Scripture Passage
The Relationship of Believers to the World
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
16 “These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.
The New King James Version (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1982), Jn 15:18–16:15.

go ahead and jump into god's word if the world hates you that's really weird i'm so sorry i don't know what's going on there let's go ahead and jump into the word if the world hates you you know that it hated me before it hated you if you were of the world the world would love its own yet because you are not of the world but i chose you out of the world therefore the world hates you remember that the world that said i said remember the word that i said to you a servant is not greater than his master if they persecuted me they will persecute you also if they if they kept my word they would keep yours also but all these things they will do to you for my name's sake because they do not know him who sent me if i had not come and spoken to them they would have no sin but now they have no excuse for their sin he who hates me hates my father also if i had not done among them the works which no one else did they would have no sin but now they have seen and also hated both me and my father but this happened that the word might be fulfilled which was written in their law they hated me without cause but when the helper comes whom i shall send to you from the father the spirit of truth who proceeds from the father he will testify of me and you also will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning these things i have spoken to you that you should not be made to stumble they will put you out of the synagogues yes the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers service to god and these things they will do to you because they have not known the father nor me but these things i have told you that when the time comes you may remember that i told you of them and these things i did not say to you at the beginning because i was with you but now i go away to him who sent me and none of you asks me where are you going but because i have said these things to you sorrow has filled your heart nevertheless i tell you the truth it is to your advantage that i go away for if i did not go away the helper would not come to you but if i depart i will send him to you and when he has come he will convict the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment of sin because they do not believe in me of righteousness because i go to my father and you see me no more of judgment because the ruler of this world is judged i still have many things to say to you but cannot bear them now however when the spirit of truth has come he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak on his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak and he will tell you things to come he will glorify me for he will take of what is mine and declare it to you for all all things that the father has are mine therefore i said that he will take of mine and declare it to you well what is this passage a talking about what is the b best verse to summarize this and see what are we called to do in response to these words a what is this about a servant is not greater than his master right jesus is telling us that he's going away and when he goes away they're going to persecute us because they hated him and if they hated him they hated the father but it was good that jesus would go because he would send us the holy spirit and the spirit would remind us of these things would would inspire the impossibles to remember all of his teachings and would tell them of things to come like he did with john in the book of revelation what is this about jesus is preparing his disciples for what's going to happen after his resurrection that's how i would summarize this section what would you write in the margin of your bible would how would you say in maybe one or two sentences what is this about well the best verse i'm going to have to choose a couple verses for this but i think the a few of the verses that really stick out to me that helps summarize this section is what jesus says over here in verse 20 remember that the word that i said to you a servant is not greater than his master if they persecuted me they will also persecute you if they kept my words they would keep yours also i think that's a key thing that jesus is saying there but i think also here when he says in verse 26 26 and 27 is about the helper who's going to come and who's going to show them and teach them things and lastly i think i i know i'm breaking my own rule because i'm saying you know you should only highlight maybe one or two verses but this is a big chunk and it's a very important chunk and i think that lastly i would underline in my bible however when the spirit of truth has come he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak of his own authority but whatever he hears he will speak and he will tell you things to come well we need to last ask ourselves what are we called to do in response to this okay so we've worked through it we've we've kind of understood the gist of what's going on here but what are we supposed to do in response of these words see calling what are we called to do are you ready for persecution you know that jesus actually talked about this when he gave the parable of the different types of soil do you remember that when he said that there was some seed that would be thrown and it would be sown upon rocky ground and satan would just come and take that up other seed would grow on on soil that had a bunch of weeds in it and the cares of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth would choke out that seed but there was another seed also a seed that was sown on rocky soil and sprouted up very quickly but when the sun came and persecution came upon that that seed withered away and died are you ready do you count the cost of discipleship that you must take up your cross daily and follow jesus christ dietrich bonhoeffer once said a call to follow christ as a call to die are we ready to know that we count jesus christ better than father or mother brother or sister children and grandchildren do we set our eyes upon god himself and go and serve him alone are you ready for persecution and are you soaking up the words that the spirit has given us in his word that you might be ready upon that day you know we have brothers and sisters who are throughout the world who are suffering right now under the hand of persecution i live here in iowa where there's not much christian persecution but yet in other parts of the country they'll tell us that what's most important for them when they go into jail is that the holy spirit and his word has been buried in their hearts because it's what's in their hearts already that gets them through the torture and the persecution are you ready are you listening to the spirit let's pray father we thank you so much that you do not hide the hard truth from us but that you love us and that you care for us we pray now that as we as we go about this day that you would fix our eyes upon jesus christ that we might soak in deeply the spirit and that you would teach us and love us in jesus name we pray amen well i pray that the lord blesses you today and he lets you walk in the confidence and peace of jesus christ [Music] bye [Music] you
