John 18:12–27

[Music] [Music] [Music] hey welcome to coffee and devotions this thursday morning december 24th happy christmas eve to you this we're every weekday morning supposed to be at 9am and on the weekends when i get a spare moment for my kids you and i we get together we have some coffee we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels and indeed we are at the end of the book of john only a few more days and we'll be done with all four gospels i'm really looking forward to 2021 with you if you haven't already let me know what you might want to read next year 2021. a bunch of you have given me great recommendations i'm trying to figure out how to make some of them work but go ahead and let me know but for now why don't we go ahead and have some coffee pray and get into god's word let's pray father we thank you so much for this day we thank you for the rich blessing it is to be your children to read your word we pray now that you would bless us as we read it that you might work these words into the depths of our souls that they would not just be in our minds but that they would be in our hearts and transform everything we think and do in jesus name amen well why don't we go ahead and look into god's word today so let's go ahead and pull up the screen here oh that's a little bit small for you guys let me here we go john chapter 18 verses 12-27 then the detachment of troops and the captain of the officers of the jews arrested jesus and bound him and they led him away to annas first for he was the father-in-law of caiaphas who was the high priest that year now it was caiaphas who advised the jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people and simon peter followed jesus and so did another disciple now the disciple was known to the high priest and went with jesus into the courtyard of the high priest but peter stood at the door outside then the other disciple who was known to the high priest went out and spoke to her who kept the door and brought peter in then the servant girl who kept the door said to peter are you are not also one of this man's disciples are you he said i am not now the servant and officers who had made a fire of coal stood there for it was cold and they warmed themselves and peter stood with them and he warmed himself the high priest then asked jesus about his disciples and his doctrine jesus answered him i spoke openly to the world i always taught in synagogues and in the temple where the jews always met and in secret i have said nothing why do you ask me ask those who have heard me what i said to them indeed they know what i said and when he had said these things one of the officers stood by who stood by struck jesus with the palm of his hand sorry it was more like smacked him in the face right saying do you do you answer the high priest like that jesus answered him if i have spoken evil bear witness of the evil but if well why do you strike me then anna sent him bound to caiaphas the high priest now simon peter stood and warmed himself therefore they said to him are you are not also one of his disciples are you he denied it and said i am not one of the servants of the high priest a relative of him whose ear peter cut off said did i not see you in the garden with him peter then denied him again and immediately the rooster crowed well we have an amazing story to look at this morning we need to ask ourselves a what is this about b what is the best verse to summarize the story and see what are we called to do in response to these words so a what is this about well this is jesus on trial before the high priest right you have anus and you have caiaphas you have the father-in-law of the high priest and you have the active high priest things are a little bit different than they were during you know the time of aaron when it was just one high priest but even with aaron after he was done his two sons became the high priests right and by the time we get to the roman era when jesus is alive there's a whole bunch of succession of high priests and so here there's the active high priest and his father-in-law and he goes on trial before both of them and it's interesting what happens isn't it as he's on trial right there they're wanting to ask him about who he is and his teaching and jesus is like whoa dudes i've been i've been teaching in the synagogues i've been teaching in the temple are you kidding me you know what i've been teaching go ask people who have heard what i've been teaching it's almost like jesus is one defending his honor but two also pleading the fifth you know not the fifth commandment but the fifth amendment of our constitution in america you know that he doesn't need to self-incriminate himself his testimony has been known throughout the entire world and how do they respond to this how do they respond to jesus's integrity that he didn't say anything in secret but they smack him right they smack him across the face well is this how you talk to the high priest think about this this is the king of the universe this is the one to whom all the sacrifices and all the temple worship pointed towards and they just smacked him in the face the priests who offered those sacrifices put their heads upon the the the goat that would take away the sin they're the ones condemning the one who would take away the sins of the world what is this about one one sense this is jesus on trial this is what peter says that the just was punished for the unjust right that jesus was on trial instead of us but what is this also about speaking of peter this is about peter denying jesus he does it multiple times here now it's interesting just a little bit of side note is that john is speaking of himself you know he's known to the high priest and and so he often speaks with himself in the third person and john is the one who even gets peter in the courtyard right he's standing outside the gate and john goes and talks to the person who's in charge of the gate and he's kind of like the the guy who's helping his friend get into the club and he's getting him in into into the party right or into the trials not a party it shouldn't be so jovial here but the point is is that john gets him in he's there and he has opportunities time and time and time again to to confess again that jesus is the christ the son of the living god he said he would go to he would die for jesus and here he's just asked simple questions and he denies him a what is this about jesus on trial and being abandoned by his closest friends what's the best verse to summarize this well um i'm going to let you answer that one go go ahead and instead of highlighting something here in my bible you let me know down in the comments what would you highlight or underline in your bible as the best verse to summarize this section well last we need to ask ourselves see calling what are we called to do in response to these words how does this change our lives how do we get it from our heads to our hearts to move our feet well do you confess jesus christ jesus himself is the one who said that if you deny me before men i will deny you before my father who who's in heaven some of you are in places where it's dangerous to confess jesus christ openly will you confess him for some of you it's just awkward and difficult to confess jesus christ because you know that it might ruin friendships or relationships or put tension at the christmas table tomorrow well you confess jesus christ but instead of just looking at us and what we're to do i think this passage is mainly meant to show us about jesus that we might believe in him that our hearts might overflow with thankfulness that when jesus was on that mountain and he was praying he knew that his disciples were going to be scattered he knew that peter was going to deny him he knew that the high priests were going to reject him jesus knew these things were about to happen the righteous suffering for the unrighteous do you believe it in your heart do you confess it with your mouth is your heart overwhelmed with thankfulness for what jesus christ has done let's go ahead and pray this morning father i thank you so much for bringing my friends here this morning to look at your word lord we pray that you would work in our hearts that we might be overwhelmed that you would not just come into this world but would would live a perfect life for us and would even be rejected despised of men that we might be saved we pray these things in jesus name amen i pray that lord blesses you today and that he fills your heart with joy and with peace until tomorrow bye [Music] you
