John 16:16–17:5

[Music] [Music] hey hey welcome to coffee and devotions this sunday evening this is december what's the date december 20th december 20th that's where every weekday morning at 9 a.m and on the weekends when i get a spare moment from these guys you and i we get together we get into god's word and we grow in our love for the lord together and this year 2020 we'll make it through all the gospels well this morning we are at john chapter 16 verse 16 through chapter 17 verse 5. why don't we go ahead and have some coffee well it's late so i have tea why don't we go ahead and have some tea pray and get into god's word let's pray do you want to pray or do you want me to pray you want me to pray okay lord we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for your word we pray now that as we read your word that you would bless us that you would teach us that we might know who you are and that we might love you with all of our hearts in jesus name amen okay you want to help me out today okay here we chapter 16 verse 16. can you read 16 down to here a little while and you will not see me and again a little while you will see me because i go to the father then some of the his eyeballs said among themselves what is this this that he says to us a little while and you will not see me and again a little while you will see me because i go to the father they said therefore what is this he says a little while we do not know what he's saying now jesus knew that they desired to ask him and he said to them are you inquiring among yourselves about what i said a little while and you will not see me and again a little while and you will see me most assuredly i say to you that you will weep and lament but the world will rejoice and you will be sorrowful but your sorrow will be turned to joy that's right a woman when she is in labor has sorrow because her hour has come but as soon as she has given birth to the child she no longer remembers the anguish for joy that the human being has been born into the world therefore you now have sorrow but i will see you again and your heart will rejoice and your joy no one will take from you you want to read 24-24 23-24 and that and in that day you will ask me nothing most assuredly i say to you whatever you ask the father in my name he will give you until now you ask nothing in my name ask and you will receive that your joy will be if will be full these things i have spoken to you in figurative language but in the time but the time is coming when i will no longer speak to you in figurative language but i will tell you plainly about the father in that day you will ask in my name and i do not say to you that i shall pray the father for you for the father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that i came forth from god i came forth from the father and have come into the world again i leave the world and go to the father can you read this part 29 30. his disciples the disciples said to him see now that you are speaking plainly using no figure of speech now that we are now we are sure now we are sure that you know all things and and no need that anyone should question you but this we believe that you came forth from god jesus answered them do you now believe indeed the hour is coming yes has now come that you will be scattered each to his own and will leave me alone and yet i am not alone because my father because the father is with me these things i have spoken to you that in me you may have peace in the world you will have tribulation but be of good cheer i have overcome the world jesus spoke these words lifted up his eyes to heaven and said father the hour has come glorify this your son that your son also may glorify you as you have given him authority over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as you have given him and this is eternal life that they may know you the only true god in jesus christ whom you have sent i have glorified you on earth i have finished the work which you have given me to do and now oh father glorify me together with yourself with the glory which i had with you before the world was whoa that was a big portion huh what do you think that first part was about a little while and you won't see me in a little while and you'll see me what's what do you think jesus is talking about there you'll just see him for a little while and then you won't see him well where's he gonna go where they can't see him anymore to the father well first he's gonna go to the dead yeah he's gonna go to the grave right he's gonna he's gonna go to the to the place of death and can they see him there no but will they see him again how are they gonna see him again he's gonna arise he's gonna rise from the dead and they'll see him again that's right that's right jesus is predicting his own death that that not just predicting he's prophesying his own death he knows what's going to happen right and this is this is the point that i'm going to underline in my bible verse 22 therefore you have now you have sorrow but i will see you again and your heart will rejoice and your joy no one will take from you did you hear the part where it was talking about uh mommies having babies yeah and uh he was do you think jesus was saying it was going to be hard for him to die was there going to be pain when he died yeah yeah right but but would there be joy afterwards do you think mommy was happy when you were born oh yeah she was you know i still remember mommy's face when you were born she was so happy to see you that's like she totally forgot all that just happened yeah that's what jesus compares his death and resurrection with and then this last part here is so interesting as well all right uh i'm going to underline verse 5 or 4 and 5. i have glorified you on the earth i have finished the work which you have given me to do and now oh father glorify me together with yourself with the glory which i had with you before the world was what do you think that's teaching us about jesus he is glorified on the earth and now we'll finish the work but but it says but it says with the glory which i had with you before the world was what does that mean was jesus around before the world what how because jesus is god jesus is god and he had glory before the world you sure is that what this says rock on that's right that's right that's what this is about and those are the best verses why don't we go ahead and ask what does this do in our lives right what how do you how do you think we're called to respond to this what do you think there's a hard one huh do you think we can have joy in jesus's resurrection yeah do you believe in your heart that god raised jesus up from the dead if so there is a there is a joy that's unshakable right if you have faith in jesus christ if you believe in jesus christ confess with him or confess jesus christ with your mouth and believe in your heart that god raised him from the dead you will be saved do you believe it isn't isn't this amazing yeah do you think jesus is glorified in heaven now do you think he should be glorified on earth now do you think we can tell other people about jesus rock on you ready to pray all right let's pray father we thank you so much for this day and we thank you for the blessing it is to be in your word we pray now that you would let us enjoy this night that we might remember the glory of jesus christ we thank you for your grace and the joy that you give us that no one can take away in jesus name we pray amen you want to say goodbye bye oh you're looking at
