible is the best part for verse 17 or for the first part of chapter 17. and the second part i think i would uh underline verse 10. we've already had calling stuff in this so i'm going to wrap this up and let's just pray together father we thank you so much for this day we pray lord that we would have the faith of even like a mustard seed that we would follow after you with all of our hearts and that you would care for us lord we pray that you would bless us this day that we would be faithful laborers and your vineyard we pray lord that you would give us hearts to do the impossible to forgive and forgive and forgive and forgive and forgive and forgive and forgive and forgive for you have forgiven us a debt which we can never repay thank you for the grace we have in jesus christ it's in his name we pray amen i pray that you go forth today in the peace and in the grace of jesus christ bye
