John 7:45–8:11

[Music] so [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this saturday morning december 5th this where every weekday morning at 9 00 am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we were at john chapter seven we'll finish chapter seven we'll go into verse eight for a little bit why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the rich blessing it is to have faith in you we pray now lord that you would open our eyes that we might see and behold your glory that we would know who you are in to see this let's go ahead and get into god's word here we go so john chapter 7 verses 45 through chapter 8 verse 11. then the officers came to the chief priests and the pharisees who said to them why have you not brought him the officers answered no man ever spoke like this man then the pharisees answered them are you so deceived have you any of the rulers of the pharisees believed in him but this crowd that does not know the law is accursed nicodemus who came to jesus by night being one of them said to them does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing they answered and said to him are you also from galilee search and look for no prophet has ever arisen out of galilee and everyone went to his own house then chapter 8. when jesus went to the mount of olives now early in the morning he came again into the temple and all the people came to him and he sat down and taught them then the scribes and pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery and when they had set her in the midst they said to him teacher this woman was caught in adultery in the very act now moses and the law commanded us that such should be stoned but what do you say this they said testing him that they might have something of which to accuse him but jesus stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger as though he did not hear when they continued asking him he raised himself up and said to them who is he who is without sin among you let him throw a stone at her first and again he stooped down and wrote on the ground then those who heard it being convicted by their own conscience went out one by one beginning with the oldest even to the last and jesus was left alone and the woman standing there in the midst when jesus had raised himself up he saw no one but the woman he said to her woman where are those accusers of yours has no one condemned you she said no one lord jesus said to her neither do i condemn you go and sin no more we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this passage and c what are we called to do in response to these words a what is this about well we have two remarkable stories for us first of all we have people trying to put jesus on trial right the officers came to the chief priests and the pharisees who said to them have you not brought him like what's wrong with you guys we sent you to dispatch him to go get him you didn't bring him dude he doesn't talk like anyone else we've ever met this is this is this is someone we haven't known before and then they get upset with them and then nicodemus who's one of them goes and he had come to jesus by night before he comes and he talks to them we had come into nicodemus in chapter 3 if you remember that when jesus said that a man had to be born again and je and it seems like nicodemus is fighting for jesus here doesn't it he comes to him and and he says does our law judge a man before it hears him and knows what he is doing and they slander him right shut the book right away what are you talking about are you from galilee you know what the book says no good prophet comes from there right and and everyone went to his own house the case is over it's they can't get them and so what is this about this is about people trying to stop jesus ministry but nothing's going to stop the kingdom of heaven from coming the next portion 8 1-11 has is you might just say jesus pardoning an adulterous woman and this is one of those remarkable stories now if you have your bible in front of you maybe you're using something like the niv or something like that they would put this possibly in brackets and say this isn't found in some of the manuscripts it's found in the vast majority of manuscripts but some people question whether or not this should be in the bible it's this remarkable story of what jesus does for this woman isn't it there's so much wrong with this story right if you want to talk about misogyny we can talk about it's not in the christian faith but it's what's going on here they don't bring the man which was required by the law that both the man and the woman be charged with this adultery and stoned but they're trying to trap jesus it's it's possible that they even set this woman up they try to get her by herself and try to get jesus tripped up in his words it's like jesus doesn't even pay attention to him isn't isn't a remarkable part where jesus is just like he doesn't even hear them just writing with his finger on the ground gently and when they're done with all their accusations what does he say let he who has no sin cast the first stone and beginning with the oldest even unto the last they'll leave they're convicted in their conscience they know that they have sin they know that all the wages of sin is death that everyone deserves death and jesus looks up he raises himself up he looks at her and you can imagine the compassion in his eyes he says ma'am where are your accusers and how does she answer has no one condemned you no one lord go and sin no more jesus doesn't excuse her sin but in jesus christ there is therefore no condemnation because jesus is the one who takes away our sins jesus is the one who washes this woman clean jesus is the one who pardons her iniquity and like they wanted to destroy her jesus would be the one who would be destroyed like they wanted to put her up for execution you can imagine jesus as he's writing there in this in the ground i wonder what he wrote did he write i'll take your place now this is just speculation you know in my mind maybe he wrote some theological truth like substitutionary atonement that he would stand in her place as a lamb who would take away her sins but let's just jump straight to sea calling what are we called to do in response to this do we believe that jesus christ can pardon our sins and that in him and through him we can live unto godliness that in jesus christ there is therefore now no condemnation do we confess and believe that jesus christ is our lord and savior if we do we have remission for our sins through the blood of jesus christ there is no one who can bring an accusation against god's elect because jesus has taken all the accusations and stood in our place let's go ahead and pray father we thank you so much for jesus christ and we thank you for what a rich blessing it is to be your children we pray father that you would care for us now and you would bless us that we would believe these truths and the depths of our souls and cling to them with every fiber of our being in jesus
