John 3:22–36

hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this monday evening this we're every weekday morning at 9 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together well this morning we were planned or we had gone to the zoo and st louis our children had accomplished all their goals with their schoolwork and so we headed down there i was planning on doing this early in the morning but a little bit of hiccup with that my wife actually helps me with keeping my screen time down and so she has the passcode on my phone for blocking me from certain apps first thing in the morning one of those being facebook so that way i don't wake up and get right on here so i couldn't get on to do coffee and devotions this morning so i thought i would jump on with you tonight so we just got to the hotel halfway home from st louis so why don't we go ahead before we go to bed why don't we get into god's word so john chapter 3 we'll read verses 21 through the end of the chapter here we go after these things jesus and his disciples came into the land of judea and there he remained with them and baptized now john was also baptizing anion near salim because there was much water there and they came and were baptized for john had not yet been thrown into prison then there arose a dispute between some of john's disciples and the jews about purification and they came to john and said to him rabbi he who was with you beyond the jordan to whom you have testified behold he is baptizing and all are coming to him john answered and said a man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven you yourselves bear me witness that i said i am not the christ but i have been sent before him he who has the bride is the bridegroom but the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly because the bridegroom's voice therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled he must increase but i must decrease he who comes from above is above all he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth he who comes from heaven is above all and what he has seen and heard that he testifies and no one receives his testimony he who has received his testimony has certified that god is true for he whom god has sent speaks the words of god and god does not give the spirit by measure the father loves the son and has given all things into his hand he who believes in the son has everlasting life and he who does not believe the son shall not see life but the wrath of god abides on him we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what's the best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to this so first a what is this about well jesus is baptizing people his disciples are baptizing people and the disciples of john come to him and they're like whoa hold on they're baptizing people what's going on here and john says hmm i told you i'm not the christ he's greater than me i must become less and he must become great he is the one who has come down from heaven and is speeching speaking spiritual truths i come to you and i speak earthly truths jonas is trying to show them that that they need to go to christ they need to they need to embrace him he's the one who was sent from the father he is the messiah he is the anointed one of god so a what is this about john testifying about christ what's the best verse to to summarize this section well i think it is when he says you yourselves bear me witness that i said i am not the christ but i have been sent before him and isn't it interesting when he talks about the bride and the bridegroom he doesn't have the bride the church is jesus it's not john the baptist it's jesus church john rejoices that jesus has come john rejoices that the bridegroom has come i think that's the best verse i would underline in my bible see calling what are we called to do in response to this passage do we believe jesus christ do we cling to jesus christ do we hope in jesus christ do we see that he is the highly exalted one that god has raised him up into heaven and has seated him at the at his own right hand and that all the nations have been given to jesus christ he is the messiah he is the anointed one do we believe in him that's why john writes this letter that we might believe in the name of the son of god let's pray tonight lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray that you would open our eyes to see that we would know that jesus is the christ the messiah the anointed one our king lord we pray that we would believe in his name and have life everlasting in jesus name amen well may god bless you tonight and may he give you peace i'll see you tomorrow early in the morning bye see you later ed see you later terry
