Christ Witnesses to the Woman at the Well
4 Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples), 3 He left Judea and departed again to Galilee. 4 But He needed to go through Samaria.
5 So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”
Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”
19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”
21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this tuesday morning before every weekday morning at 9 00 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at one of my favorite stories john chapter 1 versus john chapter 4 verses 1 through 26 why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the rich blessing it is to get to be in your word we pray father you would bless us as we read that we would understand your word that your holy spirit would open our eyes that we might know who you are in jesus name amen why don't we go ahead and get into god's word this morning john chapter 4 beginning at verse 1. therefore when the lord knew that the pharisees had heard that jesus said jesus made and baptized more disciples than john though jesus himself did not baptize but his disciples he left judea and departed again to galilee but he needed to go through samaria hey terry so he came to a city of samaria which is called psychar near the plot of the ground that jacob gave to his son joseph now jacob's well was there jesus therefore being wearied from his journey sat thus by the well it was that you being a jew ask a drink from me a samaritan woman for jews had no dwell dealings with samaritans jesus answered and said to her if you knew the gift of god and who it is who says to you give me a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water the woman said to him sir you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep where then do you get that living water are spirit and truth for the father is seeking such to worship him god is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth the woman said to him i know that messiah is coming who is called christ when he comes he will tell us all things jesus said to her i who speak to you am he well what a beautiful story we have for us today we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize this section and see what are we called to do in response to these words so first a what is this about well jesus is interacting with the samaritan woman but that's the setting of the story but is that really the heart of what this is getting at right that's that's a difficult thing often when we come to the scriptures we have to ask ourselves not just what the the story is but what is the teaching in the story what what is jesus getting at in the story why did god inspire the apostle john to write down these words well i think that we can come to this and we can see jesus is the messiah he gives a wellspring of life and that in and through jesus we worship in spirit and in truth so i i think that that's what this that's about i know it's kind of a mouthful but this is a big section right 26 verses there's there's so much here right we can talk about why does jesus have to go to samaria that's not the way you would normally go you wouldn't normally take the ridge road you would take the king's highway all the normal jews who were pious would go around samaria they wouldn't they they thought of them as half breeds they thought of them as pagans and and people to be avoided why did he have to go through there well because he had a mind towards this woman he knew she would come to the well he sends his disciples away to go buy food and he's there alone by the well he interacts with this woman why is she there without anybody else there why does she not want to come in the morning when everybody else is there why does she come in the middle of the heat of the day why why does it seem like she's ostracized why does she have had five husbands and the one she has now is not her husband how does jesus know these things and yet jesus still talks with her we'll find out tomorrow what his disciples reaction to this is but jesus had to go there and he interacts with them he interacts with this woman this this woman that would be an outcast to everyone else jesus interacts with her jesus cares for her jesus shares the truth of eternal life with her jesus shows her that it is only through him the christ who is teaching her all things b what is the best verse to summarize this i think it's going to be verses 25 and 26 a woman said to him i know that messiah is coming who is called christ when he comes he will tell us all things jesus said to her i who speak to you am he jesus is the christ he is the ego of me he is the i am he is i i'm it i'm the christ see calling what are we called to believe again and again and again and again and again throughout the book of john it's going to be a question of do we believe that he is the christ do we come to him because we hunger and we thirst for righteousness and do we have that hunger and thirst for righteousness filled in jesus christ alone do we come to christ do we believe in christ do we worship in spirit and truth through christ let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for jesus christ we thank you that you saw out this woman this ostracized woman this woman who normally wouldn't have been looked for and yet lord we know that you also look for us those who are not jewish by faith by flesh but you have engrafted in to the family of faith lord we thank you for jesus christ we thank you for sending your son to show us who you are and for through him allowing us to worship you in spirit and in truth let us believe in him every day in jesus name amen well may god bless you today as you worship him in spirit and in truth bye
